You will not be disappointed. At least you can work out a fairly accurate budget before you arrive. Though bring a surplus or a usable bank card in case of contingencies.

My first ever trip to the DR I stayed two weeks at Blackbeards and loved it. I could easily have stayed another two weeks.

Other guys get bored there after two or three days, but I think they are mostly more experienced mongers who like a bit of adventure. (That could be you on your second trip and, trust me, when it is time to leave you will already be planning your return to the DR).

How long are you staying for? If more than four days you may want to get out of Costambar for a few hours in the daytime when things are quieter at Blackbeards. You cannot be fucking 24 hours a day, especially if you are on a budget. If you want to have a look at nearby Puerto Plata city, where I live, I would be happy to meet up in the daytime. But on two conditions: you will need a phone that works in the DR. (You can buy a local SIM card for US $3 to $5). And to PM me with its number you will need a subscription here.

Unless money is no object, Blackbeards is the only all-inclusive place which offers reasonable vale for money. I would not waste your time investigating the others. Some are blatant rip-offs, the rest do a good job but at absurd prices.

Your options are:

1) Blackbeards.

2) A free-range vacation in Sosua or another town or city.

3) Mix and' match (1) and (2), in which case it makes more sense to start at Blackbeards to get a feel for things in a "sheltered" environment.

If you are physically unfit or cannot speak a word of Spanish or lack all street-smarts (like me on my first DR trip) then I would definitely stick to Blackbeards for your first trip.

If you have lots of confidence, can speak some Spanish, and are street-wise, you may find better value for money and a more varied holiday going free-range.

If you are somewhere in between those two extremes, only you can judge which is best.

Been to both twice a year for the last 2 years. Will be changing that next year to MDE mansion 3 X & BB 1 x a year. Prices are similar, but MDE is a first world country with 3rd world rates. I find the mansion girls hotter than the BB girls. Food is definitely better in MDE & you can actually drink the water without any concerns like the DR. No rip off taxi rates in MDE too.

Except of arrival of Uber there was no significant change at BB.

I tried to find any mention on the BB website, but could find nothing on renting cars. Something new? From whatever source, my impression is that this is your first time in the DR. If so, I'd suggest using a driver. Observe traffic, how motoconchos buzz around cars on all sides like mosquitos, etc. Try contracting a local driver. I understand Uber has found its way to Puerto Plata.

First time at BB's. Second time in D. R. As I was in Sosua last year for a week with friends.
