The streets are gritty, but nobody was threatening and most were cheerful and friendly. The food is cheap, fresh and excellent. Decent hotels can be had for under $20 USD, but hard to find online at that price. Buses and taxis are cheap and plentiful. The architecture is beautiful. The city center is twenty minutes from a nice beach. Tampico is authentic Mexico, with the same charm I experienced while living in Sonora and Baja a decade ago, except amazingly free of corrupt police.

Perhaps it was just bad timing, having arrived just a few days after Christmas, or maybe it was because of the rain and cold weather: the previously reported hotel "door girls" were nowhere to be found. Nor did I see any street walkers during more than four hours of walking and driving around the zona tolerencia. I took the Platino buses this time which are the first class line. 86 dollars round trip, the seats are like business class seats on an airplane. There are only 26 seats on the entire bus, they fully recline, have a personal TV monitor with control. A plug where you can plug in your laptop, as well as complimentary food and drinks. Also 2 bathrooms and the windows are covered with large curtains so it is very easy to sleep on these.

Estrella, Perla, and Roxana are all three located on 2 de Enero about 6 blocks east of the Plaza de la libertad. Estrellas is 2 or 3 blocks east of Breezers. A purple house on the corner. Any taxi will be able to show you to them as well as a ton of others.

What do you think would be a good budget itinerary on that side of the coast? I've never done the gulf. Fly into veracruz then work your way up north into Nuevo Laredo? If you had the choice what "off the beaten path" towns would you hit?
