Going to Tegu for business in a few months and would welcome any tips or advice. Speak the language, familiar with the country. Used to be a happy hunting ground in the 1980's, but the last few times I went since 2005 were very sad. Given how few reports are posted on this page, it was easy to find my trip reports from 2009, 2006, and 2004.

In Tegucigalpa google map search for 'Kabaret' -although the current name of the establishment is VIP something. I only walked on Blvd Morazan for lunch and early dinner, did not see any street action. There are strip malls on the Blvd Morazan but I did not visit any of them. I must say that I left hotel with only hard cash in Lempiras equivalent of 20-30 Euros, no watch, no cell phone nada.

I'd say that Blvd Morazan is walkable in daytime, there are some coffee shops that came recommended to me by a US person who is now living in Tegu as a teacher. She recommended 'Sigua' coffee shop which is on the street between Morazan and Ave LOS Proceres. She also recommended 'Matambritas' for best burgers which is right where Sigua coffee shop is. I only ate at Lebanos and at El Patio, both walkable and on Blvd Morazan. I also recommend staying at Aparthotel Las Hortensias. The only negative was not having a fridge in the room -although it may be available if you ask but I didn't as I was only there for couple of nights. There is also a western quality grocery store near hotel and is on google map -search for 'Supermercado La Colonia'. This store has everything you'd need to stock up in your room.

I will happy to give you the driver contact in Tegu in case you decide to go.

Regarding my last night in Tegu, the flaquita showed up right on time at 8 PM -throughout the day she was sending me messages and photos of her getting ready for the visit for TLN What a cutie. She lives north of the city about half hour by taxi (according to her) -same young kid transported her two days in a row for 150 Lempira each way that I gladly paid him. A couple of things. When you read about the murders and crime in the paper how many of those are tourists? I venture to say none. I have mentioned this in other forums but, the people who are being murdered are mostly opposing gang members, or people who are involved in extortion, have borrowed money from the gangs and haven't paid it back etc. They do not target tourists. The newspapers sensationalize everything especially here in the US. They will have you believing that as you walk off the plane you will be gunned down or kidnapped. It simply isn't true. If you stay out of Gang infested areas and use minimal common sense a tourist will be as safe in Tegus as any where else.

Despite being in rest of Central America, I must admit that this has been one hell of a nerve wrecking trip for me so far. All days leading up to my trip I was reading local Honduran newspapers such as El Heraldo http://www.elheraldo.hn/ and every day the paper was filled with the dreaded words of 'Matan' and 'Asesinadas'. And today while sitting in my hotel in Tegu yet once again I read the headline in El Heraldo that translates to:

"The victims in these first six months of 2018, mostly men totaled 70 Hondurans who lost their lives in 21 massacres".

And that headline overshadowed the headline earlier this morning where a mechanic was shot dead when he was called to repair a taxi on a bridge.

So one must ask the question, what drives us (yes you the readers and I) to keep doing this, travel thousands of miles to places such as Honduras and risk our lives. However since this is not the forum to delve into the deeper questions of 'existentialism' -let me just get to why you are reading this.

Arrival at TGU:

Bad time for my flight arrival as three or four other flights arrived at the same time including flights from Miami, Costa Rica and El Salvador. I haven't seen this many Jesus and Christ related T shirts and tote bags in my life. Why are Americans so religious compared to Europeans? We can skip this question too as this is not the forum to delve deeper into existence, actually lack thereof a god. Anyhow in a long immigration line several that came off of flights from USA were some sort of missionary, holding bibles, musical instruments for their choir and wearing Jesus freak clothing. The couple I was chatting with in the line had been coming to Honduras for 20 years on Jesus missions. I politely lied to them when they asked about my reasons of travel to Honduras.

The processing time per person at the immigration kiosk was way too long. I timed it, the immigration officers were on average taking 5-7 minutes per person and that process included finger printing 4 fingers on each hand followed by two thumbs. If you are carrying an extra digit, you will be responsible for adding extra wait time for the people waiting in line behind you. Never mind the fact that every so often the officer had to wipe clean the scanner, adding more time and / or borrow the immigration stamp from the adjacent booth. So that begs yet another question -instead of wasting hours of resources finger printing peaceful visitors, tourists, missionaries and horn dogs, shouldn't the government of Honduras be spending more resources on tackling the astronomical murder and crime rate in their capital city? But since this is not the forum to discuss law enforcement philosophy either, let's skip this question too.

Transportation & hotel:

If anyone needs a solid and reliable transportation person, PM me. I was fortunate to find one prior to my arrival and he was awaiting for me at the airport arrivals holding name card for the fake name I had given him. Sometimes paranoid knows no bounds. He works for or operates a transportation company and provides airport transfers, hourly service and tours etc. He doesn't speak English but he has another guy in his team who does.

Based on Loso69's last report on this forum I also opted for the same hotel and didn't regret it. Loso69 if you are reading this, the corner market store is no more and Kabaret around the corner is now called 'Pussy Cats VIP'. Since I am not a VIP, I don't think I'd be visiting it.

Restaurants:

During pre trip research, had dropped couple markers on the google map. One of those places is called 'El Patio' which is open 24 hours and get rave reviews. However my solo visit there along with my driver was nothing to write home about. I did however manage to get the phone number and subsequently photos of our waitress and she is in play if I had time on my hands and not too many balls to juggle.

Despite all the doom & gloom about Tegu on this forum, I had little hopes of scoring anything as the place sounded like a wasteland. Boy was I wrong or what! In less than 24 hours, I have nutted 4 times with three different girls and two are lined up for tonight. Yes, it's all here but requires a lot of hard work, persistence and Spanish.

Secondly, they have implemented that stupid finger printing thing because of pressure from the US. They want everyone and everything documented. The information they gather is shared with the US. Usually on flight manifests and watch lists. I am quite sure the US has funded the upgrading of the finger print scanners (along with other things) or has threatened to cut funding or restrict travel to the US of Honduran citizens if they didn't comply.

I am glad you found so much good talent in Tegus. I guess for me it seems like a waste land because their are few clubs and strip joints or at least one's of any quality. It seems like you found the secret to success and that is excellent!

I too have been to the Patio restaurant. I thought it was great. They had some cheese dish that was out of this world.

I have done San Salv a few times. Great sex but a boring city. Guate could be a great destination if only they had a little more going on at night. The city was a graveyard after rush hour. Otherwise I found many budget offerings to satisfy my needs. However being in a hotel at 7 pm until the next morning took a toll on me.

I thought maybe there were hidden gems in Honduras due to the off the beaten path reputation it holds. I am willing to disregard warning signs for a good deal.

San Pedro Sula scene is nothing that is going to knock your socks off but, Its fine with a few higher end clubs and you will have a good time. What I like about San Pedro is exactly what you mentioned. There is more to do. I went white water rafting, to the beach, took a ferry to Roatan, saw some beautiful sights all within about two hours drive of San Pedro Sula. I can spend a week there and not be bored.
