Greetings all. So I was in HCH last spring and stayed in LE Lai street in a $20 a night place. Very good except they don't like me bringing in visitors. Sorry to inform you is 15 k one five to patch a flat tire and 80 k to replace inner tubing so is you paying 50 k just to patch you already overpaying if he paying 150 x that's 10 x as much tell your buddy well sone letting a uneducated bike repairman treat him as a fool.

If the tyre guy is smart enough to get 150 k for a repair he'll be smart enough to scatter some tacks and old nails on the road the next time he sees a sucker coming.

Agree, not sure why people would tip for bad service. I sure didn't and I try to keep it in check as well. Part of the game is getting a bargain price. This shows up in even normal day to day things and I just don't have the energy to argue when I am traveling with other people about over tipping and overpaying for everything. For example, I was traveling with a westerner on a scooter and he got a flat tire. Now, flat tires are generally in the 50 k range but the guy who fixed it asked for 150 k starting. My friend paid him 140 k, I'm like you can go lower it's typically 50 k but he said he "did a good job" and didn't want to spend time arguing over a few dollars as he is only here for a week. Thus, this inflates the price for every foreigner and will become expected / a norm. No way to really control that.

On the other hand, I think my mongering days are behind me. I would only have a handful of girls a year but I noticed that service has gone down the drain and not worth paying for anymore.

I would never tell anyone what to pay (I might advise, give price information). We are all free to choose how we spend our money.

In some situations I might try to point out that overpaying will ultimately lead to a lack of respect on the part of the service provider, and thus bad service. But many don't really care what they pay. Unfortunately they often don't have any real sense of what they could or should be getting in the way of quality and attitude.

I say by all means reward good service, just don't assume that more money is the best way to do it.

There are times to tip. But if someone always tips or never tips, they don't know how to tip.

Unfortunately this is exactly right. I been told by numerous people and have my own experience that service and attitude at NPK has taken a nose-dive since around the time the first shops started asking foreigners for 400 k. Some suggest that it's gone the way Benny's and My Tien did a few years ago, 'a bad BJ is worse than no BJ'. It's undoubtedly related to foreigners paying whatever is asked and even tipping extra on top of being overcharged 'because it's cheaper than on Mars'.

In a previous mild disagreement with another poster I suggested to a newbie that he should agree to 400 k at NPK because 1) I knew they would otherwise let him walk and 2) in an effort to restrict what he gave to 400 k and not to 'not have change' or 'not want to be cheap' etc. But it was game over at NPK by then.

I mentioned the general principle of tipping leading to poorer service to a friend at the weekend and got the usual puzzled reaction. I understand it is counter-intuitive, but he is the type who will tip big even if the sevice is bad to make them like him more next time. Economic masochism. Financial Domination is a real thing..

Based on reading this thread, I went to the hot tocs located on this street.

Nguyen Phi Khanh, Tan Dinh, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

I tried 2 different ones and both times they asked me for 400 k. I started with 200 k and went up to 300 k but they wouldn't budge from 400 k so I said why not. The girls barely used their tongue or mouth at all, it's more like a mediocre hand job. They try to jerk you off as fast as possible so they can take the money and leave. One wouldn't even let me touch her boobs, like barely and seemed like she wanted to get it over as quickly as possible. I never had that experience before where they felt repulsed. Anyways, I don't think I'll be mongering in Vietnam. Language barrier is too big of a gap and the girls don't seem into it (at least when it comes to me).
