I am interested in opinions on crime and safety in Jaco

I visited many times, but not for 3 years. It was always very safe. Has it changed? I always stayed at Pochote Grande, on the North side.

    Playa Del Coco

I find it hard to believe there is no monger action, The putas of Liberia come each evening down to coco to take care of the tourists etc. Maybe this site does not have any activity to report. I was there in April of 2006 and saw plenty of putas to keep me entertained.

    papagayo

I just get back from Papagayo and I can tell you there are no action. Travel to Coco beach doesn't see anything there either. There is one casino that I saw but did not go in!

    Playa del coco

Any one been there lately, had some nice action a few years ago at the Hotel Verde Best Western.

I have to add my voice to the others that arenīt crazy about Jaco. It was the only place, including San Jose and Rio, where I really didnīt feel safe. Lotīs of drugs and hustle on the street. I went into the Beatle Bar twice and found most of the girls ugly to fair, and again, too much noise and hustle. I didnīt even bother to partake.

I stayed at Claritaīs in Jaco and would highly recommend it. Itīs 70 per night and right on the beach, with good food and a lively bar.

I loved Montezuma. Arenal was ok, the volcano awesome!

    Overall Costa Rica Playa Trip

So over the last six days, I've been touring the beaches and I have to admit that I picked some of the best days to go!

I have to reiterate one thing and that is if you plan on renting a car, make sure it is a 4x4 or else you may regret it bigtime. Otherwise, you may be limited in your options of where you are able to go.

Playa Hermosa - Is not a place to monger but is great if you just want to relax and take a day off and recharge.

Playa Tamarindo - I stayed at the Hotel Tropicana and I have to say that it was a great option for being right in the center and noticed that there was some action at the Jazz Casino just 50 meters on your left as you exit the hotel. There was pretty good talent on the night but I had hooked up with a local girl that I bumped into on the beach and while it didn't pan out the way I had hoped, it didn't cost me anything either and still had a great dinner with her while she wouldn't even let me pick up her bill.

I did ask some of the girls what their rates were and they started at $100 but one girl quickly went down to $80 without me countering. Remember that I do speak Spanish but anyone can just smile and act dumb by putting on a sad face and just saying, "oh, I would love to spend some time with you but I only have $50."

Just say, "lo siento, solamente tengo cincuenta dolares" and then put a sad face on. You'd be amazed how often that works for me. Once you have that cleared up, if you haven't already asked your qualifying questions, you need to do that now.

Playa Samara - This place is loaded with foreigners studying Spanish so if you are a little younger, you should be able to have a good time hitting on some cute girls at Las Olas or La Gondola. This is not a quick pick up place so don't expect this place to be easy but I did have a good time making out with a girl since she was sad it was Valentine's day and no one to kiss.

Playa Mal Pais/Montezuma - Again, lots of very hot foreigners but not much luck with the local girls. If you have some game, the foreigners could be very easy with the right approach....remember, on vacation, they have their guard down a little bit more.

Puntarenas - I hit major gold here since they are having their festival right now and there were just amazing hotties everywhere. I had no problem striking up conversations and didn't even need to pay so I would recommend going to any town while it's having a little festival!

Manuel Antonio/Quepos - I think it's been covered that there is pro-talent here but the pickings didn't look good to me. All I saw was street action since I was with someone already and I didn't go to any of the clubs.

Well, that is all I could cover on the beaches but with a good attitude and a smile, Costa Rica is actually better non-pro action then pro-action! All of my best times in Costa Rica have been with non-pros besides a couple of special situations. If you want to try your hand at non-pro action, Costa Rica isn't a bad place to check out.

    Playa Jaco Report

I have visited Costa Rica many times. Usually, I stay in San Jose at the Hotel Presidente (nice but slightly overpriced).

Because, it's close to San Jose I visited Playa Jaco. I decided instead of renting a car and trying to figure out the route, I took a bus. The price was very reasonable, you can find there routes at interbusonline.com. I have nothing to do with the company.

I stayed a little hotel almost right across the street from the Monkey bar. Make you ask for a room near the rear of the Hotel because of the noise from the bars/street.

Jaco is not a pretty city, but the people where very friendly. There is basically one main street. During the day as I was walking on the side walk. I had several girls smile and start a converstion. At night I went to Beatle bar for a couple of beers. Around 11:00 pm, I noticed a couple of police enter the bar and walk to the rear. I really didn't think much of it at the time. Soon there where a lot of police. Now it seem really strange because there was no one fight. By now there must have been about 50 to 75 police inside with another 15 or 20 at the front. A lot of the girls where starting to panic. It turns out it was an immigration raid. The police where fairly nice to the tourist.

One of the girls from Costa Rica starts to laugh. Next 2 large buses show up and they start checking the papers of the girls and they starting loading the buses. The next day I was talking to the guys of the Hotel that I was staying at. The guys where American surfers from California. One of them got throw in jail, it seems he didn't have proof of his citizenship. Always keep copies of your passport on you.

I spent 3 or 4 days, and had a good time. Jaco was pretty good.

    Change

    Actually fellas,

Looks like the only time I will be spending only one night in Costa Rica, and I will head to Panama via bus. It is an 18 hr drive, and we will most likely break it up into several days/stops. My flight home has been changed to depart Panama city. I will report on all relevant areas.

    Thanks again.

    Thank you guys.

Yes I will be spending thursday night in "el pueblo", as in the bar/restaurant/shop maze. Monteverde, I assume, will be enjoyable, as my friend has been there for quite some time and knows his share of locals as well as international students with whom he's been working.

I have been to Jaco and most of the beaches within a few miles, and to be honest, wasn't my cup of tea. I would settle for even a smaller beach community and focus on the culture and people if I need to. If it is that strenuous I will opt to wait until monday night when I return to San Jose to catch my Tuesday flight. There, one of my favorite bars for non-pro action, El Cuartel de le Boca del Monte (sp?), hosts still, I believe, ladies nights on Mondays. If all else fails it will visiting El Pres, I suppose.

Looks like, based on your feedback folks, I should be choosing between Montezuma and Samara (sp). Any other feedback would be appreciated, otherwise I will do a bit more research and or will let my friend decide based on what he is told by his people in Monteverde. Certainly I will post a report on all cities/towns/bars involved.

    Thanks again,

    Tom

Jaco Beach is one of the worst things about jaco; going there to P4P ain't bad lately, and probably the only beach town that has it, but don't go if you are looking for a beach you'd write home about. Manuel Antonio is a very nice beach, maybe 90 minutes south.

    Quick clarifications.

I assume you mean you'll spend the EVENING at El Pueblo in the northern part of San Jose. Its not a town in of itself, just a commercial center with lots of bars, restaurants and shops and there are no hotels there to spend the night.

Monteverde (one word) is in the Santa ELENA area and if you find any local action there be sure to let us know but I'd be very surprised (the area was settled by Quakers). Your only possible chance would be if your friends know someone to fix you up with.

Of the beach towns you mentioned (Samara, Montezuma, Puntarenas). Montezuma would be my personal first choice, followed by Samara and dead last would be Puntarenas, which functions mostly as just a scummy port town that people pass through on their way by ferry to Nicoya. However of those 3 places only Puntarenas would I consider "to be feasible to return to san jose fairly easily" and that fails miserably for "nice beaches". Samara is directly across the Nicoya Peninsula from Monteverde but on very bad roads and for Montezuma your choice is even worse roads or having to catch a ferry across the gulf, either of which greatly adds to your travel time. Your best bet for nightlife, restaurants AND easy return to SJ would be Jaco (also plenty of P4P) but that will also have lots of tourists. Those things sort of go together. Places without a lot of tourists tend to not have much in the way of restaurants and nightlife (or P4P except in the local sailor brothel washed up puta sort of way). And non-pro local women in small communities aren't going to be as easy a nut to crack for one night stands with some gringo breezing through town when everyone they know is around looking.
