Ley Seca will be enforced in Nuevo Laredo this weekend because of the elections. That means no alcohol is supposed to be sold from Friday June 4 at midnight till Sunday June 6 at midnight. Don't know if all the bars are going to observe this or not.

Yes, bars will observe the law, or risk being closed with a large fine to pay in order to re-open. Applies even to NLBT.

You get the visa (FMM) at Bridge 2; it's a short walk from Bridge 1, or if you are in a hurry, just take a cab.

I arrived in Nuevo Laredo Saturday. Decided to drive and leave my car at the border. Crossed the border. Asked for a visa. I was directed to a building next door. Walked around the building. No one could help me. Then one gentleman told me I needed to get a taxi and pointed some where out side the building. Gave up and just crossed into mexico. Got a taxi to the bus station. Partying in Monterrey then came back and crossed back into the US today.

Yep, I was coming back from MTY. There was definitely damage. Things should be pretty much back to normal now. They were without power for a day or 2.

Update, some areas are now on their 6th day without power. Including homes and businesses, and about 1/3 of Boystown.

Conflicting reports that tornados touched down ravaging both sides. Some parts of NL without power and water. NL airport suffered structural damages. Texas side water supply effected some neighborhoods under a boil notice. Not sure what's true and if it's blown thru or will take days / weeks to get night scene straightened out.

All true, except was not tornado, just very strong winds, some as high as 90 MPH. Some people that lived in older wooden structures had their homes completely destroyed. The electric company reports 81% of city has power restored, and I know people without power and they just Thursday got water back. It is far from returning to normal, city is littered with trash and tree limbs, some very large power poles are still down. The electric company has crews from several nearby cities, including Monterrey, here to help. Bottled water is scarce to non existent, a friend tried to buy a generator in Laredo for his house in Nuevo Laredo, none were available. Even areas with power restored are experiencing power outages as they reroute and reconnect power lines that were damaged and temporarily repaired. Back to normal? Not hardly.

Crossed last night on the way to MTY. The last 3-4 times I have my paperwork has not been checked at the Checkpoint, but again they had another bus pulled over. So you need your visa if traveling to MTY.

I posted this in the Tijuana forum but it applies to all of Mexico. Bbond, I would love to hear your opinion on this.

This is something I have pondered for a decade and a half. I still have no concrete answer to solving it that I am willing to stand on. The issue is it is systemic, in not only the leaders of the government, but has filtered down to the every day employee (as I paraphrase Travv quoting Dugan Flanakin). My only idea to repairing it, there ain't no fixing it, is to go back to the earlier days when both sides had a "kinder, gentler, machine gun hand".

Ideas, suggestions, or a well thought out thesis would be wonderful. Ain't none of us going to be right, correct, or even know, until time plays it out. I guess I'm just wanting to know what your best thoughts on your best bet.

I don't think is something that can be solved. They are just going to have to grow out of it, very gradually. I know few people here that are, as far as I have seen, very honest and straight, would not steal a dime or take something that wasn't theirs.

I know many others that will take advantage of every opportunity presented them, and take what they can. But that is everywhere, not just Mexico. Mexico where law enforcement uses their authority to steal, I have even seen video of firemen and police ransacking cars after a fire or a crash and taking what they can. Corruption is so deep and wide spread, people have come to expect it. Over time, with increasing wages and living conditions that will improve, but it's going to take a very long time. It's so deep and wide spread, it is hard to even believe that a country, next door to the USA, could be so dirty.
