The Place : Found myself in Tijuana Saturday evening and decided to check Las Chavelas. This place is next to Hong Kong and built like a typical Mexican bar but pretty decent sized with two entrances on North and South sides (like Hong Kong) and plays only Mexican music. There was a stage in the middle for a live band but I did not see any while I was there (told by the server that they are there after 8PM). I was told they share the same owner with Hong Kong but caters more to the locals than gringos.

How it works : You can buy the girls their Fichas ($7 of which they get $3 at end of their shift) and can sit with them or dance on the floor with them. The girls look a little more homely / natural (which can be a plus or minus based on your preference) than the ones in other bars like Adelitias and Hong Kong. Most only speak Spanish and you will need to be able to speak at least some level of Spanish to really be able to enjoy this bar. The girls range from average to some diamonds-in-the-rough but the Spanish disclaimer is still relevant. The cost of drinks is same as any other bar ($3. 50 for your beers/$7 for girls drinks). I invited a 21-year old to come have a drink with me and dance on a few songs and generally sit and hang-out with me. The experience is more like a typical Hostess Club in downtown LA than like AB or HK. We sat / talked / danced for about 45 minutes with 2 drinks for each of us. One important thing to note is that not all girls in this bar go upstairs to the room and are there to just make money of fichas. For those that do go upstairs. The standard $60 is the prevalent rate and they use the same hotel as Hong Kong uses (Cascadas).

Final Comments : It is a nice change of pace from HK and AB and the fun you can have is directly in line with how fluently you can speak Spanish. If you like to sit / drink / dance with your girls before you take them upstairs and can speak some level of Spanish to hold a conversation. This is a good place for a change!
