Actually many houses in the nicer areas in CD.Jardin have numbers on them, making them different than 99% of all other buildings in Managua. You have to call and get proper directions but the house will have Q19 on it once you find the street.

By way of example, casa Bellmary's has a house number. This won't be a strip mall or shopping center. Who knows maybe Bellmary's uses a different name in the yellow pages and it's the same place. If so it is a gringo rip off joint that charges by your skin color and how far away you live from Managua as I have advised before more than once.

Where is Sol y Luna located?

It is in Bolonia, not on the principal street where you find Mansion Teolinda but down about two (towards the bus terminal) and almost on the other side if by the non other side one means the entrance to Bolonia from the road to Plaza Inter about 1/2 way from Hospital Miltar to the entrance to Plaza Inter/Crowne Plaza.

There are 1,200 taxi cooperativos in Managua clumped into about 20 some-odd larger unions of them so good luck in finding that brand name.

Here's what you have with a taxi - Cooperative name on it, the names run the gamut - religious figures, popes, volcanoes, even the solar eclipse. There are a few that will say independente, and they all have distinctive license plates M plus the 5 digit taxi number which is painted on the body of the taxi several times.

If you leave from the hotel ask the door guard to noticeably write down the number of the cab when you get in which evens the playing field a lot. There is a bigger risk of overcharging than robbery. Always insist on "exclusivo" or they pick up others en route which adds risk and worse, more time.

I still just use a paid driver, if you rent a car they will rent a driver too if you want for around $15 a day more.

I lived for two years in Managua and never once had problems with crime. I spent way more time in the seedier barrios of Managua as all my friends were 25 year-olds, bar tenders, just your normal unemployed barrio-rats, working girls, dancers, and yes …… the true Nicaraguans of the city. I had the most fun of my life living, loving and hanging with the poorest of the poor Nicaraguans. Without exaggeration, 2-3 nights per week I spent in Villa Venezuela (very near the club called Polanco) living and playing with friends from the strip clubs and brothels. Go to the police department in Managua and check what minimal crime statistics they have and you will see that Villa Venezuela is considered one of the two highest crime areas in the city. And I never, not once, had a problem in two years. That is not merely dumb luck, that just shows that Managua is not the hot-bed of crime as being portrayed in this thread.

Now, guys, don’t be absolute morons out there. Be careful, watch your back, and don’t walk down the streets at three in the morning dead drunk and looking to get mugged. Be smart. However, Guatemala City, San Salvador and San José are very, very much more dangerous cities than is Managua.

Managua may be a total dump. But it is a relatively safe, fun adventure.
