    crime in Nicaragua

Get a grip on reality guys!

I lived for two years in Managua and never once had problems with crime. I spent way more time in the seedier barrios of Managua as all my friends were 25 year-olds, bar tenders, just your normal unemployed barrio-rats, working girls, dancers, and yes …… the true Nicaraguans of the city. I had the most fun of my life living, loving and hanging with the poorest of the poor Nicaraguans. Without exaggeration, 2-3 nights per week I spent in Villa Venezuela (very near the club called Polanco) living and playing with friends from the strip clubs and brothels. Go to the police department in Managua and check what minimal crime statistics they have and you will see that Villa Venezuela is considered one of the two highest crime areas in the city. And I never, not once, had a problem in two years. That is not merely dumb luck, that just shows that Managua is not the hot-bed of crime as being portrayed in this thread.

Now, guys, don’t be absolute morons out there. Be careful, watch your back, and don’t walk down the streets at three in the morning dead drunk and looking to get mugged. Be smart. However, Guatemala City, San Salvador and San José are very, very much more dangerous cities than is Managua.

Managua may be a total dump. But it is a relatively safe, fun adventure.

    Crime and Punishment in Nicarauga

Mga is dangerous. Just like any other large latin american capital. The rest of Nicarauga is considerably safer.

    Just observe the following precautions:

    A) Don't walk the streets at nite. In the nightclub/tourist areas there are guards on the corner. This means these areas are safer, but NOT 100% SAFE. Don't be lured into a false sense of security and idly walk around late at nite in these areas just because there are guards. Keep your late at nite walking around to a bare minimum. If you have to walk a block a block or so in a guarded tourist area in order to find a cab, then so be it. In unguarded areas, I wouldn't walk a foot late at nite.

    B) Take a Taxi everywhere you go. Taxis are cheap and plentiful. Avoid the gypsy cabs like the plague. I ran into trouble once getting into a gypsy cab. Only get into taxis from a fleet with a recognizable brand name.

    C) Do not pickup streetwalkers. This is dangerous. There are plenty of attractive women available in the chongos. Chongos offer a more secure more controlled environment. The chongo price is about the same as the streetwalker price.

EDITOR'S NOTE: I would suggest that the author or another Forum Member consider posting a link to this report in the Reports of Distinction thread. Please Click Here for more information.

Artisttyp - I wrote a Trip Report on 10/28/2007 with phone #'s and addresses of a large number of chongos. This is not as comprehensive as a Tungrunghua mongering guide, but still useful. It is a bit dated now. Chongos tend to move around alot in Managua. Since then, Meat Loaf has posted some corrections and updates.

    Recommended Chongos:
Club Fenix (still at same location)
Good Times (still at same location)
    Claudias

For location and phone numbers, follow this link to my trip report:

Water Boy, what other requirements do you have before blessing a lady with your manhood?
Why should I spend my Cordobas on some old overweight skank at SalvadorII, when I can get a 20-25 year old for the same price at Fenix or Good Times?

I was thinking the same thoughts, although Whole 9/10th of an inch does have some great story lines. I wont said anything else, I'm trying to take the high road. Oh, just sold my place. Leaving the babes in Atlanta, starting the research for Jacksonville / Morehead City , North Carolina. Hope I can find me a big titty Marine - thats what I'm talking about.

    Greetings Everyone,

The Whole 9 wants everybody to know that he has decided to retire from The Forum because he will no longer be able to post negative reports about Nicaragua.

I deleted his post because I do not allow "Goodbye Forever" posts in the forum, generally because these posts amount to nothing other than a public "Kiss Off" from Serial Antagonists who are trying to stir up one final round of trouble before they switch to another alias.

    Thanks!

    Desnudo: Get Naked

    Criminal Justice

I was hanging out one day at my friend's retail store located alongside his home. We shared conversation and sights of the "hood rats" walking around his neighborhood. After our Tona liter ran out, I decided to walk two (2) blocks to the bodega / aborrotes / tienda / pulperia / mini-super for a refill. He stepped inside his home to attend to some family concern. (In Nicaragua at least four (4) people (grandmother, mother, daughter, child of the daughter) are at home at all times.)

I purchased the Tona and began walking back. Upon my arrival at his retail store, I witness him sequestering a drunken ladron (thief) in the corner. Holding a steel folding chair in a striking position above the ladron's head he shouted commands. He informs me, of course 100% in Spanish, that he caught the ladron attempting to steal "anything" from the store while he was within the home. The ladron stated no and apologies.

Tired of watching violence as a result of theft, I witnessed with disgust and Gringo astonishment. I then remembered I live in Nicaragua. He asked me what should be done to the ladron. (Calling the police is not an option or reality.commonly, if the populace wants police assistance they load the "suspected" thief into the trunk of the car or taxi and drive him / her to the police station. Nicaraguan car trunks carry more "suspected" thieves than they carry spare tires! ) He suggested the ladron be tied to the street pole for a few hours underneath the high-noon sun. No rope was available so that idea vanished. He then suggested the ladron should return home without clothing.

(ISG readers: I write these reports so you may have a full-picture, well-rounded idea of Nicaragua beyond a few *****house stories. I too rely upon ISG for truthful insights into various locations globally. I rely upon ISG as a valuable source. Therefore, my stories are meant to educate, and not entertain. Remember, "the hobby" is illegal and I'm attempting to enlighten you as to your role within society. The only differences between Nicaragua and your major USA ghettoes are that Nicaragua is much much worse, Spanish fluency is required, and just like the USA- skin color, age, and demeanor are factors in the assimilation process.)

Impressed with the suggestion, yet feeling sorry for the drunken ladron, my friend instructed him to derobe. Having interviewed the ladron my friend developed sympathy, but with neighbors and passing traffic viewing the situation something had to be done. Normally violence is perpetuated, but not this day. The ladron looked about late-40s.

The ladron requested no to the derobe and requested another form of punishment. His other option was getting hit by the steel folding chair. He chose the desnudo (get naked.) T-shirt and long pants were removed at his choosing. What remained were tennis shoes and boxer shorts. He was then informed to return the following day to retrieve his t-shirt and long pants. Embarrassed, he began walking down the street quickly. It's not uncommon to see people with little or no clothing regardless of age.

My friend and I didn't laugh or take glee in his flight, but were more inconvienced at the situation.

Shouts, heckles, and other forms of mockery were directed at him by the citizenry. His drunken skin and demeener made it visibly clear that he was a drunk, and not a robbery victim. (I doubt being a robbery victim would create much sympathy.)

The following morning he returned to the store and retrieved his clothing. The ladron even thanked us for being such gentleman. Maybe next time he'll be lucky and get assaulted physically.

Real-Life Question: With law enforcement non-existent, what else can a theft / robbery victim do besides violence to protect their assets?

    Criminal Practice

It's a common practice depending on neighborhood for criminals to derobe their victims. The derobing is performed for a few reasons: (1) embarrassment, (2) allow the thieves to flee, and (3) the need, not deisre, for clothing.

The neighborhoods and locations where this event may occur are too numerous to list. The ghettoes are in too much abundance to detail. What's more of a challenge is listing middle-class or wealthy neighborhoods versus los guettos (ghettoes.)

Again, if your not comfortable in the USA ghetto, I would recommend cutting your teeth first in the USA before considering Nicaragua. And read each of my posts thoroughly for what Nicaragua will offer you at some point face-to-face!

    ================================================

    Greetings The Whole 9,

I appreciate your contributions to the Forum. However, your recent series of reports focused on criminal activity in Nicaragua is beginning to appear like you are attempting to paint an overtly negative image of Nicaragua in order to dissuade anyone from visiting.

Fortunately, and specifically to combat deliberate disinformation, the Forum's Posting Guidelines limit members to ONE negative post related to reporting criminal activity.

In other words, you've hit your limit, and further negative reports regarding criminal activity in Nicaragua will be deleted without comment.

    Thanks,

    Jackson

Gringo Gets Robbed at Gun Point by Taxi Driver

This story was revealed to me by the victim.

The more time you spend in Nicaragua, the more crime you see! This is not the place for those that respect life, limb, or security. It's just a matter of time until you meet the crime face-to-face: Everyone will meet crime face-to-face in Nicaragua! And police are not there to help you!

In the past, citizens have asked me if I have ever been a victim of a taxi driver. Over-charging a taxi fare would be the "Gringo" response? The local response is, have you ever been robbed by a taxi driver? Your answer determines your "Nicaragua Credibility" 'cause in Managua armed robbery by taxi driver (s) is a common and expected occurrence. With 25, 000 taxi cabs transversing the city, it's anyone's guess who is thief and who is a preacher.

"Gringo Bilingual Resident" was leaving the most affluent location in Manauga- The Galleria Mall- when he boarded a taxi. This is one of only a few locations where Caucasians feel at-home, safe, and comfortable. (The other location is the MetroCentro Mall. Beyond these two locations, Caucasians stand-out in the crowd much like Blacks or Latinos stand-out in your USA neighborhood / subdivision! And this easy visibility brings about "special" attention, 100%-wholey to your financial detriment. For those accustom to "preferential" treatment based upon Caucasian ethnicity, Nicaraguan society (ie. Government, citizens, etcetera) has placed the Caucasian in a social position very similar to the position placed upon Blacks and Latinos in your USA neighborhood / subdivision. Exploitation! )

As "Gringo Bilingual Resident" enjoyed his taxi-ride through Managua, the taxi driver made a phone call to his sweetheart. "Honey, I'm on my home and should be there in about 15-minutes after this passenger departs, " were his words while sitting aside "Gringo Bilingual Resident. " In the front passenger seat "Gringo Bilingual Resident" didn't worry much about the phone call just made by the taxista (taxi driver) due to the taxistas calm demeanor. In route, the taxista picked-up a second fare or passenger who boarded into the backseat.

(Customary procedure is to pick-up multiple passengers heading in the same direction as the first passenger. As many as four (4) different strangers can be in a taxi at any given time. Sharing taxis with whomever the taxi driver deems appropriate is the reality. Taxi fare is charged per person and destination. A "Gringo Tax" is always in effect! )

Nicaraguan streets are lined by potholes, dirt roads, garbage lining the curb, broken street lights, no concern for traffic rules, and full-blown velocity. You will enter, pick-up / drop-off, and leave passengers in some of the worst poverty known to the world. Poverty where children wear no clothing as to save of laundry expenses. Poverty where inmates in the government prison system survive on daily meals valued at US $0. 50 cents! Poverty where jail time is easier than daily survival. Therefore, no criminal or citizen in need of money is concerned with law enforcement. Our concern is daily survival! And your concern as a Gringo-tourist, worse Gringo-sex-tourist, should be returning home to the USA is the mentality. At anytime and with little regard you will enter these neighborhoods of poverty, aka Nicaragua.

Taxista had his second fare sitting in the backseat. Within minutes of boarding, the second passenger, who sat behind the driver, pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the "Gringo Bilingual Resident's" head. "Dame los reales puto" (Give me the money b*tch / fag) was stated. The taxista calmly rested his hands upon the steering the wheel as to not provoke the ladrone (thief.) At the instruction of the ladron, the taxista leaned over the "Gringo Bilingual Resident" and reclined his passenger's seat so it was resting in the backseat area. Ladrone's body sat next to "Gringo Bilingual Resident's" head and upper torso. Still at the instruction of the ladrone, the taxista removed the possessions from the "Gringo Bilingual Resident's" bolsillos (pockets.)

Tag Hauer watch, leather wallet, Motorolla Razor cellphone, wedding ring band, currency in US dollars and Nicaraguan Cordoba, credit cards, one of which was a Visa Gold, leather belt, cedula (identication, ) and shopping bags from his purchases at the Gallery Mall were acquired and presented to the ladrone. For this to be achieved and the ladrone to remain in control of the gun and situation he instructed the taxista to remove the above items and show him by placing the items upon "Gringo Bilingual Resident's" thighs.

This robbery occurred on a major thoroughfare (Carrertera Masaya.)

Viewing the Visa Gold card gave greed to the ladron. He demanded the PIN number be revealed for ATM access. The "Gringo Bilingual Resident" refused. "Gringo Bilingual Resident" was playing with his life. His pride had temporarily over-powered his sensibility. He soon came around and revealed the PIN number.

The ladron was working in tandem with a partner who he called on his cellphone, not the stolen one, to meet him at the armed robbery site and pick-up the Visa Gold card and PIN number. "Gringo Bilingual Resident" was instructed not to lie about the PIN number since the second (2) ladron was riding his motorcycle to the ATM. At the cajero (ATM) everything checked-out and US $500 was dispersed. Second ladron returned the phone call with confirmation. Second ladron returned to the armed robbery site to pick-up the first (1) ladron. With loot and newly purchased "Gringo Bilingual Resident" possessions in hand the two departed via motorcycle.

Scared and affraid, "Gringo Bilingual Resident" instructed the taxista to continue taking him to his home / destination. The two talked about the events that had just transpired. Neither person blamed the other for the robbery, but were glad nobody became injured. At the "Gringo Bilingual Resident's" home, the taxista reminded him that the ladrones had his cedula containing his home address and that it wouldn't be wise to inform the police. (As stated earlier, police in Nicaragua do, but don't exist! )

Question: Did the taxista set-up the robbery when he placed the phone call, picked-up the armed bandit, relieved the "Gringo Bilingual Resident" of his possessions, and reminded him that the thieves knew his home address and that he was married?

In summary, you never know who is driving you or the money they need to survive. You never know who the other passengers are that board taxis with you. You never know who has your "best interest" in mind. All that you do know is as a visible target with the image of wealth, it's just a matter of time before crime meets you face-to-face.

Safety Precautions, if any: Memorize the taxi number on the car doors, if any, before entering. Memorize the identification number of the driver's identification listed on the winshield, if any. Since car doors do not open from the inside, you're essentially locked-in unless you open the door from the outside. Age of the taxista is of not a factor. Appearance of the taxi is not a factor.

    Be there in Nov

Yes she is a very sweet girl, couldn’t ask for a better GFE. Will be back in November for sure. Spirit airline has some great deal still, was thinking about end of Sept. , too much going on. Drove out West to Montana couple weeks ago, one of my ex girlfriends wanted to come home to her family here in Atlanta. Had too much stuff to take a plane, so took my truck out there, told her to pay for the gas ($1100, man oh man) and I would leave the next day. Went through Mount Rushmore and Sturgis on the way, bikers where all coming home from the party there. Great Falls, Montana is a great city. Took a day to see Yellowstone and Teton National Park, was there in my teens. , A bull bison only 3 feet from my window with the herd of 50 grazing right by. Elks right at the park headquarters, a wolf only 5 feet from my car and did get a short sight of a Black bear about 100 feet from me going into the woods. Everyone should go there, simply amazing.

Than I have a lady serious about buying my place, so may be North Carolina in the next month or so. Hope you are around in Nov, tell that hot chica I’ll be there for 10 days at least if not more. P.S. Let her know I'm bringing the bigger toy this time, she will get a laugh out of that and turn red in the face. He He He.

    "Meatloaf" Managua mongering guide

Nonetheless, I considered myself adverntureous and not a scary guy so I went to La Cocteleria en Cd. Jardin.

The taxi driver took from MetroCentro Mall to Cd. Jardin. The taxi driver knew the address with confidence so that was good. I departed from the taxi and went to La Cocteleria.

While drinking a beer and viewing the girls everything was okay. The girls look rather basic, but f*ckable since that's what Managua has to offer. Talking to the girls was easy since I speak Spanish, but no Gringos were present and everyone just looks at everyone else. Lots of "mean mugging" made me begin sensing something dangerous was brewing.

Like always, some drunks started talking drunk. The "mean mugging" continued. The drunks responded. The girls moved out the way as to not catch an "ass whooping. " I too took caution in case a gun fight started. Fortunately guns were never brandished with the establishment.

It was smart for the drunks to leave the business establishment, but the "mean muggers" has other plans.

Not wanting to be a witness, I left the establishment within seconds of the drunks leaving. When I left the "mean muggers" were still present in the establishment. The remaining portion of this story was captured by the police and media. (Source: http://www.elnuevodiario.com. Ni/sucesos/24245) In the middle of the street it went down: MURDER!

Evidently these two groups had a problem from the week prior and someone chose to resolve it violently. The most sensible of the drunks was stabbed in the heart and neck four (4) times and died instantaneously in the middle-of-the-street with the *****house only feet or meters away.

Obviously, if people are getting murdered at yet another location recommended by Meat Loaf's Mongering Managua Guide, I will stay clear of his "recommendations. " It may be cool, fun, or "safe" for Meat Loaf to visit those places of danger (ie. Polanco, Cd. Jardin, Tio, San Judas, ) but I like clean, safe, and honest mongering.
