this hotel includes what i imagine is a ktv establishment. so we check in and on our way out to dinner at about 8pm i am looking for the bar to get a beer and go to the third floor which is where the front desk directed me. this looks dull so i take the escalators downward and see a pretty girl who beckons me on and down. this entrance as i subsequently discover is in the main hotel foyer to the left of the check in/concierge desk. anyway the mamasan has just had a team meeting and the entrance vestibul is lined on either side with about 20 beauties in long dresses. as i walk down this gauntlet of dames i now have a stunned and broad grin but as i later discover these girls are the lures not the players. this then is the piano bar and jessica the english manager welcomes me and tells me what’s what. rmb 400 for a girl to join you and you can sit at the bar or take one of the half dozen sofa areas rep001tered around the bar area. there are also about 4 karioke rooms ranging from rmb 1500 to 2500 depending on size and this i think includes a bottle of whiskey. you are also expected to spend about rmb 500 on drinks and tip jessica about 200 or 300. girls drinks are 100 and a beer about 50. if you take the girl to your room this is rmb2100 (girl gets 1500) and you don’t pay the rmb400. you can however skip the drinks thing altogether and take a girl straight out for 2100 and i guess a tip for jessica. the whole set up is pretty classy. opens at 7pm closes around 2am.
anyway we go out to dinner and back at around midnight and many of the girls have gone home so we have about 8 to choose from.

here are some lessons that readers of this forum will have learned by reading the posts:

1) western hotel takeout will always be too expensive. might as well stay home hire an escort, and save your plane fare.

2) you should be able to get an overnight guest who is cute, and loves to fuck, for 800rmb or less. or if you have any skill at picking up girls at all, for free. chinese girls are easy to catch.

3) there are a thousand sob stories. keep your heart out of your wallet. that girl was raising major cash from you. even if you gave her an extra 600, not clear where that money will go. besides, as you described your encounter, 600 was not far from what you should have paid at the outset. i seriously doubt she was actually a virgin.

4) did you also tip the mamasan? say it ain't so...

5) typical ktv girl is going to be more expensive, but not likely 2100rmb. 1500 maybe for the best of the best. but you can do cheaper and better in other venues.

sounds like you had fun, though, so that's a nice consolation. save your cash though, dude, you can get away with much much more for so much less.

Thanks Bonzo1. My experience there was almost identical. A costly night, but worth every kuai to me. If you have a group of at least 5 people or a supplier who will pick up the costs, you should try this place.

The ST and LT prices that were quoted to Bonzo1 are the same that I was quoted. Also my "girlfriend," who currently works there, has said repeatedly that those are the prices and that they don't move far from there. However, Rob Hay said he talked them down to 1200 on one night a few months ago (but they might have been quoting him short time in confusion). He did not take the girl out. Apparently most girls are taken for ST not LT from there anyway, according to my source. Probably because of the price.

N.B.--You can pay far less than this at other KTVs in Shanghai.

One thing for sure. If you look at enough lineups in this place, you are sure to find the girl of your dreams.

The "Anting Villas" is quite a good hotel in this price range, nicely located in a park in the former "french concession", on Anting Road, very quiet, and Hengshan Road with its bars, pubs & restaurants is 2 minutes walk away.
If not, I heart some good feedbacks of the "Howard Johnson All Suites"-Hotel on Yanan West Road, which is slightly above your price range (CNY 650 +).

I am sure other suggestions will come.
