Your reply is by no means inaccurate, though may be a little confusing for a newcomer to Vietnam, Wendella.

'Hot Toc' simply means 'hair salon' in Vietnamese. 'Toc' = 'hair' (on one's head). Thing is, there are many varieties of hair salons in HCMC and in Vietnam in general. Straight up and real hair salons serving male and female clientele, eye-candy hair salons which provide a bit of a cocktease to a largely male clientele but no hanky-panky on premises, salons that provide a manual release, salons which provide an oral release (B&G) , and salons that are essentially a bordello.

While the local Vietnamese and the long term foreign residents in HCMC such as Wendella and myself can tell the difference between these salons by just looking at the storefront, short term visitors to HCMC will likely not, nor likely stray beyond the boundaries of District 1 and 3. As such, they are (mainly) limited to the first 2 varieties.

As for the more 'naughty' establishments masquerading as hair salons, they have all been talked about on this board. For example, B&Gs in Binh Thanh District and in District 7, Bordellos in Tan Binh District near the airport. Mind you, in Vietnam hair salons of all colours of the rainbow are available, just have to know what you're in the mood for at any given time and patronize accordingly.

This is a great and helpful post. Can you expand the detail on how to recognise the three levels? You said as a local or expat local you can tell. Can you give a guide to how to tell the different levels from the storefronts, for example.

Have never gotten a lineup per se at any of the BJ venues I've frequented. Usually there's a girl waiting to take you by the arm and lead you upstairs. The next girl in line I guess. Ben Nie's Hot Toc is at 110 Dien Bien Phu, but Dien Bien Phu's numbers start from zero and increase in both directions from the roundabout that is next to the river channel, so there are two 110's, one on each side of the roundabout (I guess one is east the other west, or north or south, but it isn't marked any differently). If you end up at the 110 that is a restaurant (that is where my taxi driver dropped me) , you have to keep going around the roundabout, over the river channel, about two more blocks to Bennies which is clearly marked with lit signage. About 10 storefronts away is My Tien, another Hot Toc I will try tomorrow.

As has been described, the girls at Bennies are all pretty cute, solid 7's or 8's. I asked to pick my gal which may not be standard procedure but they didn't care.
