Ecause I got sick of arguing with posters who have shit for brains who believe impossible shit like Uber is illegal in Colombia (read more on Stupid Shit Medellin subforum)

Sorry pimp. But I posted about this last year. Here is a copy. Better to get to know the ins and outs of places before you go making assumptions based on where you come from.

I did not know Uber was still illegal in Colombia. I am with a non-pro in Bogota now. She owns a salon, sells food, and drives Uber and Didi. She said it is still illegal. The police took her car two times. The first time they kept it 5 days and she had to pay 560,000. The second time they kept it 20 days and she had to pay 1 million. We are waiting at a traffic light and a crazy mf just walked around the car hitting all the tires with a stick.

But I decided to post a TR because I want to keep even the dumbest mongers safe from harm. My first 5 nights in Colombia, I was victim of attempted robbery 3 times. Twice in Cartagena (read my TR there) and once here in Bogota.

Attempted robbery 3 times in 1 trip? Maybe it is you. I have never had anyone attempt to rob me and I am an obvious foreigner as well. I am on the way to the airport in Barranquilla headed back to Bogota. I will be staying a few blocks from Santa Fe. If you could, take a trip over there with me tonight. I would like you to point out what these hardened violent criminals look like and show me how it is so easy for you to find trouble. I need some exciting stories like this to tell, because all of my times there have been pretty routine without any drama.

Bogota is OK compared to the US but compared to Asia it is pretty much a joke. If you don't know this you need to check out more places in Asia!

If they refuse or pretend like they don't understand, point to the curb and ask to be let out. Don't underestimate the willingness of some Colombians to use the language barrier to their advantage, and pretend not to understand when they do perfectly well. But that's assuming Elvira has spent any time in Colombia besides a few weekend warrior excursions.

In the 2 1/2 years I've lived in Medellin (nor in the 5 times I visited over the years), I have had NO experiences of a cab driver trying to rip me off. Perhaps I speak Spanish well enough that cabbies assume I've been here enough times to know what the fare should be. Maybe I just don't look like a foolish foreigner that doesn't know any better.

I left Bogota yesterday and used an uber from Santa Fe to the airport. When we got close to the airport, the driver (Venezuelan chap) explained that he may have to take a different route than expected because there are often police waiting on the way, to stop uber drivers and shake them down for big payments.

He seemed genuinely concerned, and at one point even pointed out a few policemen standing around a stopped car, talking to the driver.

I'm not sure what the consequences would be for the passenger (very little I would imagine), but if the police were to stop an uber and the passenger, then I can see them purposely taking their time talking to the driver with the possibility that the passenger would be in danger of missing their flight.

And in addition, when we got to the airport, the driver told me that he will just stop the car in the middle of the road, and that I should just get my suitcase and get out very quickly. Rapido! Rapido!

Maybe he was being a bit paranoid, but I can see how he didn't want any trouble with the police or the taxi mafia.

Next time, I'll just take a yellow cab.

I have had this happen leaving the BOG airport. The uber picked us up in the parking lot. Of course he has once of us sit up front to look like we were friends. About five minutes into the ride we were pulled over. The driver was like quick "My name is XXX what's your names?" It didn't work. The cops just explained to us that uber was illegal and called us a yellow cab. I don't know what happened to the driver but it seemed like he was getting more than just a citation.

This also happened to be in Peru. I think this guy was operating an illegal taxi. This time he got pulled over and told us to wait on a corner. We did and watched the cops ticket him. After they left he came and picked us back up. My buddy felt bad for the old man and gave him $50 usd.
