Here is something you can add to your knowledge of it in case you do not know. A person has to work a certain amount of time paying that tax inorder to receive the benefit later in life. There is a history involved with that tax. It goes back to President Roosevelt I believe. He created social security. It was sold as something you paid into by working with the promise of getting it back. A rich person who did not work was not supposed to get the benefit and neither should a large wage earner pay more than their share. I think the history lies at the beginning of all our social programs. I believe it is call Roosevelts New Deal. It is a bit ironic that you pick that out. There are two components the income tax component which is progress but the payroll tax is regressive. The rich pay the income tax but not the payroll tax after $147,000 USD per year.

It is progressive everything here and they take up to about 55% of your income and with social security close to 60% if you make over about 200000 USD up, but in USA as for income tax some states has none like Florida etc, but payroll tax? I do not know what that is, but I guess it is high % tax!
