I find it interesting that the German court supposedly cannot hold a defendant criminally liable for their own statements. In the States, many Defendants are convicted solely based on their own testimony.

You can't be forced to testify against yourself. However, you can certainly admit to committing the crime (and probably get a lighter sentence than if you don't cooperate). The prosecution can, I believe, ask for you to be sworn in. You can refuse, but that doesn't look good. If you are sworn in, then lying under oath is a serious offence.
