However, in all fairness to Paulie, there is a hotel I stay at when I'm in Bogota that has a tank hot water heater that services all the rooms in the hotel and they literally do cut it on and off (to save gas I suppose). Anyways I always have to go down to the reception and ask them to turn on the hot water for me in the mornings if I want to take a shower before like 8 am when they turn it on by default. And usually by 3 pm it's turned off again. Maybe that is where he got the idea of cutting the hot water on and off.

Yea it's an electric shower head that's wired directly into the circuit breaker. It turns on automatically when you open the water valve and it heats up the water within about 5 seconds and I've taken a shower for up to a half hour and it stays hot the whole time. The trick is to only open the water valve just enough to trigger it to turn on and then you get perfect hot water just like in the US. Or if it's hot outside and you want a cooler shower then you open the valve a little bit more and it comes out cooler. My last trip I didn't have it and I was taking cold showers for the whole 3 months, so when I got back in January this was one of the first things I bought LOL.

They're pretty popular. Many of the houses up on the hills are put together using scrap and they aren't properly set up with services. No gas lines, water and electricity are sketchy. They use a propane cylinder to run the stove. It would be difficult to install a water heater because no planning went into building the house. But wiring is easy to run, so showerhead heaters are used.

They wouldn't be so scary if they were wired through GFCIs.

Paulie apparently didn't understand how hot water worked. I'm going from memory here, he said I didn't have the hot water turned on. Hot water isn't a service that can be turned on or off. There's either an installed heater, or there isn't. There wasn't. Fortunately, Colombia has a cheap and easy option for anyone with basic electrical skills, a showerhead heater. Works great, takes 5 minutes to install.

The only person on here that is known to stay in cheap hotels is Paulie. Of course his jealousy rages when he sees that other people are staying in places he could never afford. As to staying at Energy; you shouldn't have any issues. The main problem you will face is that if you are pulling girls form Bello or up North, they may be very late especially if you are pulling them during rush hour when las autopistas are jam packed with traffic.
