Because it is different in the US. In much of the world race issues are overt. In the US, it is much more clandestine and subtle. It is not like in the news where they suggest that black people are being killed in large numbers every day in the streets. The race issues comes from the fact that many Americans are not able to understand diversity of culture as well as the more culturally diverse Europe. Asia would be worse if it had more diversity in each country, but I can't think of an Asian country that faces the same diversity issues as a Western country.

Anyway, to me, Cane's post was more a critique on Colombian perceptions than American. The woman wanted to be perceived as white because her culture has taught her that fair skin was superior. That has nothing to do with America but Colombia's own endemic perception. Heck, Japan and other countries have the same problems. The Japanese are very critical of darker skin Asians such as those from SE Asia and the Pacific Islands. Hell Japanese and rich Chinese are some of the most racist people in the world. Indigenous Americans' problems are far too removed from society's concern. Most native Americans live on their own reservations without much integration into mainstream society. That is one reason why you do not hear about them.
