I cancelled a trip this past year but was credited the airfare. They gave me the option of full cash refund or a ticket voucher.

Hotels never charged a fee when I booked direct and cancelled. Another time I cancelled a flight booked through a travel aggregator (Hopper). I had problems getting the refund with them but my credit card quickly credited me my ticket cost.

I think the travel business is being quite accommodating and if they fail, credit card companies have your back.
