On LE Plateau I would suggest to stay near mont-royal street between st-laurent (west) and Christophe-columb (east). It's still in my opinion the best area of Montreal. You will need to be ready to mangle with the locals much more. Not many tourist there. Mont-royal street has many nice restaurants, pubs and bars. My favorites remains Bily Kun and Plan be. These places have been around for more then 20 years. La Distillerie No2, Chez Baptiste, But there are so many others. I usually bar hop. Not too far try to enter Chez Serge to watch a Habs game. It's been 4-5 years but I heard it's still as crazy. 3 times I was there many girl would hop on the bar and show their tits when the Habs scores Never rooted for my home team that much haha Many Airbnb in that area. Now I have read your post again and you may be a bit early to truly benefit from that area. Best are hot spring and summer night when girls walked around with no bra and short skirt grrrr.

Downtown I would highly suggest to move just south and hit griffintown. That area is about half English speaking. Much more then on the Plateau. And you are still close to downtown.
