Strong possibility of going down to Reynosa this weekend

Good percentage I found a mongering buddy to hitch on. Will see how this weekend goes. Fingers crossed. Kevlar padded.

    Reynosa

I concur that the Hotel San Carlos was a nice place to stay. You can walk to it from the bridge and the pedestrian area has food and shopping about a block or so away. Cab rides to BT were only 4 or 5 bucks.

When the weather gets cooler I will give Reynosa BT another try. Because I can't do it in this heat.

Shoot. I wrote a fairly lengthy post and that seems to have vanished, so I apologize if this post is redundant.

It's interesting that no one looks critically at those reports of violence. Those two streets do not intersect; in fact, they are in fairly different parts of town and while there may be some duplicate street names in Reynosa I cannot find anything that makes sense.

None of my maps show a Santa Fe neighborhood but Aldama runs fairly close to BT and through the Centro area while Tamaliupas is further south, across from Rt. 40 and roughly parallel to Rt. 2. So that would be over near one of my favorite seafood places (El Pulpo) and pretty close to the Applebee's on that side of town.

As far as lodging goes there is a nice hotel downtown called the Hotel San Carlos. It's across the street from the downtown Centro town square, the Plaza Principal. You can safely walk around the park pretty much all night long. There is a French restaurant for breakfast, a perfectly fine and clean businessman's bar called the Mission Bar, several nearby restaurants (the family that owns the Mission Bar also owns the nearby Penguino restaurant and taco places and food can be delivered to the bar).

If you want more of a food selection look for the street that is blocked off for pedestrians only. Plenty of food down there including 2 Chinese restaurants if that's your thing.

Definitely get a cab between BT and the downtown part of the Centro. Cabs are dirt cheap. It's a short ride but a little to far to walk for most of us.

Reynosa has some nice areas, they just aren't close to BT. But the downtown part of the Centro is a great place to eat and drink, but it's an entirely different atmosphere from BT.

I think it's interesting that no one looks at some of these stories of violence critically, because those two streets do not intersect. And I am not sure where the Santa Fe section of Reynosa would be but Aldama would generally be considered to be the Centro; Tamaulipas is on the other side of Rt. 40 and runs roughly parallel to Rt. 2. In other words, Tamaulipas is in a different part of town and near one of my favorite seafood restaurants (El Pulpo) and not too far from the Applebee's that is on that end of town.

As far as hotels go there is a nice hotel (Hotel San Carlos) in the Centro along with several respectable bars (look for the Mission Bar) , a French restaurant for breakfast, and so forth. Get a cab between BT and the Centro (anchored by the Park Principal if I recall the name correctly). You can walk around the park safely at night along with the walking mall.

Reynosa has some nice areas but most aren't close to BT. The Centro / Park area attracts families and businessmen. The Mayor's office is a couple of doors down from the Mission Bar. So be respectful is all that I can tell why'all. It's a different atmosphere from Boy's Town.

The same family that owns the Mission Bar owns the three Penguino restaurants nearby. You can have their food delivered to the bar. The tacos are not the cheapest in town but they are excellent. Beer and drink prices are very, very reasonable at the Mission Bar compared to what you are going to find at many of the places that gringo tourists go to.

That's cool. If I materialize that weekend, or any weekend, still not sure when that'll be, I'll likely be the token white guy with a Gatorade bottle in one hand, can't miss that.

Firefights in REX, not far from BT

Mexican military puts Reynosa death toll at 4 gunmen.

    August 14, 2012 10:17 PM.

    The Monitor.

Four gunmen make up the official death toll after a series of firefights and road blocks Tuesday afternoon in Reynosa.

The firefight took place in the Santa Fe neighborhood when a military convoy was traveling near the intersection of Tamaulipas and Aldama avenues, according to a news release from the Mexican military.

The soldiers came under fire by an unknown number of gunmen, forcing them to return fire, killing four currently unidentified gunmen, according to the release.

As a result of the firefight, gunmen set up a series of road blocks throughout the city that were later removed by authorities, according to the release.

The military reported seizing four rifles, one pistol, one vehicle and ammunition.

We need someone here to post a review of Hotel La Villita.

I'm still hoping to get a review on Hotel La Villita. I posted a photo of this hotel on 6/15/11 post #479.

Nice to know. I haven't been in BT for a couple of months, since I got myself a new car that I don't feel safe driving over there. Maybe I will in a couple of years but not for now. But every time I've been there I have asked the ladies (and even some of the guys who work there) about any safety issues, of course, they say there's nothing to worry about INSIDE the compound. Still I'll take that with a ton of salt. Just watch your back, guys.

    Reynosa BT

It appears as though the Reynosa BT criminal activity has gone down a bit. Had some friends go over several weekends this past month and everything seems to have calmed down. Looks like it is making a come back. Great to hear!

    Reynosa

    Reynosa.

Based on the reports that I have been reading. I am thinking of making a visit to Reynosa BT sometime in August. I will be driving from Houston and most likely arrive on a Friday eve and return on Sunday.

    Woodway.

    PS Thanks for the reports.
