Planning to head up again in a few months. Just trying to weigh out 5.5 drive vs a little over an hour flight. Although there is still the hassle of arriving at the airport early and always the risk of flight delay. I would hate to schedule with someone and have to cancel because of a delay. I have not seen any fares under $250 either. Kind of leaning towards driving. Also, driving you can make your own schedule and not be on some airport deadline.

Fares for NYC to Montreal don't get much lower for the 324 mile flight. The short haul flights to Canada have always been priced this way from close by American cities whether to Montreal or Toronto. I have to presume the USA And Canada have discouraged discount carriers.

I too have considered flying. I made 2 trips by car this summer (5.5 hour drive each way for me). My 1st trip I crossed at Derby Line VT I-89. I was questioned by Canadian Border Services and then told to pull over and come inside for further questioning. I do have a record (non-violent) and last incident was over 10 years ago. They basically asked me the same exact questions inside and then told me to take a seat. About 30 minutes later they called my name, handed me my passport, and said enjoy your trip. I made a 2nd trip a month later. This time crossed over from NY on I-87. Agent asked me the usual questions and handed me my passport and let me through. I have some experience with both flying and driving. There is always the potential for stupid questions and even more stupid follow-up questions. As you might expect, the auto interrogation is usually more probing. When Montreal is in festival season, the airport border services people can be (not always) more relaxed.
