Nogales

I've never experienced the police swarming a bar in Nogales but I have seen it happen twice this year in nearby Agua Prieta.Four or five police came in with large guns visible,patted some people down then left.They didn't bother me,the only gringo in the bar,not sure what their motive was.Never seen this happen in Nogales where the clubs are far more"upscale", but I can believe it happens.I've always felt safe in Nogales but I make a point of minding my own business,limiting alcohol consumption.

One thing about the internet is that anyone with a keyboard can type anything they want on any subject. I for one find it suspicous that this board or any of the others that track Nogie have ever mentioned anything as you have described. And I am sure that if any hobbyists here would have lived an experience similar to your description would have made it a point to expose it. You have only been posting here for a short period, made 9 posts and all of them are centered around your advice to tip the waiters and doormen for protection, hire bodyguards, and the like. When you were shaken down as I am assuming you were, did you post your experience here or on some other site?

But I will give you the benefit of the doubt and ask you to educate us here. Perhaps there is something here on the net that describes such behavior by the locals and evidently (the police or army?). A news site, a posting or postings by others, or some other description perhaps...

Went to Nogales today early evening, 6:30-7:00. Stopped in Placer's first, place was pretty dead.I stupidly agreed to a private dance with 22yo girl after she curled up in my lap.Smoking young body.$22/2 songs, full nudity. But it was not even close to 2 songs. Plus she disfigured her perfect body by adding fake boobs, it was like fondling a mannequin.And she had a personality to match her wooden tits.She wanted $50 for a friggin BJ, don't think so.
Then took $5 cab to La Conga.Four girls were there, 2 gorditas who are always sitting at the bar and 2 very hot looking young girls sitting together at a far table playing Gameboy.I felt bad refusing the company of the older fat chicks,how can they make money competing with real cuties? Cute as any girl you'll find in Placers/Lord Blacks. The 2 young ones ignored me until one of the gorditas brought one of the girls over to my table. She said her name was Paula,or Mexican equivalent and she was 20 yo.Slender build,very cute face(but too much make-up).Very affectionate,smiles alot.She's only been in Nogales 15 days, she's from Hermosillo.One kid. Her friend was even hotter looking,full pouty lips,long curly hair.So I buy the girl a drink $5,then agree to 1/2 hour,$65 session.This is the first I've seen of the remodelling of the bar.The "rooms",actually 5 by 8 closets with just enough room for a small fold out couch, are right in the bar area.I'm sure everybody in the bar heard everything.I don't think they could have found a worse "bed",very uncomfortable. But she was very sweet, nice attitude, deep kisses, covered but nice BJ, switching around different positions,moaning loudly the whole time,whispering things in my ear that I couldn't understand. I would say that La Conga is about 5 miles from the border which, depending on how much you're used to walking, may or may not be too far. I've taken cabs to and from there and I always ask before I get in if they can take me for $5.00. I've heard that other people have been charged more, but I think most drivers and riders would say $5.00 is fair. From reading the posts, I would say La Conga is the place to go but to be honest, I've never done anything there. I think it is because I go in the afternoon or early evening that there are usually only one or two girls and no one I would pay to sleep with. It sounds like the place only starts jumping later on. I'll let you know that I've struck out at the little hotels around Cherry's as well. The lady behind the glass has brought a girls, but I didn't see anyone I wanted. Anytime I've gone to Cherry's, I've always found a woman I wanted, I'm just not into the closets, but somehow those cute little chicas always seem to persuade me. :-) I sometimes stay away from there just because I know I'll be blowing my cash and my load too damn quick.

Tomarow is the wake for "Yessy" or as we would say Jessy. Actualy his name was Jose. Jessy was 26 years old, Probably the most famous "Street Hawker" if you will, in Nogales.

I have known Yessy for 8 years, he was a good guy deep down inside. He is survived by his wife and two small children. Yessy never stole or took advantage of any American that wandered the streets looking for girls. For those that new Yessy, I dont really know how he died and we wont know for a while.

Nogales Mexico will not be the same without Yessy! God bless you my dear friend.

I've been to Nogales 4-5 times over the last year or so. From what I remember, Conga was way too far to walk.

I once got handcuffed and put in the backseat of a police car for carrying a bottle with me - which was stupid on my part - and had to pay the cops $50 on the spot to let me go. Sure beats spending the night in a Mexican jail (although that would be something to tell the grandkids about).

Another time I got in an alley brawl when 3 guys tried to jump 2 of us cornered in an alley while taking a leak at about 3 am. Anyone familiar with the main road that goes to Obsessions from the border might know the alley I'm talking about, it has buildings on 2 sides and a gate closing the throughway. My suggestion is to not take a leak in there late at night. I was lucky to escape with only one kick to the head and they cleaned the blood from my head at Rios (I think). I'm just glad the sonofabitch didn't have a knife.

From reading everyone's suggestions it seems the best plan is to enjoy a few beers/cheap dances at the clubs and then get a hotel room. You'll probably end up spending a little more but it beats getting beat in one of those closets for 10 minutes until some dude tells you you're time is up.

The hotel is on the street where lipsticks is located. Right around the corner from Cherry's and directly across the street from an upstairs pool hall which (I think) is also called cherry's. In the front doors are steps leading upstairs. Dancers stay there and in the little place to the right of it. Sometimes you can find some real cuties (the same you'll find in the strip clubs) and have an hour in a room with a bed (not 10 minutes in a closet with a chair).

I've also used the street leeches to show me different little hotels in the area.They have also introduced me to girls on the street who were available.Always tipped them a few bucks. Now I try my best to avoid those guys.

I've only used the street hawkers twice, once the guy took me around to different hotels and showed me women, none of whom I wanted to have anything to do with. After the third hotel, I said, "Let's just forget about it. Here's $5.00 for you trouble." It was no big deal. What's $5.00? The guy tried, it wasn't like he was ripping me off or anything. It's the same as when I call an escort and she shows up and doesn't look like anyone I would want to fuck even for free. I'll slide them a $20 for gas. No hard feelings, see ya later.
Incidentally, the other time I used a street hawker, it was at the hotel right around the corner from Cherry's. It paid off well. There is a dancer at Cherry's (She also works at another bar) who looks an awful lot like Selma Hayek. $65 for an hour and I gave him (the hawker) $10. Well worth it. I've seen a lot of dancers in and out of that hotel and the little place beside it. I started negotiating with a young and slender dancer at Cherry's and the manager (or someone who seemed in charge) said that for $100.00 she could leave for an hour and the room was included, but any charge the girl required wasn't included. I was really tempted (She was really tempting) but passed. About 15 minutes later, she left the bar, whether it was for me or for her break I don't know. But I went with her back to the little place next to the hotel around the corner ( I think it's like a dorm for dancers) bad thing was she couldn't find her key (She was really loaded) Both of us tried to pick the lock to know avail. Oh well, some days are like that. I've since gone back to the same hotel and asked the lady behind the glass on the 2nd floor, "¿Hay baillarenas aqui?" (Are there dancer's here) Everytime she has brought someone out. I've paid as little as $65 and was quoted as high as $100 for an hour ( I turned that one down, not because I didn't want to but because I was going to have to wait an hour and a half for her to get back from a club).

I was alone in the street outside a hotel. The same hotel he'd taken me to so I could check out "his" girls. It was a quiet weekday night and there wasn't anybody around at all. I tried to simply walk away several times, but he would place himself inbetween me and the direction I chose. I considered my options--1) slug him, 2) call for help, 3) give the fucker a measly $5 so he'd go away. I didn't get the sense he was after all my money. Since I didn't want to give the federales a reason to lock me up (ie, starting a fight), I gave the guy $5.

I'm 5'4", 160, pretty meek and mild really. I haven't been in a fight since I was in the 7th grade or something. Certain types can sense in me what they perceive to be weakness (in actuality it's an unwillingness to fight) and will prey on it. It happens rarely as I can usually talk my way out of misunderstandings.

That evening, I put myself in a position to be exploited by this character, and that's the only reason anything unseemly occurred. I wasn't cautious enough and followed him into questionable surroundings. I actually gave some serious consideration to punching the fucker in the mouth and then making a break for it. But $5 just didn't stack up against the possible negative outcomes from that choice (getting a knife pulled on me, or getting arrested in Mexico...). If I had the sense he wanted to take all of my money though, it would have been a different story.

Of course my sheer size tends to win arguments (6-2, 280) but I NEVER give anything to a tout because I didn't want their help in the first place. It's like if you are expected to tip if you walk into a club and don't see anything you like so you leave. Why should I tip for something I didn't get?

Nogie is pretty safe but can be a problem at certain times of the night in certain areas.

BTW - anyone who does drugs in Mexico will get just what they deserve in a mexican prison. Remember, you are guilty until proven innocent under their law.

I just wanted to add my two cents about the safety of Nogales. I believe it's as safe as any major US city, which isn't to say that there aren't dangers there. Just be smart. Don't flash big rolls of money. Be courteous, walk in well lit areas...just like you would anywhere else. Additional note: do be wary of the street hawkers who say they can get you girls, pills, whatever. I've had good luck being hooked up with "escorts", but I've also had it turn nasty when I didn't want anything a guy was offering. He seemed to think he was entitled to a tip even though I chose to pass on the woman he showed to me. I ended up having to give him $5 to avoid a fight.

Just returned to Tucson from Nogie. I went to Cherries, and after having a few beers and a few tequilas watching the stage show, I chose Leslie for a table dance. She's a petite, dark brown little thing with MASSIVE, all natural mams. Her table dance was so intimate and sexy that I decided I had to have a private dance. I had two ($22 a piece), and paid Leslie an additional $40, so it wasn't cheap. But it was great. I agree.... I have been going to Nogales for many years now and have never had a problem other than leaving car unlocked and having things stolen (happens more in my driveway in north Phx!)
and drinking a little too much and having to pay an "escort" fee to the border from a concerned oficer (beats teh H#$% out of a DUI)

I have gotten to know many of the girls in the clubs and even had a few stay with me in Phx when they visit.

Bottom line is if you go and respect the fact that you are not in your country, act respectful towards others, and use common sence you will probably never have a problem past the street hawkers that usually just want to walk with you and collect the dollar they get from the club they "took" you to....
