However it will invalidate the car rental company's insurance covering the collision damage waiver. I have had three incidents when renting cars in Germany (two times minor scratches, and one time running over something on the A3 near Limburg and ripping off the undercarriage). In no case did I call the police (although the Limburg incident happened at 1 AM so I could hardly go around looking for a police station at that hour and with the car in that condition). The credit card car rental insurance coverage was not invalidated by my not having a police report.

However, you need to be very careful to have good insurance coverage when renting with Sixt, as renting cars is just a way for them to get to their real business, which is grossly overcharging you or your insurance carrier for the tiniest damage to their cars.

The first incident was some minor scratches on the right rear tire fender, for which they wanted to charge me 1500 Euro in repairs (I got them down to 500 Euro after 8 months of negotiations, as I wasn't covered by my credit card insurance because they waited until the reporting period had lapsed to tell me they were charging me for the damage. Lesson: always report the damage to your insurance even if you don't hear from them.).

The other minor incident was a 1. 25 inch barely visible scratch on the right front metal tire rim for which they charged my insurance company 800 Euro. For the Limburg incident, they charged my insurance company 11,000 Euro to fix the undercarriage. In none of these instances could the cost to repair the damage have been anywhere near what they charged.

Wasn't aware that I must file a report for such instances, but I have called up my credit card company on noticible damage spotted on the car (which I verified was there prior). They only stated I file a claim on it after the charges by the rental agency(also that I was covered), but can't recall if there were any real explicit info similar to what you stated, but the process for me applies with Mastercard, Visa, from the the US.

I never had an incident in De, but I've had a close call a checker let it slide. Usually something minor, they let it go, but don't go by this(it's plausible the scamming agencies that you drop a huge deposit maybe more meticulous when they recheck the car), make sure to check the car well before taking it out of the lot. Also, check the receipt after the inspection, and have it handy for proof for any unforeseen disputes that my come up.

Car rental. I agree with PL that you are best sticking to the likes of Hertz. Europcar, and Sixt. Not the cheapest headline figures but I've never had problems with them, unlike with the cheaper companies.

I have actually rented with Threfty in other nearby countries outside De. In NL, Threfty was with Hertz, and didn't even ask for documentation from credit card company stating my card provides insurance. It's only in De have I run into such situation with Threfty or Dollar. Even in Austria, no situation with a small rental agency, and one situation I had with a car I mentioned above, the checker let it slide. Austria I was prepared with international driver's license, but didn't even ask for that. In De, IDL is not required, they will want to see your passport, but IDL is what you should have in case you get pulled over in countries that require it.

Driving in Germany is usually pleasant, with great patience by other drivers over mistakes you make. Just don't ever forget to watch your rear view for cars coming up at 250 km an hour, then you can make sure you are out of their way.

Be prepared for frequent traffic jams of say half an hour, and also for diverting off route because of road closures for repairs.

Despite all this a hire car is the only option if you want to visit clubs over a wide area and are on a limited time budget. But, for example, you could do Sharks, Oase,Mainhatten, and World by public transport if you stay in Frankfurt.

If you want to visit some tourist sites ,( Grosser Feldberg, Saalburg roman fort, the Limes Way, Munzenburg)in the Frankfurt area then a car will be essential.

Just stay out of the left lane on Autobahns in areas with no speed limits if your pedal isn't glued to the floor.

As for collision waivers and stuff, read the fine lines on the terms (every online rental will provide a terms of agreement). Generally, big companies like Sixt, Europcar, Hertz, etc. Tend to have good rental terms that do not need careful scrutinizing. If the rates are low, something is on the terms, so read carefully. In De, small rental places like Dollar, Threfty, etc. Will pull you in with low rates, but on the terms it will say you need to make a huge deposit (like 1 k) if you don't purchase the insurance. Platinum and World credit cards provide rental insurance in foreign countries (which includes De), with some exceptions. Credit card companies have different terms in duration of the rental insurance coverage (that should also be checked if you are planning extended stay in De). If you put in a lot of milage, check the terms for unlimited or not.

Obey the speed limits on the Autobahn, there could be speed cameras around. If you've seen a flash of colored light while on the bahn, that means the camera went off, and the insurance company will deduct a significant fee (from your credit card) for the ticket they got.

Smartphones have GPS, so you can purchase navigation app (German maps, or Western Europe or whatever) that do not require data. I think there are some free ones that pre-cache maps on the phones like the Nokia app called "HERE. ".

You purchase a Deutche Telekom sim, you can get the 99 cents per 25 meg per day deducted every time you activate from the funds you've topped up. And then on later trips, you can top-up at a gas station instead of having to search for DT.

If people are wondering if rentals are worth it or not. As yourself if drinking is really important, drive on the same side of the road as in De, add up the public transport costs (taxi, trains, etc.) and the convenient benefits to see if worth it.
