once in my car, for running a stop sign, right in front of a transito, and causing another car to brake hard to avoid hitting me, us$20.
i guess you could say all the traffic stuff was somewhat justified, except he no helmet thing, helmets are required but hardly anyone wears one, so the stop for that was a bs, get a gringo, deal. paying small "fines" on the spot cleared me on all of them. .
i paid 100 pesos to a couple bicycle cops once because i was walking a girl to my apartment, i told them we were just walking down to pollo loco to eat. she did not want me to pay them at all, she insisted they take her in, saying she had done nothing wrong, i slipped a 100 peso note to one and told them lunch was on me, they let us go.

Posts: 176@bbond - so with all the fun going on out there, what is your secret to staying out of trouble? others going down occasionally report trouble but i guess you really know your way around when you're going out several times a week unrep001hed.
@chuck 91 -
any details on the occurrence?
when they started the police checks at the gate, i said whoever came up with the idea should be promoted. the reason is because once you got inside now the chance of a police encounter is zero, whereas before they used to constantly patrol the interior and they could shake you down any time when you were just walking around. once you get in now, basically you don't have to worry about it any more. point being that outside the compound (i.e. in downtown, or anywhere) anything can happen anytime.
i haven't mongered in downtown in a year, but when i was spending time there the first half of the year bar-hopping, disco-hopping with an nlbt lady, i had a couple of close calls with them. i always thought that if it ever went down with the downtown cops it would be much worse than bt.
i did get into a trust agreement earlier this year with the boys town cops, but they warned me that they were absolutely powerless and couldn't help me at all if i ever had trouble with any municipal officers outside boys town. don't know how the whole thing is organized, but the bt precinct seems to be separate somehow.

These beatings have changed the patrol strategy of the local police, they travel in groups. Downtown, last 3 nights, very few police were seen.
Maybe things will change for the better, damn sure can't get much worse.

Hope that change happens soon...as we all love NL but can't even think about going these days cuz of these cops. I am usually not too concerned about those gangs but cops shakedown.

I heard rumors, from somewhat reputable sources, that shit is about to hit the fan here. No idea as to when or where, but things are certainly changing.

Posts: 17I did go to downtown NL last Saturday night. I was returning to Montero about 9pm and got stoped on the street by 2 police on bikes. It was a shakdown even worse than the one I got at NLBT 6 months or so ago. Now downtown NL is also on my list of places not to go at least till they fire all of the current police as Calderon has threatend to do.

Santo Domingo is a bad ass, laid back city where the action doesn't stop until well after sun rise and you can get everything from a $10 skank shag to a $300 super model flown in from Brazil. Sosua is much better known as a the monger town tho for those who like to monger on the beach (not me).
Only real downside (for TX residents anyways) is it's a bit of a pain to get to, you have to go through Florida or NY.
#1 though is Angeles City Philippines which is slanty-eyed, mega super sized version of NLBT except about 20x times bigger than NLBT was in the peak, and probably also that much more dirtier and corrupt and sleazier and stinkier, all of the ladies have Mexican sounding names, and one of the true crown jewels on this little planet we live on.
I went to Penthouse maybe about 6 months ago while barhopping with an NLBT lady and didn't get ripped off, but didn't find anything I liked either.

Jesus man, even at regular price, $15 for two drinks, in Nuevo Laredo, is highway robbery. A tourist trap, now confirmed.

As far as going back, I am not sure when will that be as I didn't find that situation very safe. Receptionist in my hotel told me not to go out at nite because of violance and etc.

Thanks for the info. The bars that you all frequent are close enought to the border just in case someone needs to make a run for it, LOL.

Will you be hassled and or robbed by the bastards? Some nights, no, other nights, probably.
When the local "guides" recommend against going there, weigh all that everyone else says, I will not go or recommend anyone else to go.
Then there is the locality issue, that area is almost always a hot zone when shit hits the fan here.
I have more specific reasons, which, unfortunately, must remain unsaid.
