well i am not entirely unrep001hed.

i have been stopped on my motorcycle twice, once for drunk, and hot rodding, city cops, 500 pesos, once for no helmet, transito, 200 pesos.

once in my car, for running a stop sign, right in front of a transito, and causing another car to brake hard to avoid hitting me, us$20.

i guess you could say all the traffic stuff was somewhat justified, except he no helmet thing, helmets are required but hardly anyone wears one, so the stop for that was a bs, get a gringo, deal. paying small "fines" on the spot cleared me on all of them. .

i paid 100 pesos to a couple bicycle cops once because i was walking a girl to my apartment, i told them we were just walking down to pollo loco to eat. she did not want me to pay them at all, she insisted they take her in, saying she had done nothing wrong, i slipped a 100 peso note to one and told them lunch was on me, they let us go.

    @chuck 91 -
    any details on the occurrence?
when they started the police checks at the gate, i said whoever came up with the idea should be promoted. the reason is because once you got inside now the chance of a police encounter is zero, whereas before they used to constantly patrol the interior and they could shake you down any time when you were just walking around. once you get in now, basically you don't have to worry about it any more. point being that outside the compound (i.e. in downtown, or anywhere) anything can happen anytime.

i haven't mongered in downtown in a year, but when i was spending time there the first half of the year bar-hopping, disco-hopping with an nlbt lady, i had a couple of close calls with them. i always thought that if it ever went down with the downtown cops it would be much worse than bt.

i did get into a trust agreement earlier this year with the boys town cops, but they warned me that they were absolutely powerless and couldn't help me at all if i ever had trouble with any municipal officers outside boys town. don't know how the whole thing is organized, but the bt precinct seems to be separate somehow.

Any chance the change could be for the better? P

Was it the military who beat up the local police. I have heard that has happened recently and there was some speculation it is because the NL police are so corrupt. However I wonder if the military is any less corrupt. To me the border towns including NL ( with the possible exceptoin of TJ)are just to violent to visit right now. The cartels appear to be in charge and even if I am careful I am afraid I might just be in the wrong place at the wrong time. This is very sad to me as I really like Mexico and the Mexican people including those in NL and Juarez. Over the past 5 to 6 years I have spent considerable time in both and had a great time and fucked some great ladies.

Wednesday another cop got his ass whipped, pulled from his car on the way to work. He was beaten and 2000 pesos and his watch taken.

These beatings have changed the patrol strategy of the local police, they travel in groups. Downtown, last 3 nights, very few police were seen.

Maybe things will change for the better, damn sure can't get much worse.

High on my list of "recommended places to go now that Mexico Border mongering is dead" (apologies to bbond - who is the only one who still knows how to have a good time there).
Santo Domingo is a bad ass, laid back city where the action doesn't stop until well after sun rise and you can get everything from a $10 skank shag to a $300 super model flown in from Brazil. Sosua is much better known as a the monger town tho for those who like to monger on the beach (not me).
Only real downside (for TX residents anyways) is it's a bit of a pain to get to, you have to go through Florida or NY.

#1 though is Angeles City Philippines which is slanty-eyed, mega super sized version of NLBT except about 20x times bigger than NLBT was in the peak, and probably also that much more dirtier and corrupt and sleazier and stinkier, all of the ladies have Mexican sounding names, and one of the true crown jewels on this little planet we live on.

I went to Penthouse maybe about 6 months ago while barhopping with an NLBT lady and didn't get ripped off, but didn't find anything I liked either.

I have been to the Penthouse, once, and that will not happen again.

Jesus man, even at regular price, $15 for two drinks, in Nuevo Laredo, is highway robbery. A tourist trap, now confirmed.
LOL yea it is. Shouldve stayed in Downtown. When you go to some of these businesses, you always have to have your guards up and be careful. This way I think you can't have much fun and enjoyment.

I was down there on Friday nite. Met BBond and couple others at Club Intimo and I left after an hr or so. Headed down to Montera around 9ish. It was packed but had couple really good looking ones but were taken. Had couple beers there and moved on to Club Horseshoe. Met 3 different girls that was supplied by a waiter who works there. But none of them were interesting. BBond walked in and asked him about Penthouse, said it was good but area was not very good but I took a a chance and got a cab. Penthouse was really interesting. Something like Danash in NLBT. Regular and Chica Drinks were very pricey, didn't order many as I had few in Downtown. Had a girl there (kinda forgot her name. LOL). All in all I loved Penthouse. As far as going back, I am not sure when will that be as I didn't find that situation very safe. Receptionist in my hotel told me not to go out at nite because of violance and etc.

    Thanks for the update

Thanks for the info. The bars that you all frequent are close enought to the border just in case someone needs to make a run for it, LOL.

I know several people that take truckers, by van, into NLBT, I know several others that act as "guides" to tourists. The "guides" tell me that the police at the gate can and will fuck with you. The "van guys" tell me that you can't tell the cops anything. The "van guys" have a pass from a certain bar owner and are not even slowed when entering. Obviously several bar owners in NLBT are aware the cops are killing the place but are either unable or unwilling to do anything about it. If you drive, if the cops at the entrance don't get you, transito will when you leave. I do know locals that visit the zona, mainly just to drink after hours, they are not fucked with, the policia know they can't and won't gain anything for dong so. Gringo=$$, so that's their target.
Will you be hassled and or robbed by the bastards? Some nights, no, other nights, probably.
When the local "guides" recommend against going there, weigh all that everyone else says, I will not go or recommend anyone else to go.
Then there is the locality issue, that area is almost always a hot zone when shit hits the fan here.
I have more specific reasons, which, unfortunately, must remain unsaid.

The Montera seems to be now on the same keel as the other bars, I frequently visit there. I can't go into specifics, but can say I feel safe in there as anywhere.
