Prace da Republica is where you get off the metro for two of Sao Paolo's budget, 8/9 story buildings of fun: Barao de Limeira 134 and Rua dos Andradas 69. In addition, nearby are Teatro O'Globo and other low budget alternative spots. Not for the faint of heart, but there are definitely some jewels to be found in this area. The park is going through renovations, I guess the building has historical significance and from time to time there is a nice flea market at the square. I like the place myself, just during the day. I wouldn't try it at night.

I always feel safe around the Nestor Pestana strip club area, been there many times and always walk from my hotel the mercure/comfort inn. However I made the mistake of going for a late night walk once on the other side of Repúlica, gets very sketchy very quickly. Real nasty homeless people, not the docile drunk type, but the real edgy drugged out type looking to mug people type.

Tell ya what amigo, take a walk on a side street near Rua Rio Bronco and Aurora at about midnight or so, you may feel just a bit differently about your safety.
I foolishly walked thru that area the other evening and felt and saw danger and I'm no newbie to S.America.

Never claimed it was the most dangerous part of Sao Paulo, but I guarantee you could get yourself in some trouble there.

Contrarily I wouldn't want to be caught dead, even daytime, in neighborhoods like Jardim Angela (once considered by UN as one of most violent urban area in the world) or Capao Redondo, or worst in a place like Grajau, which is the worst periferia of Sao Paulo and probably the worst urban sector in Brasil when it comes to crime.

The taxi driver said most of the clubs have been shut down. Cafe Foto, Bahama's, . Apparently the mayor is cleaning up. Luckily The Garden Club is still open and I had the oppuotunity to sample the goods last night. Not bad, but not as good as Cafe Foto. Heading back tonight before it gets closed too. Can anybody confirm these closings and is this temporary or a permanent thing?

It has been in the cards for a long time that Cafe Photo will have to relocate. The owner of the current location gave notice for end of rental a long time ago. That is why it closed. They are trying to get a lisence for its new location but has so far been unsuccessful. They have now temporarily reopened at its familiar location until the lisence is given for the new location.

Bahamas has been closed for several years but the owner has opened a new club called Touch Cafe in the suburb Sao Jose dos Campos.

Have just returned from a five day business trip to SP.

I had not checked this local site recently and it is indeed not accessible from her e in New York. If anyone know of a reliable way to access it somehow (I tried some publically listed Proxy servers but they did not work) please share it with your fellow ISGrs.
