Considering it's high-40's (over 100 F) and sauna-humid here in the Gulf, I'm looking forward to the cool change. I've already been warned via PM that many of the better-looking girls leave town in winter and things will be quiet, but I'm sure there will still be a few hotties around. I guess this upscale VM-casa will not attract brazilian clients but maybe gringo clients who doesn't feel comfortable to mix with the locals in the alleys of VM.

I can't imagine they will do any good business. The girls who used to work in the gringo casa were just ordinary VM-girls. Why spend R$ 100 in this casa when you can walk one minute away to Hotel Canário and rent a room for R$ 25/3 hours and pay the girl R$ 50/1-2 hours. In Canário you'll get a nice room with a big soft clean bed, mirrors, AC, porno-channel, shower, roomservice and free candy at the reception...

Help seems quite dead these days, talked to some of the gals. They do not like not being able to smoke inside, so fewer are going there now, acording to the regulars. Mabs has been quite dead during the day, Balcony has a lot of girls, peaks about 11PM. But this is winter, and low season. Everyone is hoping it will pick up in July when vacation time hits the north.

For those of you coming down, it might be dead, but still it is Rio, you just have to look a bit harder. Today it is 27 outside (80) and sun. Yesterday was wamer.

It will be dead til August when the italian holiday takes hold and the place will be packed with italians. Til then the weather is only going to get worse. Help is so empty that you could throw a rock in there and not hit anybody. This is good because it brings the girls back to reality and makes them lower their prices. Girls in Help are going for 100-150 all night.

Is VM becoming a stage for conflict when it's visited also by gringo-mongers and when gringos open casas in VM?

In the article it's mentioned that a sophisticated "up-scale" casa opened in VM, by a German guy. It was located in the crossroad (between the fridge-trucks and the Goth-bar). I never entered there as the prices were higher and they even wanted to charge an entrance fee. Come on, charging an entrance fee in a VM casa... that's just outrageous!

Anyway, his casa is closed since at least one year back. The article is from 2005.

It sounds like a very stupid and unhealthy idea for a gringo to open a casa in VM that's supposed to be better than the rest of the casas.

BTW, it says that gringo clients in VM are good for the business as the girls can raise their prices or tell the gringos a touching story of how they suffers in their work in the intention of gaining more money. I've never experienced that.

I'm a long time Latin America mongerer--DR, Bogota, Medellin, Panama who lives in S. Florida. I'm looking to take the pilgrimage to mecca (Rio) in 2009. I think I am going to avoid Carnival this first go-round due to advice from numerous mongerers.

Can anyone tell me the best time of year to go? I'd like to go at a time when the prices aren't ridiculously jacked up for tourists (like Carnival) and when the highest number of hotties are in town. Also, looking for an ideal amount of time to spend there--I'm thinking one week in an apartment. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Carnaval weekend for 2009 starts on Friday February 20. So IMHO the optimum time to go to Rio is from right after New Years until February 20 2009.

This is high season but not as high as the New Years holiday and definately not as high as Carnaval. You will get a good group of girls coming to Rio from all over Brasil and all the girls coming in to town from working abroad in Europe who are coming back to experience their Carnaval and to take advantage of the onslaught of tourists arriving for Carnaval. They should all be there waiting several weeks before Carnaval and they start to leave right after Carnaval ends.

If the dollar is still weak then there will not be too many tourists there so prices should be moderate as they were this past year during this timeframe. Also you will notice that this is break time for the Universities so many students will be there looking to party and pick up a few bucks at the same time to pay for their holiday.

This is the time when all the girls are arriving for Carnaval but the tourists havn't arrived yet, no other time is like this.

I have to agree with you. Hell, if I was looking to pay a cover, that's the last place I'd go. I love VM for the simpleness of it all. When I go there, all I want is to blend in. Fortunately I have always traveled solo to these venues. I've fallen in live each of my trips there, but once I cross that invisible border, I'm single, and lovin' it.

I was contemplating taking my brasilera to a good quality club where they play hip hop and/dance(rave or techno) music. Thats what she likes, so I don't mind. A couple of brasilian friends have mentioned Club Nuth and 021 which are located right next to each other in Barra da Tijuca. Will probably go during the week. I have already done the Lapa scene, so she and I wanted to go somewhere different. Anyone have an opinion based on a visit to either one? Or any other suggestions? Thanks!

Check out Cristal in Ipanema. Went there back in January after New Year's We had a blast. There were no GDP's in our group. All students from USA/Europe. This place is next to Nuth. The prices weren't too bad from what I remember. It's worth a visit.

As long as she is a regular girl, you should be just fine at Nuth.


About 3 years ago, some of my friends treid to go into Nuth and the bouncers stopped them at the door. He said "You guys are welcome, but the prostitue cant com in". I dont know how she knew she was a GDP (She was dressed just like all the other girls, no extreme makeup, nothing) He refused to let her in, so the whole group went somewhere else.
