Thanks for taking the time to post such a detailed TR. Were you paying roaming charges with your smartphone? I know you were very close to the border but I'm wondering if you disabled roaming on your phone and who you have your service with ie Verizon etc.

Anyone happen to know how far a USA signal extends into Mexicali?

The distance varies with time of day and temperature. I usually stay in Hotel Siesta Real on Justo Sierra and get a US Verizon signal most of the time and it is not really close to the border. When the temperature is hot and dry, a ducting effect occurs causing the signal to go further into Mexico through the "duct". There are a lot of variables and it is practically impossible to predict when and where the US signal can be used.

I use AT&T wirelesss. Whenever I go to Mexicali I do not have any issues as long as I stay close to the border. One time I spent the night at the Hotel Lucerna and when I was there I was roaming but that is a ways into Mexicali. AT&T owns the Mexican cell Company Telcel so AT&T users are able to use Telcel towers without trouble. When I was in Los Algodone on this last trip it was a bit different. I did do a little bit of roaming but not a lot. I guess AT&T and Telcel must not be present in Los Algodones. The translator application that I was talking about in the post, a program called Jibbigo, does not use data to work. It is completely self contained. The programmers that made it actually designed it to work in third world countries for releif workers where there are no cell towers. I did use other apps on my Android Smartphone that required data though and in Mexicali they worked fine without roaming.

In order for a phone to work anywhere outside the United States it has to be a GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) carrier. AT&T and T- Mobile are the two GSM carriers in the United States. Sprint is a CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) carrier so Sprint will not work outside the United States. Verizon Wireless has historically been a CDMA carrier but as of earlier this year began the process of changing to GSM. They have a vew phones now that work off of GSM and therefore can be used in Mexico. Those phones are the Droid Bionic by Motorola, DROID CHARGE by Samsung, Revolution by LG, and the ThunderBoldt by HTC (basically all of the 4G LTE phones). So if you are on Verizon and you use any of those phones it will work in Mexico. Now sometimes if you have a Sprint Phone or a Verizon Phone that is not one of those phones you can still catch an American tower on the north side of the border as long as you keep close to the border. I have friends with a Verizon phone that is not any of those that have successfully used it in Mexicali. I was with them though and they never ventured more than 2 blocks in from the border. As you can probably tell, cellular phone communication is an obsession of mine. LOL. If you have further questions you may fee free to ask me.

AT&T does NOT own Telcel, América Móvil (Carlos Slim) does. Carlos Slim, depending on where you read, is one of the two richest men in the world.

Until very recently I used AT&T, but whenever I went on roaming to Telcel my bills skyrocketed.

I was in Mexicali last night and had a very bad experience at El Establo. After spending thousands of dollars as a regular customer over the past 10 years at El Establo, they have probably lost me as a customer. I was in Mexicali last night and got to El Establo at about 2 AM. I chatted with a few of the regular gals and picked Rachel, a fairly new gal there. It was the worst experience of my life. I booked her for an hour and when we started to do our thing she fell aspleep. I kept waking her up and tried to get things going again but she kept falling asleep. I put my clothes on and left the room and asked to speak to the manager. I speak Spanish very very well so there was no language barrier at all. I waited for about 45 minutes while the manager kept ignoring me. Finally he talked to me and I explained the situation and demanded a refund of my money. He looked at his watch and told me that my hour has just run out and refused to return my money or give me another provider. El Establo is different than the other places where you negotiate the services directly with the muchacha. At El Establo, they have set prices including the price of the room that you pay directly to them. They pay the girl at the end of her shift for her services. I asked to speak to Pedrito (the owner's son who is usually on premises to oversee the operations). I was told that Pedrito had gone home. I knew this to be true as he usually leaves at about 3 AM. We have known each other for years. The next time I am in Mexicali, I will have a long talk with Pedrito to tell him that his pinche manager is not treating his customers correctly. He knows how much money that I have spent there over the years and if he does not square this deal. NO MORE EL ESTABLO FOR ME.

My Droid X with Verizon works perfect in Mexicali and it is a 3G not a 4G. I have been using Verizon cell phones in Mexicali for over 10 years with no problem. AT&T does not own Telcel. It is owned by Carlos Slim, a Mexican who is the richest man in the world. Telcel has mutual operating agreements with all of the American cell phone companies to roam on their cells in Mexico. And I guarantee you that Telcel is alive and well in Los Algadones. I have the Verizon plan known as Nationwide plus Mexico. I can call the US from Mexico or Mexico from the US with no long distance charges and I can roam on the Telcel system in Mexico with no roaming charges. This plan saves me at least $200 per month as I am in Mexico a lot and call the US from Mexico and Mexico from the US a lot. For my Smart Phone I have the Verizon International data plan which allows me to use my smart phone for data while roaming in Mexico. It is about $30 extra per month.

I live in San Luis Mexico and work in Somerton, AZ. I have Cleartalk and the service extends to the edge of town. My apartment is about 10 blocks from the border and I have no problems. I know people use Verizon and a few others and the service makes it to my house as well. All of this is without roaming. Not sure about Mexicali.

Granjefe and I arrived in Mexicali and I used Google Maps on my Android phone with 2nd Chance's map of all the fun spots (thanks again 2nd Chance, it is very helpful) to find the Hotel Chinesca.

It is not what you answer was, but how you answered, their job is to screen people entering the USA, asking the purpose of your visit to Mexico is very legit.

You say friends, they ask who, you stumble or say "none of your business", would make them wonder if you are telling the truth, or have something to hide.

I agree the agents, especially the newer ones, lack training and tack, but they do have quite a job, I can only imagine how many shit heads they have to deal with daily, people with fake papers, drugs, etc. Make their job easier, not for their benefit, YOURS.

I know that's how they operate but I agree that it shouldn't be their business. I get asked these same questions at the stops on the highway between Winterhaven CA and El Centro CA and I just think why is it your business CPB where I am going, why I am going there or for how long. I am a US citizen, and I don't mind proving that with an I'd. I have the right to be here or there if I want to be, regardless of what they think. Coming in from MX is another story but I also hate how they tend to operate there too. If I prove that I am a citizen and able to enter the US, what business is it of theirs what I was doing in MX? That's how I feel anyways. I know privacy and personal rights are a thing of the past, but I think the public letting the government treat us like this, is why we have lost those freedoms.

I agree the electronic translator is not perfect. If you are able to speak Spanish that is definitely superior to a translator. I honestly wish I did speak Spanish. Well, I guess you did explain now why the east side issue occurred. Thank you for explaining that. Since I do not speak Spanish I did not know the word for east and this were the same word. I guess in the future I will have to say it different into the translator like maybe saying I want the rooms on the eastERN side. Hopefully eastern is a different word than the word for this. Maybe you can educate me on that if I am not right. I know you aren't flaming me. As I said speaking Spanish is definitely superior but if that is not available then you have to settle for the next best. I guess in the future I will try to find women that speak good English. After a very disappointing evening in Los Algodones which you can read about in the Algodones forum I went to Mexicali for the next part of my adventure. My luck was a little bit better here. I still did not get all that I wanted though.

Granjefe and I arrived in Mexicali and I used Google Maps on my Android phone with 2nd Chance's map of all the fun spots (thanks again 2nd Chance, it is very helpful) to find the Hotel Chinesca. On a previous trip I had made to Mexicali with Apache I had been inside the Hotel Chinesca briefly inside of Apache's room but I had never stayed there. I must say it was a very clean place and a very good bargain for the money (250 pesos plus 50 pesos key deposit). Since I do not speak Spanish I did have some problems when I first got to the desk. I used my talking electronic translator and asked for 2 rooms (one for me and one for Granjefe) on the east side per Apache's previous recommendations on this board to avoid all the noise from the night club on the west side. The lady behind the desk for some reason could not understand even as I showed her on my Android screen the question for the two rooms. I am not sure why, it seems pretty straight forward to me. It took a while but she finally got someone that worked in the hotel that spoke English and got us taken care of. Granjefe and I paid for the rooms and we finally got our keys. Since Granjefe had gotten lucky the night before in Algodones he was quite tired and wanted to sleep in a bit. He therefore slept in and then I went out my way to explore.

I first decided I wanted to get a bite to eat as it was now about 1 pm and I had not even had breakfast. I used 2nd Chance's map and walked to the Chinese Restaurant that he had put on the map and had a very good meal. Not speaking a word of Spanish I used the talking translator for the entire visit asking for a table for one, ordering the meal (the translator even knew who to order Kung Pao Chicken) and even asking for a to go box for the unfinished food. They are very handy. The Golden China Restaurant I must say is a very good restaurant. They served me a HUGE plate of food and the entire bill was only $112 pesos including the drink. I highly recommend that restaurant if you like Chinese food. 2nd Chance must like it too since he put it on his map. After I was done eating I walked south to check out the quadrangle strip club area. It was fairly early still so all four clubs were closed. I was expecting that but at least I had an idea of what to expect as far as finding them for later.

I then returned to the area of my hotel and walked around the zona. There were not many girls in the Zona. There were like 2 in the Hotel Nuevo Pacifico and 2 in the Hotel Kennedy and another one in some hotel that is not on 2nd Chance's map that I can not remember the name of. Only one of the girls I saw in the hotels were really ones I would have considered to do. I decided to hold off though. I was approached by a street girl that was trying to solicit me. Even though the girl was pretty good looking I opted not to because I had read Apache's previous post about how he got in trouble with the policia for picking up a street girl and all the garbage he had to go through paying the bribe. Apache's post had said the policia had told him it was ok to pick them up in the clubs and the hotels but not on the street so I decided I did not want to chance it. I must say that was the only street worker I saw. Last time I was there with Apache the street was FULL of street working ladies. The policia must have really cracked down on that. I saw a Tranny at the La Casona which I of course avoided with a 20 foot poll. I then went into the Playboy Club as it seemed to be open. I guess it must open earlier. It was about 3 PM by this time. Isn't technology wonderful? I can go to a country where I do not speak the language and still communicate with people. I took a small cat nap at this point. I looked next door and Granjefe's lights had seemed to be off so I guess he was still sleeping. It was about 4:30 PM at this point. After my phone was charged up again I went on another mission. This time I wanted to check out the strip clubs.

The first club I decided to check out was La Casona. I used 2nd Chance's map and walked there. It was not that great. I did not spend much time there. The girls were not that great looking. One girl walked up to me and in English offerred to give me a private dance for $20. That is nothing special, almost every club in Phoenix will give you a private dance for $20. I declined. La Casona seemed to operate pretty much like a standard American club. It was nothing special and the girls were not that great. I spent maybe a half hour in the place and left. I then left to go to the quadrangle area of clubs using 2nd Chance's map (Kaoz, La Mosca, Porky's and Miau Miau's).

I got down there and I first went to club Kaoz. I had read many reports about Kaoz on this board in the past and about how it is about the most raunchiest club in the city so I just had to see it. It had barely openned when I first got there so the girls were not dancing yet. A waitor named Hector who spoke perfect English took care of me and got me my drink. After we were done with Miau Miau's Granjefe and I went back to the Zona. Ganjefe wanted to check out Playboy's so I tagged along. When I returned there they actually had good looking ladies. Earlier in the day it was a cattle lot but now at about 10 or 11 pm or so it had some hotties. My funds were down so the only thing I did this time was to buy a lady a couple of drinks and get some dancing from her. Granjefe had a flaca that he was buying some drinks for. It was a pretty good time. There was one girl that was on the stage that had the number 69 on her shorts as she was dancing that I was extremely attracted to but I did not have the money to pursue it. I may sometime return to try to find her. After we were done with Playboy's Granjefe and I walked down the zona to see what was happening. We did go into El Gato Negro a place that I had actually met a really good chica named Karina in the past that I have posted about before. Granjefe wanted to check El Gato Negro out. We maybe spent 2 minutes there because it was so freakin loud we could not handle it. I saw no sign of Pedro there so it must have been his night off.

We then called it a night and the next day we went through the border with no issue. The Sunday line was very short. All in all my trip to Mexicali was a good time. Right now I am contemplating only going here since Algodones was such a let down as you can see from my Algodones post.

Dude you wasted your money badly on the putas. But you did eat at what I consider the best Chinese restaurante in Mexicali. You need to go to Bar El Establo for the best putas and a good time. The bar does not get started real good until around 9:00 PM. The best time is after 11:00. The bar has a courtyard and a motel. You can drink after the bar closes until 6:00 in the morning there. You can drink with the putas and rent a room and fuck them until 6:00 in the morning. Also try Bar San Diego.
