Ever since I joined this forum I have lived in Santo Domingo este. Different apartments but still in Santo Domingo este. Over the years I have read more than one person dog out SDE here in this forum. I laugh then and I laugh now. Even as recently as a couple of years ago a girl that was actual staying in SDE refused to go out with me because I refused to take her across the river to go out. In my opinion, others dislike of SDE is based on perception, not the deep knowledge about the place. I have deep knowledge if SDE and I have watched it change and grow.

It has been stated that Dominicans that live in SDE want to move across the river. It might have been that way in the past but now that is not the case. You see they National (the premium supermarket chain) is coming to SDE. National only places stores in locations where their clientele has money. They have the best quality and selection. And the prices to go with it. But I find their offerings to be a good value. The location of their new store in SDE is within walking distance of 6 new apartment complexes that start at 150,000 USD. That is correct gentlemen. The prices in SDE for real estate are up 30% across the board. I am looking for a house in SDE. I new hardware store (one of the best chains in the Dominican Republic) is coming in. They have broken grown on a new modern medical facility.

I am not going to try to sell anyone on the qualities of SDE (weekend warrior or expat). It was stated "to each their own". But personally if you are looking for quality experiences at good prices without the nose in the air attitudes of the chicas from across the river, don't sleep on SDE brothers. SDE has everything I need not only for basic living but for a good life.

Monthly expenses: I pay 330 USD for rent on a 80 square meter 2 level 3 bedroom /3 bathroom apartment with a private terrace and 24 hour security. 75 for electricity, 75 for cable (service is bad), 16 for bottled water, 30 USD for propane for cooking. For the mathematically inclined among us that is 17 USD / day. Smart fit gym is 19 USD / month. My vehicle is paid for and it should roll with me until my death. That leaves alcohol and my booty bill. Yours would vary depending upon your preferences.

70 a night is 2100/ USD a month. That should rent you a 160 square meter penthouse apartment of the most expensive areas of the city (notice I did not say best) over looking the city. You see, I know what things really cost here in the Dominican Republic and personally I do not find value sitting in traffic for hours so that I can say I live in Piantini. Now if you are riding around in uber all the time, and you are on vacation, you time value is very different than perhaps say mine. For me expensive is not always best.

My point is I am looking at value for me. And knowing what that is for me informs my opinions. I will give you an example of that. I do not go to Boca Chica or Juan Dolio for the beach anymore. If I want to go to the beach I make a road trip to one of my favorite ones and pay for the hotel to stay there. Why do I do that when Boca Chica and Juan Dolio is right down the road. Value. I simply do not like the beach experience at Boca Chica and Juan Dolio. I would rather go to the beach less, save my money and then spend my time enjoying a beach experience that suits me.

The best city living (in my opinion) in the Dominican Republic is in Santiago. Another place that I have spent extensive time staying with friends there (think weeks to a month at a time). And 35000 pesos will get you a two level 160 square meter penthouse there. In the middle of the city no. But in a quiet safe and secure neighborhood, yes.

Funny thing is I don't really live full-time in SDE anymore. I bounce all over the island. I've made investments (think ownership of real property and businesses) in the Dominican Republic. I got to stay on top of them. And some of them I can also spend the night in. So everywhere someone is getting on a plane and coming here to visit, I am driving there.

When I write here it is not to argue with anyone else or to gore their favorite ox. No, my intent is to share useful intelligence that other can use to make good decisions for themselves while having boots on the ground in the Dominican Republic. I like to entertain. And I poke fun at those who come at me wrong. There is so much quality information and enjoy learning and living through the experiences of others.

As I have stated before I write from the perspective of someone who has lived here for years. Even when I travel to other places in the Dominican Republic I am making judgements based the costs that I know exist in other places. I look for value always. Value is getting what I want at price I am willing to pay. If someone is doing the same thing, great. If they like it, I love it.

That is why I appreciate the posts in Grownman's Boom Boom Room. Seems to be less of that battle mentality that pervades the rest of the Dominican Republic Forum.

So I'm on my way to Cali Colombia and I get on the plane. I Put my iPad under my seat. Not under the seat in front of me but the seat I was sitting on.

It's a three hour flight so about two hours into the flight I reached out to my see to get my iPad. It was missing. I did not leave my seat over anywhere and I thought I was crazy.
