Interesting to find this post here. I'm an ex Su viditor that just tried Colombia for the first time. I was at BB earlier this year for the first time, although I had been going to Sosua for years.

Transportation and Check-In.

This time, I flew into Puerto Plata (POP) instead of Santiago (STI). The Puerto Plata airport seems to welcome the tourist trade more than the Santiago airport does. There was actually a trio of musicians (drum, shaker, and accordion) playing in the corridor just off the jetway. They were decked out in floral shirts and seemed to be having a great time. Later, I stopped at Jenny's again on my way home to change some of my extra Dominican pesos back into US dollars; once again, the transaction fees were tiny.

I know it seems corny, but it was really nice to be welcomed by a few chicas cheering my arrival. Check-in went quickly. I paid for my room in cash (US dollars) and signed the blank account ledger for my room. I still wish BBs would adopt a more modern account system so that you could monitor your tab total in real time. To prevent myself from losing track of my expenses and getting a nasty shock at check out, I paid cash for all my meals and drinks.

The Room.

I requested and received room D2. It was where I stayed my first time at BBs; suffice it to say it has good memories for me. There's a comfortable king-sized bed with a firm mattress and lots of pillows, a couch with a coffee table in front of it, a small round table with two chairs, a refrigerator, and a moveable adjustable 4-foot mirror that can be angled to give you a view of all the action. The place feels spacious, with windows on two sides. It has plenty of closet storage and a room safe. The room was clean but needed maintenance. The Clientele.

There have been a lot of discussions on this board over the years about the experience at Blackbeards. Some guys prefer the thrill of the hunt they get in places like Sosua. Other guys don't get much out of that and like the easy pickings Blackbeards offers. To each his own.

While I was there, Blackbeards celebrated its 20th year of operations. They're obviously doing something that appeals to a lot of men – and doing it well. Places with similar business models like the Veneto in Panama City and Campo Alegre in Curaçao have (alas) gone out of business, but Blackbeard's continues. It doesn't change much. They've got a formula that works. It doesn't try to compete with establishments in the DR that offer 5-star luxury and a model-perfect 23-hours-a-day female companionship -- but it doesn't charge $1200 a day either. Blackbeard's is a little cheesy, a friendly and fun place to be, and an unpretentious destination for guys who want to relax, unwind, and get their rocks off. There's nothing at all wrong with that.
