I'm already working on it. I'm reaching out to non-profit organizations, and academic think tanks on both sides of the border. The idea is to focus on figuring out what short term and long term changes need to be made to raise the general level of education and overall well-being of the people. Then once we come up with a plan we will lobby and advocate for those changes to be enacted. There are already lots of people working on these goals, but obviously a lot of work needs to be done.

One "solution" the Mexican government has come up with is opening up a new publicly funded military type boarding school in the Tijuana area where kids will be recruited from the poor neighborhoods to go to these schools and receive decent education and training. The idea is it will keep them out of trouble and make them productive citizens, as opposed to going down the wrong path into poverty and criminality. My opinion on this is, maybe their intentions are good but why does it have to be a military type academy? Why can't they just pump that same funding into the public school system already in place?

Tijuana has a booming booming economy, by Mexican standards and by any international standards. There is no shortage of money in Tijuana, therefore I think there's no reason why Tijuana shouldn't have the best education system in Mexico and even on par with American schools.

Just speculating. But the reason it's going to be a military academy is that the funding will come out of the defense budget. Let's be real. Someone has to pay for the improved public schools. The ultra elites in Mexico holds most of the money. They send their kids to Switzerland private schools. I just don't see them contributing. If defense pays for it, then they got to have a benefit. Besides. Kids from the poorest neighborhoods are a little rough around the edges. They are going to put a little more effort into tasks if their instructor looks and acts more like Lee Ermey than Shelly Duval.

This is off-topic, but something that's been a mystery to me; maybe you know: where do Mexicans here get all this money? They party every weekend like it's 1999. By any measure, Tijuana should be in the toilet, financially. There are very few US tourists in Tijuana right now and almost none on the beaches and it's been this way for over a year. I realize tourism isn't all there is to Tijuana, but exports in 2020 were down 6%, along with every other economic indicator.

A lot of Mexicans in Tijuana make a good living. Now, you aren't seeing the Tijuana school teachers and bus drivers blowing money in Tijuana. But I met many woman online who travel all over the world for vacations who have regular jobs. I met a lot woman in Tijuana that have been to places in USA I will never get to. I have a friend, who 2 years ago wanted her asylum in USA, now she won't leave Mexico. Even though she's without papers in maxixe and keeps getting fired as their government tracks downs illegals and forces their employer to fire them. But she finds new job, enjoys her cheap rent and low cost of living and sees the pictures and living condition if she moves to LOS Angeles to make 30 k a year cleaning hotel rooms and sharing a bedroom in a house of 15 people.

The San Ysidro California public school district looks the other way while US citizen kids cross the border every day to illegally attend American public schools there. I say "illegally" because even though they're US citizens they don't live in the district or pay taxes in the district. Therefore the taxpayer money that's supposed to be there for the education and enrichment if San Ysidro residents gets spread extra thin to support the out of district kids who are cheating the system. I honestly don't have a dog in this fight. If San Ysidro voters don't have a problem with it then it is what it is. But what I want to see is a reality where these kids don't see crossing the border every day and attending a school that they're not legally supposed to be attending as their best option. I want these kids to be able to attend good quality public schools in Tijuana. How do we make that happen? For now just keep organizing, keep lobbying, keep advocating for change and progress.

So many young people think of joining the military as their best option to get "good benefits", like health coverage, mortgage lending, financial aid for education, skills training. Young people shouldn't have to sign up to kill people and risk getting killed on behalf of some oil billionaires just so they can afford college or receive quality health insurance.

I have no idea what soldiers make nor do I care but the $ symbol is not exclusive to USD.

I never said it was. In the context he wrote it, it can only mean 2 things: USD or MXN. If it's MXN, it shouldn't be stated as $ regardless of what they do here to confuse the hell out of tourists. But, aside from that mostly moot point, Mexican soldiers don't make 2,000 pesos per month, nor do they make 7,000 pesos per month. The starting pay for an enlisted solder is about 15,000-16,000 pesos ($800) per month. Officers can make up to 37,000 pesos ($1,800) per month, depending on who you ask.

I still think it's good policy for any country, US or Mexico, to recruit or conscript young men and women, who are not succeeding in higher education, into military or civil services, away from gangs' and cartels' control drugs addiction and criminal life styles. Let military organization set them straight, train them for skills, teach them responsibility, discipline, setting goals in life, something their irresponsible, ignorant, alcoholic, drugs addicted parents fail to do. Let the drill sergeants straighten them out, train and teach them skills to fight crimes and drugs cartels, doing infrastructure or public works, and become straight and productive citizens for the rest of their lives. Countries would have to float more cash in their money market, which could cause short-term inflation, but that would stimulate the economy, develop infrastructure, improving productivity and outputs, while solving both unemployment and crime problems.
