Just looking at USA's confirmed cases, we now know that we are probably at the low end of that estimate (perhaps even lower). USA has over 21 million confirmed cases with a population of 328 million. If the number of actual infections was say eight times the number of confirmed cases, USA would be at 170 million actual infections. That would be 52 percent of the population, which would be approaching theoretical herd immunity. But the number of confirmed new daily cases does not seem to be dropping in USA, which would suggest that USA is not yet approaching herd immunity. Czech Rep has an even higher confirmed cases per capita, and their new daily cases also do not seem to be dropping yet.
