DeLatina, Yes Blackmagic Spa is open. The restaurants with bars are opened, but can only serve to 10 pm. You can look up Blackmagic on Facebook. They have their hours posted. Yes traveling into Mexico is considered essential, but you can still go over. Be warned the driving lines to enter back into the USA are very long. If you have Sentri, no problems. Just stop at a pharmacy, buy some cheap meds, and when asked your purpose of traveling into Mexico, tell them you needed to purchase medicine for your medical conditions. Make sure you bring your mask with you as well. Hopefully this answers some of your questions.

Northern and southern borders are closed. Essential travel only. Need to provide proof if you need to go. Mongering is not a valid excuse LOL.

Appreciate the info. I actually have no intention of going until late September at the earliest, which has nothing to do with COVID. It needs to be late September or early October before the heat in Mexicali is even semi-tolerable.

El Centro Regional Medical Center during COVID-19.

    By Laura Gottesdiener.

MEXICALI, Mexico / EL CENTRO, Calif. , (Reuters) - Coronavirus cases are surging in a scorching hot desert region straddling south California and a city near Mexico's Tijuana, leading to saturated hospitals, a cross-border overspill of patients and airlifts from rural USA Clinics.

Mexicali, capital of the Mexican state of Baja California, has the third-highest number of confirmed COVID cases in Mexico, with its main hospitals at four-fifths capacity, state health department data shows.

Only a few miles beyond the border fence, Imperial County, California, is coping with the most COVID hospitalizations per capita in the state. Well over twice the rate of the next highest county.

For the past two weeks, Imperial County's largest hospital has used helicopters to fly some patients to other clinics, including those over 100 miles (160 km) away in San Diego and Palm Springs, because its intensive care unit is full.

"We continue to be in a surge with all our hospital beds being full," Judy Cruz, emergency room director for El Centro Regional Medical Center, told Reuters on Friday.

Part of the wave of patients are USA Citizens who live in Mexico and cross to seek care, Cruz said.

At least 57 patients have arrived in ambulances that picked them up at the Calexico port of entry in the last two weeks, some unconscious by the time they reached El Centro, she added.

Many other cases are among the county's residents.

Like other heavily trafficked California border regions. Where thousands of trucks and essential workers cross back and forth every day. Imperial Valley's infections are surging, with the number of confirmed COVID cases tripling throughout the month of May.

Over the past two weeks the county has registered 406 cases per every 100,000 residents more than five times the state average.

    "SATURATED".

Mexicali Fire Department Chief Ruben Osuna said his paramedics sometimes have to wait hours to deliver suspected COVID patients to hospitals because emergency rooms are saturated.

Some never make it, he added, saying three to four suspected COVID patients die in their homes in the city every day.

Emergency room doctor Ruben de la Torre, who works in both Mexicali General Hospital and IMSS Regional Hospital No. 30 the city's two largest COVID facilities said widespread outbreaks among medical workers left both hospitals dangerously short staffed.

The Mexican government says health workers make up at least a fifth of coronavirus cases nationwide.

If Mexicali's infection rate fails to level off soon "people are going to die right outside the hospital," de la Torre said.

IMSS and Baja California Health Department officials did not immediately respond to questions about staffing or infection among healthcare workers.

In Imperial County, Cruz said her hospital was unlikely to empty out anytime soon.

"Once they reopen things, I am concerned we will have another surge," she said.

Two California border hospitals hit by surge in COVID-19 cases from Mexico.

    ReutersMay 19,2020, 3:13 PM PDT.

    By Steve Gorman.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The only two hospitals in Southern California's rural Imperial County were forced to close their doors to new coronavirus patients on Tuesday, after admitting scores believed stricken with the virus from Mexico's nearby border town of Mexicali, officials said.

The patients were USA Citizens believed to live in Mexicali, capital of the Mexican state of Baja California, and had been turned away from hospitals overrun with coronavirus cases there, said Dr. Adolphe Edward, chief executive officer of the El Centro Regional Medical Center.

Edward said his 161-bed hospital in El Centro, the main city in Imperial County about 100 miles east of San Diego, took in 65 COVID-19 patients on Monday night, while the 106-bed Pilgrims Memorial Hospital in nearby Brawley admitted 28.

"Our numbers just skyrocketed last night," Edward said on his hospital's Facebook page.

Edward said the emergency rooms of both hospitals have imposed a "divert" order requiring any additional COVID-19 cases be redirected to other medical facilities in the region.

Both ERs would remain open to new non-COVID-19 cases, and most coronavirus patients already admitted would remain, he said.

A spokeswoman for Pilgrims Memorial, Karina Lopez, confirmed what Edward said about her facility, adding no one at the Brawley hospital had yet been turned away.

No information was immediately available on the circumstances behind the sudden influx of patients in Imperial County, a desert area with irrigation farming.

About 80% of residents in the Imperial Valley, which straddles both sides of the USA -Mexico border, are Hispanic, with many considered bi-national. An estimated 265,000 USA Citizens and individuals with American "green cards" live in Baja, according to USA Consulate officials in Tijuana. Many are retirees.

USA Officials recently voiced concern a coronavirus outbreak in Mexico could send a wave of dual citizens over the border into the United States, putting extra strain on American hospitals.

    In Mexicali now

    Howdy all,

I crossed the border at around 6 PM today. No questions ssked. No temperature taken. I was wearing a mask. Taxis running, so no issues there. Sitting at Marche now. Trying to get someone to answer a message. I've tried the Baja Girls agency. Also Niky & Kendra as recommended. Crickets.

Hitting up telegram now but I'm not very well-versed with using it. Looks like I'm going to become pretty damn well-versed tonight!
