Uber's offices HAVE been raided in the past by authorities. They now have three small offices around town, and only qualified drivers and staff know where they are.

Uber, despite being illegal, also pays all payroll taxes and VAT to the government. This may sound crazy, but it works in this environment, because the tax authorities leave them alone, since they are getting their cut. This has the net effect of the government's left hand not knowing what it's right hand are doing.

You're looking at things through a gringo lens, but this system isn't run the same. You're not in Kansas anymore.

So, you actually believe her when she said Uber is operating illegally, knowingly defying a court order to cease operations? LOL! LOL! LOL!

Let me say this again: Uber has never, ever, picked up one single passenger, anywhere in the world, while under a court order to cease operations. Never! Not one vehicle has ever been impounded for the sole reason of being a Uber. NEVER! You got be a sucker with zero understanding of the legal / business world to even consider that a remote possibility. Some dumbass Uber driver tells you that the ride you are about to be taken on is illegal? Like they're some underground renegade that's saving the city by offering low-priced rides defying the unjust police and government? Like they're some sort of James Bond hero? And you actually believed them? I can't stop laughing!

For the purposes of this argument, when I refer to Uber operating "illegally" I mean that they are continuing to pick up passengers despite the existence of a valid court order to cease operations.

Can you explain how Uber can continue operating under these circumstances after a court of law suspends / revokes Uber's business license:

1. Any government can shut down access to Uber with a flip of a switch. If Uber is figuratively telling the government "fuck you" and continues to pick up passengers illegally, why doesn't the government shut off Internet access to Uber?

2. How does Uber's corporate offices not get raided, computers, servers, records, files, etc seized? Does Uber have a well armed, nuclear-capable militia army standing guard over its offices that is feared by the Colombia's own military?

3. How does Uber's driver support offices not get raided?

4. How are Uber executives not issued arrest warrants and imprisoned for defying court orders?

5. How does Uber continue to process credit card payments? If Uber is illegal, then of course all Colombian banks would be issued notices to cease transactions with Uber and freeze its assets.

6. How does Uber continue to pay / collect from their drivers when no bank will do business with them and all their assets are frozen?

7. How does Uber continue to employ Colombian locals for their support staff when it is deemed as operating illegally? How is payroll processed with no bank account?

8. Uber employs a team of legal experts who's only job is to maintain compliance with government policies, correct? Then why have a legal team when you don't give a fuck anyway and continue to operate despite a court order not to do so?

Uber is not some street corner operation selling illegally imported cigarettes that can continue to operate enough though a court ordered it to shut down. Just pack up real quick when the cops are spotted a couple blocks away. Uber is a multi billion dollar corporation. No way in hell they can operate underground. You think the Colombian government won't notice Uber picking up 20 million passenger a month? Uber can just shut off the lights when they see the cops coming down the road? LOL! Seriously, anyone that considers even for one second that it's possible Uber is operating illegally underground is a sucker with no understanding of the business / legal world. I did not know Uber was still illegal in Colombia. I am with a non-pro in Bogota now. She owns a salon, sells food, and drives Uber and Didi. She said it is still illegal. The police took her car two times. The first time they kept it 5 days and she had to pay 560,000. The second time they kept it 20 days and she had to pay 1 million. We are waiting at a traffic light and a crazy mf just walked around the car hitting all the tires with a stick.

But I decided to post a TR because I want to keep even the dumbest mongers safe from harm. My first 5 nights in Colombia, I was victim of attempted robbery 3 times. Twice in Cartagena (read my TR there) and once here in Bogota.

I am on the way to the airport in Barranquilla headed back to Bogota. I will be staying a few blocks from Santa Fe. If you could, take a trip over there with me tonight. I need some exciting stories like this to tell, because all of my times there have been pretty routine without any drama.

If they refuse or pretend like they don't understand, point to the curb and ask to be let out. Don't underestimate the willingness of some Colombians to use the language barrier to their advantage, and pretend not to understand when they do perfectly well. But that's assuming Elvira has spent any time in Colombia besides a few weekend warrior excursions.

In the 2 1/2 years I've lived in Medellin (nor in the 5 times I visited over the years), I have had NO experiences of a cab driver trying to rip me off. Perhaps I speak Spanish well enough that cabbies assume I've been here enough times to know what the fare should be. Maybe I just don't look like a foolish foreigner that doesn't know any better.

I left Bogota yesterday and used an uber from Santa Fe to the airport. When we got close to the airport, the driver (Venezuelan chap) explained that he may have to take a different route than expected because there are often police waiting on the way, to stop uber drivers and shake them down for big payments.

He seemed genuinely concerned, and at one point even pointed out a few policemen standing around a stopped car, talking to the driver.

I'm not sure what the consequences would be for the passenger (very little I would imagine), but if the police were to stop an uber and the passenger, then I can see them purposely taking their time talking to the driver with the possibility that the passenger would be in danger of missing their flight.

And in addition, when we got to the airport, the driver told me that he will just stop the car in the middle of the road, and that I should just get my suitcase and get out very quickly. Rapido! Rapido!

Maybe he was being a bit paranoid, but I can see how he didn't want any trouble with the police or the taxi mafia.

Next time, I'll just take a yellow cab.

I have had this happen leaving the BOG airport. The uber picked us up in the parking lot. Of course he has once of us sit up front to look like we were friends. About five minutes into the ride we were pulled over. The driver was like quick "My name is XXX what's your names?" It didn't work. The cops just explained to us that uber was illegal and called us a yellow cab. I don't know what happened to the driver but it seemed like he was getting more than just a citation.

This also happened to be in Peru. I think this guy was operating an illegal taxi. This time he got pulled over and told us to wait on a corner. We did and watched the cops ticket him. After they left he came and picked us back up. My buddy felt bad for the old man and gave him $50 usd.

I had an MDE cabbie switch bills on me, telling me the 10 k I gave him was fake, when I had just gotten it from a cajero and plus the one he switched back was ripped and the one I gave him was not. I think the fare was about 6 k so I told him 'ya tienes el tuyo why más' and went in my building. He called the fucking police. I had a couple of other problems as well. So Elvis is a fat, bloated enema bag but I agree that MDE cabbies are a bunch of hijos de putas.
