The client state is stuck with a huge debt it can't service, and China takes over the port as a base because its loans are not getting paid. The client state's economy collapses, and its currency worthless.

The Lankan currency was worth 100 to the dollar, now it is 350 thanks to CCP's machinations; it used to be a large rice producer, now importing rice. People are starving and rioting in the streets. All of these are facts, easily verifiable with simple Google searches.

During the Cold War, USA did not tolerate USSR military build-up in Cuba or even clandestine USSR influence in Granada. So Australia and its senior partner's behavior are in line with great power politics. But as you said, fortunately it is still all talk. I do not envision Australia launching a "special military operation" against Solomon Islands anytime soon.

I also do not see the good and evil side. Most nations do a lot of shitty things although I think Western EU nations these days do a little less evil.

All your points are fair but I think my original point was that when it comes to positioning for power, western nations do not directly militarily engage with other strong powers. They do so through cultural and economic influence and Russia's methods of addressing their security concerns is like that of a sore loser who flips the game board when he's losing.
