You have a few replies. Here's my two cents.

I personally rent only from national rental chains. I have had good experiences with Budget at the POP airport. I had a small accident, started the paperwork at the airport, completed the process in the US, with the national level Budget people. My credit card insurance covered everything. I doubt it would have been so smooth with a local Dominican company.

Spanish would be very useful at all levels.

If you aren't accustomed to Third World driving, be very alert, and drive defensively. DR drivers, particularly on the motoconchos have a suicidal disregard for cars around them that is infuriating.

They dart in and out, get too close, and drive on all sides, like buzzing mosquitoes.

Years ago, I was paused in the left lane, left turn signal on, waiting for oncoming traffic to pass. When it was clear, I started my turn, only to have a motoconcho slam into my door at an angle, tearing off the mirror on the door. The idiot was driving down the center of the road, oblivious of my obvious attention to make a turn in front of him.

A long story I have told before; will spare you the rest right now. But it illustrates my point.

I've done it many times, what do you want to know? Do you have experience driving in a third world country? Do you speak spanish?

Take detailed pics and video of the car beofe you drive it.

From what I've seen on various travel blogs about DR, the rental staff will not hesitate to try to rip you off by claiming you are responsible for all kinds of damage to the car, whether you caused it or not. So when the clerk hands you the keys, take him / her with you and do a full walk around of the car taking pics and video from all angles to document all body damage, paint scratches, damaged tires, cracks in windows, etc. Point out each flaw on the video and ask the clerk to acknowledge that it's there. Don't sign the rental form (or hand over your credit card if possible) until you have verified and documented the car's condition.

Also, don't' be surprised if you are driving on a road or highway and a local LE officer pulls you over or stops you at an intersection. They are looking for a bribe and will either suggest you violated some traffic law or just tell you they need money for gas (dinero para gasolina). My advice: pay it and smile. It's probably not going to be more than 1,000 to 2,000 DOP ($10 to $20 USD). Sure you can take the righteous path and refuse. But do you really want to be arrested and tried by a corrupt legal system in a country with a corrupt government?

I rented a car last January in Sosua to drive around the island. There are plenty of rent a car places around.

    From where? New York?

I remember many years ago when I was staying at Harbor View, one of the guys said he was from Canada, and a chica asked him how long it took to drive down.

It works both ways. You are from a richer country where selling sex is illegal I presume. So the girl you described was already a hooker and went to get certified in massage so she could conduct her hooker business under the guise of massage therapy. In poorer countries mfs are looking for something better to do so they won't have to sell sex.

Yes, the masseuse at BB is named Maddie, been there for years now and everything is legit. No extras. Her office is right across from the office. You must pay at the office. I think it was 500 p / half hour. Her massage to me is just OK, nothing speciall. She also does manicures and pedicures like mentioned. One of the more popular.

Chicas on site at BB named China (She has an oriental look, but is not oriental), speaks english and gives a fantastic massage.

And $DR1500 is a lot more than $DR500 and given that BB's is an adult resort I wouldn't be surprised.
I don't know the current masseuse at BB, but the previous one got the training precisely so she could earn a living without selling sex anymore.

Likewise, she offered manicures, pedicures for the same reason.

Regarding your local masseuse, I presume having a certificate gives her something to wave at law enforcement, to prove she is "legit. ".

I know I could just get one of the regular chicas to give me a massage but having it done by a trained expert followed up by BBBJ would be awesome. She doesn't even have to look that good, LOL!

No. It's not done in room and she doesn't offer extras. They make it clear when you book the massage that this is the case.

Other's have mentioned bringing their own oil and getting a massage from their chica. I never tried that myself. Maybe the mamasans can recommend someone.
