A virus with a high death rate, like ebola kills their hosts too quickly to spread, however less deadly but highly infections covid-19 has the ability to infect everyone in the world and if you add up the numbers, a virus like this can do way more damage to the entire world. Until a few days ago, Germany basically adopted the same strategy of the UK. The government let the virus go (sort of "herd immunity" approach but without saying it), put trust on existing healthcare structures to face emergency and tricked on real figures of infections and deaths (still doing this last point).

Now things are changing and the government announced a huge plan to support business. The country hasn't been locked down yet, but Germans resumed borders control.

You are right, I should have been strongly suggesting back in January, and should have suggested this in December or earlier. I like to take a more positive view. Yes, societies and relationships are being forced to change. But as this lockdown continues, the desire for a return to normalcy also grows.
