IMO, many countries are rethinking their defense policies in the aftermath of Russia's aggression. As part of that process they're making decisions about who their adversaries are likely to be, and with whom they should strengthen or forge new alliances.

With respect to Asia, China has tried hard to project an image of a benign neighbor. They can't be happy that Asian rivals like Japan and South Korea are working together on defense. Even though they name North Korea as the primary reason, China is the obvious elephant in the room.

And China REALLY must be pissed at any suggestion that NATO might rise in prominence in Asia. The blame for that can truly be placed squarely at Russia's feet. Not good for Russia to upset China, their economic lifeline and master.

Fascinating to consider how concerns and precautions resulting from Russia's aggression may have the effect of deterring aggression (by China or Russia) in Asia.

During WW-II, Ukraine experienced higher losses, both military and civilian, than other Soviet Republics in proportion to their respective populations. One obvious reason is because Ukraine's geographic position turned it into a buffer zone (and killing zone) between Germany and Russia.

Without the efforts of millions of Ukrainians who died in WW-II, Russia would have lost. In one of the WWII documentaries there was a comment to the tune that some of the Allied soldiers deployed to Europe did not know what they were fighting for until they saw the concentration camps. Then they realized what they had been fighting against. There always will be the question of how it could have happened and why the highest forces above had not intervened and allowed the Holocaust. I will not argue with those that say that an eventual miracle saved those who were still alive. For me, the answer is the following: it took a heroic action of a soldier to win over evil. Of course! Ukraine is very fortunate that Russia is so impossibly corrupt. Which also tells me that Putin's "impenetrable" bunkers aren't worth shit (who wouldn't have skimmed from the government contract on something that was never supposed to be used anyway?) This is also why MOST Russian nukes ARE shit (but not all 6,000 of them, unfortunately).

However, I doubt Putin knows the extent of the steal. No one would dare upset him.

I agree that no one wants to (voluntarily) be the bearer of bad news. But, once a significant piece of bad news leaks out, or is otherwise discovered, it would be foolish to not order a thorough investigation. And Putin, although evil, is no fool.

One of the keys to Putin's rule is how he actively creates and promotes separate "silos" of power that he can then play against each other and use to investigate each other. The military vs the FSB is the most obvious example, although there are other elements (like the FSO) that are less talked about.

The main point I'm getting at is that any group tasked with getting to the bottom of a nasty procurement scandal doesn't really need to worry about upsetting Putin. That's because a) he ordered the investigation; b) They're throwing others under the bus, while simultaneously elevating their own status, and; c) Putin will be more upset if facts come out later that the investigators should have found and reported.

Of course, whatever comes out of any such situation is likely to be handled outside of the public eye. Think back over the past year about how many surprising "suicides" and "accidents" have taken place. It's impossible to know what the internal motivations were for each death (targeted killing), but that's how such things are usually handled.

But, and this is key, even if Putin knows every detail he really can't do shit about it. The damage has already been done and repairing it, even if no sanctions were in place, would take years. Under current circumstances, there's little hope the problem can be effectively fixed.

Keep things quiet, deal privately with the responsible people, and continue to play the "bluff" card. That's really all Putin can do, IMO. Unfortunately for him, that doesn't work well when your adversaries know exactly what's in your hand.

Germany had already unconditionally surrendered to Allied Forces (sans USSR), first on May 4th (some German forces), and then on May 7th (ALL German forces).

Stalin was pissed and insisted on having his own "signing ceremony" in Berlin, which happened a couple of days later. Which means that all the events of May 9th were purely for show, as the REAL surrender had already taken place. That's why EVERYONE other than Russia celebrates VE-Day on May 8th, the date on which the ACTUAL surrender agreement took official effect.

One victorious day

On this very day, during the (supposedly) most momentous celebration of Soviet military might, all Russia could muster up was a single 80-year old T-34 tank! The entire pathetic parade, if it can even be called that, took only about 10 minutes. Oh, and ZERO aircraft participating in any kind of demonstration or flyover.

How humiliating! Bwa-ha-haa-haaa!
