I've read the Mexicali thread and found it to be the best second option that is closer to Phoenix so I can drive there on Saturday afternoon, stay in Chinesca one night and get back on. Sunday. I wonder if anybody has a similar plan so we can team up (and maybe even carpool)?

On the way to Establo, a cop pulled me over. This was about 1 am. I have zero Spanish knowledge and so didn't understand what he said. He asked me to get out of the car and put my hands on the trunk. He asked me to empty my pockets on the trunk. I had ID, about 2 to 3 hundred dollars worth (mixed pesos and USD), and keys. He asked me if I drank using hand motions. I said no. He asked me many times. He made me blow into a breathalyzer. He frisked me, looked at my ID, room keys, etc. He then told me to take my stuff and let me go. He did not touch the money.

Just being respectful goes a long way in this town. What I've noticed is that the people here (at work, cabbies, restaurants, etc) are very friendly and respectful to tourists.
