There were two amazing sand sculptures direclty across from Meiea Pataca on Atlantic Ave as of last week. One was of six garotas on their stomachs with finely sculptured bundas sticking high in the air. The other sculpture was of of ten emaculate Thai-like temples.

Can you advise if these wonderful sculptures survived the tide? A hell of a lot of work went into these pieces d'art and what a shame if they were destroyed by the high tide.

that is interesting. apparently, not sure of the exact date, but say before 1950's, avinida atlantica did not exist. the beach went all the way to the first row of buildings. hence i guess this is just another case of man building in the wrong place and nature continuing along its original path.

Can anyone shed some light on varig, Is it going to stop flying soon? I know that they have been cancelling flights recently both internally and internationally. What the word in the press in Brasil.

I was told by my travel agent (BACC in NY) that they are on the verge of bankruptcy. They are trying to stave it off. I was told that they are either a subsidiary of American Airlines or have an arrangement with AA.

I can vouch for the latter statement personally. In Impanema, we met two US tourists (non-mongerers) that had originally booked a flight on Varig. Their flight was cancelled and they subsequently were bumped to an AA flight later in the day.

I was advised by both to avoid Varig completely.

"Varig auction in Brazil postponed until June 8.

SAO PAULO, Brazil, June 2 (Reuters) - An auction to try to sell Brazilian airline Varig (VAGV4.SA: Quote, Profile, Research) has been postponed until June 8 at the request of potential bidders, the carrier said on Friday.

The delay marks the third time the auction has been rescheduled. Varig, which is operating under bankruptcy protection, was first set to go on the auction block in July.

Last week a bankruptcy court in Rio de Janeiro moved the auction up until June 5, in part to thwart attempts by the airline's creditors to seize some of its planes for failing to make lease payments.

That left potential bidders with little time to study Varig's finances and to prepare offers, prompting them to request an extension, Varig said.

So far, at least five companies have paid fees to have access to a data room that Varig has set up for potential bidders to evaluate the airline's books.

They include TAM Linhas Aereas (TAM.N: Quote, Profile, Research)(TAMM4.SA: Quote, Profile, Research), Gol Linhas Aereas Inteligentes (GOL.N: Quote, Profile, Research) (GOLL4.SA: Quote, Profile, Research), a small Brazilian carrier called OceanAir, the Portuguese airline TAP, and the U.S. investment fund Brookefield.

Varig's routes and fleet will be auctioned for a minimum price of $860 million under a plan approved by creditors, the bankruptcy court and the government.

Domestic and international routes will be offered together. But if the minimum price is not met, the foreign and domestic routes will be sold separately. The minimum price for the domestic operation has been set at $700 million.

The winning bidder will be required to inject $75 million into the airline within three days of the auction.

As Brazil's former flagship carrier, Varig is one of the country's best-known companies globally. But it struggled for years, racking up debt and losing market share to more cost-efficient rivals like TAM and Gol.

A year ago, Varig, short for Viacao Aerea Rio-Grandense, became the first major company to seek protection from creditors under Brazil's new bankruptcy law, which allows companies to work out reorganization plans.

Varig, with some 10,000 employees, has more than 7 billion reais ($3.1 billion) in debt. Its creditors include General Electric Co. (GE.N: Quote, Profile, Research), Boeing Co. (BA.N: Quote, Profile, Research) and several state-owned entities, such as oil giant Petrobras (PBR.N: Quote, Profile, Research)(PETR4.SA: Quote, Profile, Research) and the government's airport authority Infraero."

"Eleven bidders show interest

Eleven companies have shown interest in acquiring the routes, planes and offices of Brazil’s embattled Varig airline, the carrier said yesterday.

Potential bidders include local companies TAM SA, Gol Linhas Aereas Inteligentes, OceanAir and WebJet, as well as Aero-Lb, a consortium including Portuguese airline TAP.

Varig on yesterday opened a data room, where interested parties can review the company’s business records ahead of Tuesday’s auction.

Varig — Viacao Aerea Rio-Grandense — has been struggling for years, with debts of about eight billion Brazilian reals (USUS$3.5 billion).

The proceeds of the auction will be used to pay debts on operating expenses to allow the airline to continue flying. The auction, originally scheduled for July, was moved ahead because the airline was in danger of shutting down.

Varig’s domestic and international operating assets — which include a fleet of 72 jets, of which only 47 are in operation — will be put up for sale for a minimum price of US$860 million.

The buyer would form a new company, leaving most of the company’s debts with the old company.

As a second option, Varig could auction off domestic routes for a minimum price of US$700 million, again leaving the debt with the old company, which would also remain responsible for international operations.

However, if no bid comes within 10 percent of either minimum price, a second round of bidding will be held with a reduced minimum price of USD $125 million.

But creditors are considering legal action to block the sale, which could scare off potential investors, analysts said.

The National Airports Authority Infraero, federally owned bank Banco do Brasil and BR Distribuidora, the distribution wing of state-controlled oil giant Petroleo Brasileiro, or Petrobras, contend that the second-round minimum price is insufficient to pay off Varig’s operating debts.

Meanwhile, foreign-based leasing companies are pressuring a New York court to allow them to repossess their planes currently in Varig’s service. Judge Robert Drain of a U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan was to rule yesterday whether leasing companies can seize their planes from Varig.

And federal prosecutors have appealed a court decision that the government must pay Varig 4.5 billion reals (USUS$1.96 billion) in compensation for losses arising from airfare price controls between 1986 and 1991.

Varig remains Brazil’s leading airline on international routes, but has fallen behind TAM and Gol domestically as cash-flow problems have forced it to reduce operations."

Ibiza is correct. I opened a Citibank checking account in Chicago and used it to withdraw money while in Rio. If you use the Citibank ATM's, there are no service charges or ATM fees.

If you ever look at destack.com or destack.com.br you will see a massage section. There are about 50 massage paurlors listed, all over Rio, some in Copa. I will work the Copa ones, but I need help to investigate all these places. It would take me 6 months and a lot of cash to check them all out.

There are some real gems listed as Massage casas, as these are all incall, they are a good value.


Citibank - i talked to the people at Citibank and they told me that Citi USA and Citi brasil are totally connected, unlike HSBC, which is totally unconnected.

You can deposit money here in your USA account, and deposit money in the USA in your brasil account, they are the same number and really just one account. Your ATM card and online bank are one, So you do not need a Brasil account with Citi. This is a good option for short term travelers.

In the name of science, I thought I would get to the bottom of the OGLOBO classified section for GDP, with an emphasis on Copa.

I started calling #'s Wednesday, today is Friday.

Exchange Rates: Per USD, GIG airport cambio/exchange gave 2.19, Help gave 2.20 at the door, exchange in Impanema 2.25, HSBC and Citibank 2.25, and on Friday (5/26) 2.35 at Ely’s Tour located at Av. N. S. de Copacabana, 259 (around the corner from the Copacabana Palace). Later in the day they lowered it to 2.19, go figure. I think they did so to keep the rate lower over the weekend. A carioca advised me that all exchanges lower their rates after 3p or so. I learned my lesson on exchange rates. It is best to shop around!

Best Cheap Buffet: Churrascaria de Kilo, Av. N. S. de Copacabana - 15 Reais for ALL you can eat. This place was always packed as the food was excellent and the selection good.

Best Cheap & Dirty quicky: Small private place in an office building at Av. N. S. de Copacabana, 583 sala 204 - The door was reminiscent of a safe house in some drug dealing movie, but what opened the door immediately alerted my friends and I of the secret treasure that we had stumbled upon. 8 sex crazed GDP's of various sizes, shapes and complexions. One definite 10.0, one definite 9.0 and the rest were between 7 and 8 depending upon your taste. I immediately grabbed the 10... a 5'10 Brazilian goddess with a somewhat Asian face but a bunda and breasts that defy traditional Asian stock. I saved LOADS. Furthermore, she stated that it is best if you have a Brazilian wrapped around your arm. It keeps everyone more honest with you.
