Biggest screw up with China was not shutting down the wet markets after SARS. Their existence exponentially increased the risk of transmission of virus's from animals to humans. That is unforgivable and they need to accept responsibility.

When the virus was first recognized by a doctor in Wuhan they silenced him. Their explanation was that he was unnecessarily creating panic, I imagine thinking or just hoping he was wrong and it would go away. He was right, they were wrong. They fucked up and it took off.

From there it came down to how different countries dealt with what was a seriously contagious pandemic. Some, New Zealand, South Korea, particularly Taiwan, Germany and Thailand to mention some recognized the danger and took measures to contain it, some didn't until it was too late the UK, and the US being among those that delayed and are now paying a high price in lives lost.

To blame China for how it started and why it wasn't contained is justified. To blame China for the failures of other countries to take it seriously is not justified. These countries had choices and some made the wrong ones.

On the China bashing that's happening at the moment let's be real it's not about the pandemic. It is political particularly where there are pending elections.

Finding an enemy to blame and to fear is tried and tested from the Jews in Hitler's Germany to disease invested hoards of rapist immigrants in Trump's Americas. Sadly it works. Too many want to point the finger for what's wrong rather than look in the mirror.

On China's growing influence, it's real. One can argue the merits of countries accepting their aid but there will be consequences when payment comes due. Sri Lanka found that out.

Trying to find countries in this part of the world to visit which are not in one way or another if not already under this influence are heading that way is going to get harder and harder.

Bangkok's governor this morning said 16 business types must remain closed until June 30 to control COVID-19 infections in the capital.

Gov. Aswin Kwanmuang issued an order that requires 16 places including bars, gaming cafes, playgrounds and boxing stadiums to remain shuttered until June 30 or until "further notice."

Issued under the Emergency Decree, which has been extended until July 1, anyone who violates the order faces up to a year in prison and THB100,000 fine. Venue operators could also face permanent closure.
