A couple more questions for the BT vets. I've only been down there a few times on a Friday or Saturday night. How are things the other days of the week? If I have other days off (like around Memorial Day or July 4th) is it worth a trip down on a Thursday or Sunday night? Would it be pretty dead concerning selection? Or are all the same chicas still there with better availability?

Anyone know a tiny little skinny chick named Pearla that works in NLBT? Where do you get the paperwork at before hand? Last time I went through I had the paper work but not the paid stamp because the bank at the border was closed. I didn't get it paid in Monterrey and on the return trip at the 20 mile checkpoint I got yanked off the bus and had to "pay" the gentleman in his office. Laid the money in a drawer where he put my passport and walked out. I thought the Federals were more honest than that.

I have seen the worst drivers leaving boys town. Running red lights, all over the road and most were drunk. I even got hit in the back by a drunk once in a taxi in boys town. The taxi driver got out and talked to the driver and came back complaining about him being drunk. Don't like the bribed cops but getting killed by a drunk is worse. Now I must get off my high horse and return to land of easy women and cheap beer.

You won't get any argument out of me on that response! My point regarding the apparent DUI checkpoint was directed more towards the innocent gringo who may not be drunk and who is simply trying to get safely to his hotel to cap off a good night. The closer you get to the NLBT gates, the more likely you are to run into rateros (crooked police) who may simply be looking for a shakedown.

Does anyone know if you can get a bus out of NL around midnight? Travel plans put me there between 10pm to 12pm and the bus websites say they stop around 10. Which is weird considering that starting at 4 in the morning they run every 20 minutes.

Also, what is the name of the new bus station on ave. Lopez de Laura, the main road to the original bus station? And what lines run out of there?

Sorry, but my mind is running a blank regarding the names, but I believe there are actually two bus stations on Lopez de Laura. Hopefully I can still be of some help.

You did not mention where you want to go on this late night bus run. Since most any bus traveling south out of NL is going to hit Monterrey, I'll assume you want to go in that direction. Grupo Senda has buses running every hour after midnight - http://portal.gruposenda.com/Senda/jsp/

Secondly, don't rely too much on what you see on many Mexican bus company websites. Their data is often outdated or incomplete. For example, the last several bus lines we took from NL to Monterrey didn't even indicate that they provided the service on their websites.

Also, don't forget your Mexican tourist pass. I don't think the Mexican immigration office at bridge 1 is open late night. So, if you can't get the paperwork completed and paid for before you hit the bridge, it's really a crap shoot as to if you will make it past the 20 mile check point without it when attempting to travel inland. I was pulled off the bus the one time I avoided getting it. Luckily I was able to pay quickly on the spot while the bus load of people waited.

I agree. After swearing off of BT, I could not resist and found ways to work around the police at the entrance. First approach, park at the nearby gas station and walk in. More recent and second approach, stay at Colon Plaza (less than $50 for a posh room), take a taxi (approximately 40 pesos due to the close proximity to BT) to the gas station and walk in. My first stay at the hotel I walked to BT and took the taxi back. The BT cops never bother me when I walk into BT.

As for the exchange rate, I pay and speak only in pesos and assume a 10 to 1 rate. So, when a young 20 year old door girl wanted 1200 pesos for condomless full service, I saw her hot body and accepted. At a 13.5 rate at the time was approximately $89 to get me some fresh young meat. Since then, I have taken advantage of the lack of customers to get her down to 700 pesos which is closer to $52. When leaving Boystown, I would always turn left when leaving the entrance vs. Turning right to go down Anahuac, which seemed to greatly reduce the probability that I would get pulled over. However, these days, it just is not worth the risk.

Using this past Friday night as an example, I was out with another gringo friend who also has a house in NL. We taxied to and from BT. When the taxi got to the corner of Anahuac at Cesar Lopez de Lara when we were leaving, there were two cop cars with four private vehicles that appeared to be sorting things out after a small accident. Then, immediately after the taxi turned right towards the City Express Hotel there was a lineup up of six to eight cop cars backed up against the building with multiple private cars pulled over getting tickets. I assume this checking for DUI. Not a good thing and not worth the BS, even if you do not drink.

It's been a long time since I've been to BT, around 5 years since I last went. From reading the board it looks like things have changed a lot. I've been to BT about 10 times and across the border at least 20 times, but that was all more than 5 years ago. I always drove my own vehicle into Mexico and was never even stopped when driving in. I also always used to just drive into BT and just pay a guy a couple dollars to keep an eye on my car and then a couple more dollars when I was ready to leave. I was never stopped when entering BT and never was stopped for any kind of pat down either.

The only encounter with the policia was when I got turned around and got caught on a one way street going the wrong way, but $10 took care of that.

It sounds like I'm going to have to change what I've done before. Thinking that the next time I go, sometime this summer, I'll see about meeting up with some other guys wanting to visit and possible split some of the expenses. Sounds like it would be safer in numbers as there would be more eyes watching.

Then a Mexican guy came up to me and said "Taxi?" I said "Si" and walked over. Incredibly, this Mexican dude thought that I (a gringo with light hair) was the driver of the taxi! Yeah, everyone thinks I'm a taxi driver in NL!! We all had a good laugh about that one!
