Traipsing around the city, I've seen all three on signage. The more I look, the more it appears that Dannok is the consensus choice among locals, but I've also seen both Dan Nok and Danok on official signage. I'm sure most of the Thais don't care one way or another, but it is funny.

You can see the double letter in the Thai script too although Thai has no space between words. LOL . If I was writing it in English script I would probably write Daan Noark. Round Two with the massage girl ran into a road block in the form of a shop owner who refused to let her leave the shop without the payment of additional "danegeld". Still, I learned something from the experience that might be of interest to other mongers.

I had gone out to meet my massage girl at 3:30 am. I went to a disco right across from her shop. It was still thumping. And at 3:30 am it was still packed with Malaysian mongers and Thai hookers. I'd say 70:30 in favour of the chicks. And it is probably that way still. I say this because it is now 7:15 am and the disco in my hotel (SP Sweet Hotel) is still pumping out the music. Even Pattaya starts to run out of steam at around 5 am. But Dannok is still cranking (or at least it is tonight: Friday night) at 7:30 am.

Well the massage girl experiment took a while to get off the ground. There are no beer bars that I have found, but massage shops and pseudo-karaoke places abound. They can be found on both sides of the road that runs through the middle of town, and when I say they abound, I mean that they are side-by-side-by-side in almost unbroken strings along many Sois.

I have spent six weeks in Pattaya stretching over three visits and I have walked the red light area from the soapy massage parlours opposite the shopping complex on Second Road all the way to the end of Walking Street, and I would judge the red light area in Dannok to be bigger. Pattaya, with its beer bars and go go bars, offers more variety for the monger (and more more places to drink (and waste money drinking)). I have seen nothing similar in Dannok but Dannok seems to make up for it in terms of the sheer number of places where you can walk and walk right back out with a lady. And the picking starts early. I spent an hour talking with a mamasan at one establishment: they open at 9 am and the best girls will have been booked by 10 am!. You will pay more for that lady in Dannok, but you will avoid the wastage on bar fines and lady drinks. Still, on balance, I think Pattaya has a slight edge except. When it come to accommodation – quality and price – Dannok has a decided edge. Rooms of good quality can be had here for 500 to 600 baht. Rooms of reasonable quality can be had from 400 baht. And all of these hotels are nestled in a sea of take-out massage parlours and pseudo-karaokes! You won't pay much for a room, you won't have to walk far to find a lady, and you won't spend a ton of money on booze.

One other bid difference: I was the only Caucasian to be seen on the streets of Dannok today. Yesterday I think I saw one other. But I never felt unwelcome or unsafe.

Short time sessions are possible: the pimps want an eye-watering 2,000 baht for that, also in advance. And the way these pseudo-KTVs work, the money is paid upfront to get the girls out the door. I was able to muster one additional session out of Miss Lao, right after I finished writing the first report: guess it got me in the mood to try and get my money's worth. That would have been at around 5 am. She took some persuading since she sleeping soundly after having been up (and after having pretty much kept me up) most of the night playing with her cell phone! Anyway, she just left and I can't say I'm sorry. Feel bad for her, though: if she were a little more attentive to customer needs she would have walked out of here with a much bigger tip. And if she turned better service into a habit, instead of sending a paltry 30,000 baht home each month she could be sending 40,000 or 50,000 baht.

The beaches in Langkawi? Neither fish nor fowl. If you're looking for a broad beach with good restaurants and bars strung out alone its length, nothing beats Boracay (at least in my experience). Haad Yao in Koh Phangan is also up there, albeit on a smaller scale, as are many coves on Koh Phangan. Cenang is like Boracay's retarded half-brother: very disappointing. Physically, the views are nice, but the water is murky, and the sand is a little on the gray side.

In my case, after scouting around for a few hours I was persuaded to look at a few line-ups and settled on a good-looking, bubbly, slender 21 year old Laotian. When asked to pay 3,000 baht I walked away. But the pimp chased me down on his motorbike and after a bit of haggling we agreed on 2,700 baht: too much for sure by Pattaya standards but it was late, I was tired, and it was better than what had been on offer in Lankawi.
