Boul Saint-Laurent (West of Sherbrooke) is a really cool street to walk down day or night. Schwartz Deli and other food, shops, bar and cafe options are all around. Part of Prince Arthur Street is a pedestrian walk that leads to St. Louis Square. The Square is nice and the area around it is a beautiful, old Montreal neighborhood. On the other side of the square is Rue Saint-Denis, there are also bars and cafe there, but I don't remember it to be as interesting as Saint-Laurent.

If you're a younger guy or you just like looking at young girls, this area is trendy and has its share of young people. This neighborhood is called Le Plateau-Mont Royal.

Hungry is spot on regarding Mont Royal. A really good hiking destination. You pick up the trail near the monument linked to below.

If you access it from the metro (it is a surprisingly long walk from the metro) there is no problem. But if you ask a cab driver to take you to the trailhead, they will not understand. So have them take you to this monument.

I really like the neighborhood around Mont Royal. Pretty good hiking on the circular roads around the park (although not as good as the hike in the park up the mountain to the lookout, though). This neighborhood has a lot of shops and restaurants that aren't as expensive as Old Town.

This is a good place to rent a bike. It is right on the bike paths and they are friendly.

There are several good bike paths. The Isle of Notre Dame give you a lot of wildlife (beavers and black birds with distinctive markings). I always get lost in that park and end up following the signs to the metro. You can take bikes in the metro as long as you go to the first car. The other popular bike route is the Canal Route, which I think allows you access another smaller Island. A thorough exploration of both the main bike paths would take two afternoons, especially if you stop at the Biosphere while in the Isle of Notre Dame.

The St Catherine street (and the two other long streets running parallel to it) is a good urban hike, shopping and food experience. Montreal is a foodie place. I love the Basha Lebanese restaurants, the fish and chips places, and the smoked meat restaurants. There is every restaurant you can imagine and none of them are that crowded. It is starting to get a little bit more commercialized than it once was, but even the local landmarks like Moores Clothiers maintain some local character even after being purchased by a large chain. Plus as you wander around, you will find a lot of things such as A&W Root Beer Restaurants and Oh Henry candy bars that you thought were extinct. Canadians buy the territorial rights to a lot of things you thought were gone forever.

Montreal is not as touristy as Spain, Portugal, Czech Republic, etc, but you can fill up a few days without getting bored, especially if you like hiking and biking the outdoors and some slow-paced wandering around and shopping. It is a lot more touristy than most cities in the USA Northeast.

One thing I like to do is to jog up Mount Royal. This is a great hike and there is a nice observation post up there. Also, you can go to see the cross. The hike up the stairs is a workout in itself.

Go get yourself a Smoke Meat sandwich at Swartz Deli.

They have a really cool Laser show inside the Cathedral of Montreal. It is a 6 $ show and they give you a bit of history of how Montreal was founded in English.

Drive north along the Saint Laurence Seaway and there are all kinds of falls to see and hike to.

I love seeing a girl for an hour or two and killing a bottle of wine and then grabbing something to eat in a bar on Crescent St and then walking up and down St Catherine's and people watch.
