+1. Last weekend I bought a $2. 50 sausage sizzle off a charity BBQ here. The adult serving me had to wait for the calculator to make change for $20.

I bought some socks but the 3 pack had one pair missing. The teller could not prorata 2/3 of $15 dollars so I had to go back and find a full pack to buy.

And we say Pinas are stoopid. 😁.

We have all heard horror stories of workers being deducted for things beyond their control.

I had a regular whose sister worked in a pharmacy, sis received 3 k for 20 out of 21 days straight 10 to 12 hours a day, she could be deducted if she took too long in the bathroom, if she was more than 15 minutes late was docked a full day, if she missed a day was docked 2 days pay.

One of her coworkers gave an incorrect prescription, it was actually the owner / pharmacist who made the mistake but because he had to pay damages he docked her pay completely for over a year to pay for it because it was "her job to correct his mistakes". She took it because they were in a smaller town and she would never work anywhere in that town again if she had objected.

If you do not have any money or power in this place it can be hell on earth, no wonder that the better looking will cash in on their looks to fuck us for 1 to 3 k a night, that is more than a lot of them can make in a month. At some point food in the belly, for the whole family, trumps any moral reservations they may have about fucking for money.

That is also why I tend to be a little more generous, the extra 500 or 1,000 does not mean that much to me, but has allowed me to have a few pretty good and trainable regulars who come with no muss or fuss or drama.

Another Board member here relayed this story to me over coffee. One of his regulars works at a bookstore. On her shift she is assigned to stock one area, the stationary (pens, pencils, paper, etc.). On her day off, an expensive item went missing (p1500). The girl (who was not there that day), along with several others who were stocking that area that day, and the security guard were collectively docked the pro-rated amounts from their sweldo. You can get in trouble at work even when you aren't there.

Another example and a bigger pesos one.

Cutie I know works in sales. A co worker took PHP50000 from a client as a down payment for an event. She lost it / mislaid it or whatever. Despite being on vacation all 5 sales agents lost PHP10 k from their miserably low salary. The manager did not receive a deduction oddly.

Stupid stuff and typical of some firms sadly.

And this Stupid Shit concept applies elsewhere. A co-worker of mine some years back took the day off for his sister's funeral. He informed management ahead of time. He didn't tell anyone else that his estranged sister had passed away. That morning before work, several of his co-workers decided to prank him, they'd brought some helium balloons that were risque and put them on his desk before the work day began. They also messy'd his work area by messing up his desk and filling his trash can to overflowing. Haha. On organizational bigwig showed up, unannounced, and asked for the nickel tour of the facility. A manager (who was not aware the co-worker was gone to a funeral) showed the bigwig around, and they saw the messy work area. The next day the co-worker returned to work, to be disciplined for the risque balloons. Telling management that he was legitimately at a funeral did not work. He got a (meaningless) letter in his work jacket. Great!

Another girl this week told me she had been working in some kind of low level government job last year but had to quit because the time to first pay day was 3 months after the start date and she could not make it. There are many examples of Phili being taking advantage of by their fellow countrymen. Yes, there are many stories framed to scam but plenty of real abuse to go around too.

Few years ago one of my province regulars got a city hall (or local government building) for a local government biggie. Her job was to greet visitors and direct them to the appropriate office. How do you like it sweetie? "OK. So easy. I come there. I tell people what office to go. Anyone can do this". Nice. A month later: Enjoying the sweldo sweetie? "Not so. 2 months now no pay. They pay with debit card. Must have bank account BDO to deposit the sweldo with the card. Can not get cash with the card. Will quit maybe. Ride 2 jeeps to here and 2 jeeps to home each day, 28 pesos. Five days is p140. I don't have money to continue. Can you help me make BDO account?" Ba-Jesus! She quit shortly after and never received a peso.

You've been fortunate to have a western education, you don't know whether these girls dropped out of school at early age, the consequences of them getting a cash transaction wrong, them being nervous dealing with cash or being nervous dealing with foreigners.

Regardless they are human beings and you are in their country, but it's upto you how you treat people.

I never said anything to her or made and roll eye type of non verbal comment, just here will I openly laugh at her.

Most times the western education is worthless in PH. Creating educated useless idiots.

Most PH workers are still 6 month contracted employees, which means you might encounter a new employee without proper training. Most employers will deduct from the employees salary for any cash shortage. One reason why they will take the time to make sure they have counted right.

The other day I was buying apples and oranges from a makeshift sidewalk vendor. It was staffed by 2 kids age 7 and 9. The fruits are priced by the different sizes. As I was putting apples in the bag the kids were counting out loud the cumulative total. 20-40-60, then I tried to goof them up by taking out an apple and placing oranges in the bag, then I would put in different sizes which were priced differently. They each keep up with total as I was making a game of it. I was impressed as I know educated western college grads wouldn't be able to add and and subtract in their head.

There are times when the foreigners are the dumbest ones.

Was in a store in a Mall and the total was 1,390. SNIP Finally the half watt light bulb turns on, "I received exact amount, Po". Took about 5 minutes in total to arrive at that conclusion.

Similar. Cebu McDonalds, Bohol St, next door to the PUV Ayala terminal. 6 am. Looking over the menu above, I asked for the chicken ala king breakfast. The menu showed two prices: p115 for the base foods of chicken, rice, egg (and its picture). Just next to that was a small picture showing inclusion of coffee and hash brown for p130. When I ordered I mentioned the coffee and hash brown. Girl: "Huh?" I pointed to the pic above her head. "Oh. Ok. Any additional sir?" No. "I repeat your order. One Chicken ala King meal with hash brown and coffee". Yes, just like that. I pointed to the menu, and she looked again at the menu. "Total 145 sir". Without thinking (the price was different), I handed her p150 and she gave back p5). When I received the food on a tray a minute later from a different clerk, I realized the price difference. I asked the second clerk: Is this meal the same meal as pictured on that menu? "Yes sir". Cost for this meal? "130 pesos sir". I showed her the receipt of p145. "Yes sir, because you receiving a large coffee". The original girl had not attempted a coffee up-sell. To be fair to any customer, the picture on the menu showing the hash brown and coffee is very small, you would have no idea if that is a regular or large coffee. The first girl heard us talking and walked over. No, ladies I did not order a large coffee. I pointed directly at the menu, twice, that is what I ordered. "Oh yes. I see sir. Sorry po". I asked the first girl if I had asked for a large coffee: "No". Simple mistake on her part, which I can understand. I assumed the girls would do something to remedy the situation, as in offering the p15 differential back, or replace the large coffee with a regular coffee and refund the p15. Nothing. A stare-off. Finally the second girl said again: "Sorry again po". It can be disheartening. I'd like to blame this on cultural difference, but I have seen locals have the same problem over the years of the order being mis-handled or mis-interpreted at the cashier. Have rarely seen this kind of problem in other countries (only on odd or unusually large orders). The entire idea behind giving certain popular meals a picture (and / or a designation such as meal #1, #2, or S1, or Y2) is that there does not need to be discussion of the included items in the meal (drink choice possibly). You receive the pictured meal unless the customer customizes the order differently. To be able to point to the meal requested should take all guess-work from the system.

Everything is relative Kabul Guy. Was she attractive? If she was attractive then her low wattage light bulb slowly turning on was charming. If she was unattractive then it was all a pain in the ass. I am assuming she was not very attractive. To avoid these waste of time transactions I always use a credit card to make similar purchases whenever possible. Young people from most countries, including my own, have a hard time with counting and arithmetic. You are definitely "old school" to expect any different. Ha Ha. They also have trouble with reading and writing longhand (cursive).

She was a fugly so it was a PITA.
