One week ago I saw a dermatologist at Bangkok Hospital Pattaya (BHP) for a skin rash. Went home with some medicines, next day the rash was gone, would most certainly have gone away by itself. The price charged was reasonable, something like 1700 thb.

Now today at 3 pm I got a phone call from BHP to remind me of an appointment tomorrow. I had not recollection of any appointment tomorrow and I said so after some talking at cross purposes. One hour after that phone call I got an unanswerable text message saying "Mr. (my name) has an appointment with Dr. (doctor's name) at Dermatology Center on 16/11/18 at 13:00 at Bangkok Hospital Pattaya."

Where I come from after you got dismissed by a doctor for a minor ailment you only came back if explicitely agreed or if the condition didn't improve.

Is it customary for a hospital / doctor to unilaterally decide days later that I should come for a follow-up appointment? The fact that they have been calling me reinforces my suspicion no 2nd appointment was ever agreed on (one never knows with language problems). Otherwise why call me? It was not as though I was having an operation. It was just, at best, a redundant 2nd consultation.

I know we are cash cows. I don't mind being one of sorts. I have good insurance coverage. But this feels eerie.

I have had no serious medical or dental issues so far in Thailand but the few interactions I've had have been tainted by weird little anomalies that do not add up to an encouraging impression.

As long timers know, the hierarchy and nature of Thai society permits status and power to be indicated by a subtle smile and a manner of speaking and choice of language. Thais understand this implicitly, and understand that a simple smiling request is actually a command. Me, I'm an fat old git, but I'm not stupid so I know that what he wants is fine with me. I never have to worry about things.

Honoring a friends request is admirable and totally understandable. I am aware there are some back street spots in the Pratunam area that for whatever nefarious reason owners prefer are kept under the radar and are almost exclusively visited by Thais. Perhaps this explains your friends reluctance.

Actually if you go back almost 20 years when Asian dudes started to appear in Thermae, you would find the origin of the term. The first Asian dudes to appear in Thermae did so in the very early 00's. They were for the most part older Japanese expats and older Japanese guys on golfing holidays. By old, I mean 55 up. At first the gals ignored them, but then a segment started to go with them and within a couple of years the back of Thermae was filled with gals who would only go with these older Japanese guys. Was it money? Of course so. My gang was young, mid 30's, in great shape, spoke Thai, etc, but we weren't about to pay over 1 k for any gal in Thermae. And these older grizzled Japanese guys, almost all of whom smoked like chimneys, were paying more and getting the lookers. Also very quickly the gals who were focused on the Japanese would shun the Farang customers. One friend would take one of the Japanese focused gals on occasion. She would never be seen leaving with him, made him meet her outside. Not only did she not want the Japanese dudes to see her leaving with Hi, she did not want her friends to know she was going with a farang.

I get it, it was an off the cuff comment on how the night finished and to be honest no disrespect intended I couldn't give a rats ass where you went or who you shagged. What interested me was the rationale behind not mentioning where because your buddy wanted it kept under wraps. Something created for one thing can be used with another meaning as an inside joke. We all have to admit, nobody here knows exactly what the girl is thinking. I was given told that in front of another farang from his two working girls after another working girl was done with a barfine. Do I know for sure it wasn't a bunch of BS?
