A few months ago I reported here on my experiences in the Zona Centro area of Guadalajara from a low budget perspective. Two weeks ago I returned from a second trip and have some updates.

Several other contributors here have commented on the price versus quality of the accommodations at the Hotel Portobello, located very near to the Juarez subway station. It was my home for 16 nights, and I wholeheartedly recommend this hotel. For $28 (USA) per night it was the greatest hotel bargain I've ever had. My only squawks are that the water pressure in the shower was less than optimal and the room had no refrigerator. Otherwise, the room had a great air conditioning system, nice beddings and towels, plenty of electrical outlets, and was spotlessly cleaned each day. I'd gladly stay there again.

When I use a Mexican ATM, I hate receiving 500 and 1000 peso bills as they're hard to use as many establishments are reluctant to accept them. My favorite ATMs are located inside the numerous Coppel retail stores scattered around the city. Transaction surcharge is only 18 pesos, and requests for less than 1000 pesos are paid out in convenient to use denominations of 50's, 100's, and 200's. Each day I'd withdraw 950 pesos as spending money and the machine would spit out one 50, three 100's, and three 200's. Perfect denominations to use at my favorite day drinking bars.

I'm a late afternoon-early evening drinker who hits the bars at around 5 to 7 pm. I'd pick a hostess (fichera) to sit with me and buy 4-5 rounds of beers for she and I, then afterward I'd head to the streetwalker area around Calle Independencia (west of Calzada Independencia Norte) to get the horniness out of my system. To get home, I'd ride the metro bus to the San Juan de Dios subway station, then ride westward for two stops to the Juarez Station, with a very short walk to the hotel. The subway service ends at around 11 pm, so I never had a problem getting home. Pretty easy to do, even for a slightly tipsy traveler.

NOTE: When drinking in Asian capitals like Hong Kong, Bangkok, Jakarta, and Manila, I always ride a taxi at the end of the night as I feel safe doing so there. But I've heard plenty of cautionary stories from the bar girls about hailing random cabs in GDL, so I just got into the habit of riding public transport.

Fichera ladies drinks normally cost 80 pesos ($4 USA) each, with my beers costing around 25 pesos each. Price for the streetwalker and short time hotel was normally 370 pesos. So I ended up spending around $25-30 USA In the bars and $20 for a streetwalker.

The hostess girls normally arrive at between 2-3 pm. The girls are a lot less inhibited and a whole hell of a lot more fun after they've had a few beers, so my routine was arrive in the middle of their shifts after the day drinking customers have gotten them liquored up.

Two of my favorite haunts are located next to each other directly south of Parque Morelos. They are the LOS Altos bar (Aguafria 148, Zona Centro) and Las Tejas bar (Juan Manuel 23, Zona Centro).

The LOS Altos is a hopping and happening place on weekend nights, as all the tables are consistently filled and there are usually around 8-10 girls working the customers. On one Saturday night, the waitress seated me at a table which I shared with a guy and his smoking hot hostess, and thankfully both ignored me.

Two of my regulars stopped by on their way to the toilet to greet me with cheek kisses and the manager recognized me and came over to check on me. Eventually a drunk gal named Wendy sat with me. Its address is Calzada Revoluciand 26, Analco, Guadalajara, a white and blue building with a couple of large Corona beer advertisements painted on the walls. The bar area is located on the second floor.

This is a fun bar with 3-4 hostesses and a quite entertaining waitress and female bartender. I visited this place 5 times and always had a fun experience. I would normally sit with whatever hostess was unoccupied, so the first 3 nights I sat with 3 different ladies. On the 4th night, I had to choose between two of them, and I selected the prettiest and most vivacious one. I could tell the other gal was a bit miffed and jealous, but as I passed by her table on the way to the toilet, I put 50 pesos in her hand and said, "we will meet next time, senora", which made her smile.

I sampled 8 streetwalkers in Zona Centro, and the routine is rather routine. You select the gal, negotiate a price (200-350 pesos), and inquire if "mamada" (BJ) is included. It's a short walk to the short time hotel, where you plunk 70 pesos on the counter and receive a room key and condom. I always brought my own because cheap Mexican condoms are thick like bicycle innertubes. Private casas are similar in nature to Estetica Masculinas except that they are cheaper and located in residential neighborhoods in apartments. They do not have a sign with the name of the casa and you would need to get their address to find them. They are illegal operations and do not have any government license to operate.

They are geared to the locals and advertise on local sex classified websites or on Twitter.

Casas have mostly older and thicker girls but you will find a slimmer girl or a younger girl here and there. The standard price is 250 to 350 for half an hour, 500-550 pesos for the hour.

Address is Gomez Farias 1144. Promos at 250 for the half hour and 400 for the hour. Regular prices are 300 and 500 with 250 for 20 minutes. Standard casa. Neither better or worse.

That casa is very far away. There are many casas right in the heart of GDL that only charge 300-350 pesos for half an hour.

Nothing special about this casa except they offer a 250 half hour promo from 10 to 1 pm from time to time. Not everyday but it rolls out on a regular basis. The regular price is 350 for half an hour and 600 for the hour.

Yes. Exit the airport "security area" and turn left all the way to the opposite wall, the east side.

Always decline the conversion rate offered by the bank's ATMs when asked. It is a scam. Decline the conversion rate when asked and you will still get your money but at the better financial service's (VISA / MasterCard) rate. Do this in GDL or anyplace in Mexico. I suppose the same scam extends to other countries as well.

As for casas de cambio, there is a better rate than at the airport at the exchange houses on Lopez Cotillo, a couple of blocks south of the Centro Historico. You get a better rate for $100 dollar bills. All the places along the street display the same rate on their sign. Some will give you a little better tipo de cambio if you ask. In Mexico City the opposite is true, there is a better rate at the airport than can be found in the rest of the city.

Many thanks Juan, that will save me some money. I guess I wasn't paying attention to the wording on the screens as I didn't know you could decline the bank's rate. Up until a few years ago I don't believe this was an issue, or at least I wouldn't see anything indicating the Mexican bank was going to take 5% or 6%, and when I looked at my bank statements the forex rates weren't that bad.
