    From US embassy in Mexico:

In some instances, Americans have become victims of harassment, mistreatment and extortion by Mexican law enforcement and other officials. Mexican authorities are concerned about these incidents and have cooperated in investigating such cases. However, one must have the officer's name, badge number, and patrol car number to pursue a complaint. Please note this information if you are ever involved with police or other officials. In addition, tourists should be wary of persons representing themselves as police officers or other officials. Request evidence that any such people are in fact who they claim to be.

    Principal Officer: Thomas Armbruster

Also found: Concerned U.S. citizens may contact the U.S. Embassy or any U.S. consulate to discuss precautions that they should take. Four Americans were kidnapped in separate incidents in Nuevo Laredo during the Spring and Summer of 2002.

CRIME IN BORDER CITIES: Visitors to border cities such as Tijuana , Ciudad Juarez, Nuevo Laredo, and Nogales should remain alert and be aware of their surroundings at all times. Visitors are very vulnerable when visiting the local "red light districts," particularly if they are departing alone in the early hours of the morning. Municipal and traffic police are aware of the danger and regularly check the area for persons carrying weapons or drugs and for drunk drivers. Nonetheless, Americans can still fall victim to crime in these districts. In Ciudad Juarez, there has also been a rise in automobile accidents in which municipal police extort money from U.S. citizen victims.

Just various comments I found on these US Embassy, and US consulate internet websites, pertaining to Mexico, and Nuevo Laredo.

Has anyone been to Puebla? If so, please share your experiences and recommendations. Any guidance on best approach and whether and how to take girls from clubs, clubs with rooms on the premises, or have them come to your hotel, reasonable costs etc.

    Thanks for any feedback.

Here is a question to all in this forum, which by the way, is truly awesome. I have not seen anything recently on Puebla and will be there for business in the next few months. I have little spanish and hoping for as many up-to-date details on Puebla. Especially interested in whether the Manhattan (another clubs or places that are also quality) has rooms on the premises and if there are equally hot women in the Puebla clubs, massage parlors. I want to be experimenting for the full week, so all kinds of clubs and bordellos are fair game. I am looking for young hotties rather than the older women, although sometimes.

    Any feedback is most appreciated.

I asked this question in the Central Mexico forum as well, but as it is not very active, am hoping folks will see this here.

I had the great good fortune of living within driving distance of TJ for a few months. I can't begin to express how much I miss not only Adelitas (que marvela!!) but the whole streetwalker scene there. Is there ANYPLACE in Mexico or elsewhere (short of Amsterdam or Thailand) that is anything like TJ? Juarez isn't even a dim second.

Daiblo Mactavish makes an interesting point about age discrepancies in Latin AMerican couples. I've worked in Venezuela, Mexico and Brazil and the pattern he observed is correct. Normally, men who get themselves established after years of hard work then find they are able to afford a wife and end up marrying someone much younger, because that's what's generally available. Dating patterns tend to be similar.

I found as a "foreigner" (gringo), I was sought out by younger women because they recognized I would be earning an "ex-pat" income that would, in their terms, provide a level of security they would welcome. Worked the same with casual dating and finding providers.

To add to SunDevil RN's post about providers and kids, he is dead on.

Nearly everyone I have met with ninos has mathed out to about 16 or so with their first. And interestingly enough, one or two thereafter is not at all uncommon.

I have gotten to know one woman in CJ lately, around 26 yo, and the question came up as to whether I had any kids. I told her no, which did surprise her, and after a few moments, she who already has two and is unmarried, intimated that she wants to have ANOTHER baby.

I don't think she's nuts, it is just that important to the women. Now why they would do that without the security of another income (ie husband) does leave me wondering a bit.

    Perhaps I will never understand.

As a newbie to the board, I have a question. And that is of the border towns along Texas which one would be your choice if traveling solo? particulary for safety and entertainment on a week night. I have been to Reynosa and Laredo with groups of people years back. Laredo seemed somewhat more or too commercial and Reynosa was better ,but I was curious about Piedras Negras and Del Rio. Just looking for some fun, not police hassles or stare down contests with locals which is possible anywhere I know. I guess I'm looking for the place thats most laid back. I have also heard of somewhere near Roma Texas and open to any and all suggestions and or Ideas.

    Thanks in advance

Just for the record, I am currently 35 and I have been asked out by girls under the age of 18 many, many times in the nearly 7 years I have lived in Mexico.

As Miller stated, he didn't have sex with her, he was simply dating her.

I have in general dated girls around the age of 20, some of whom have been 18.

Does it make me or anyone a "child molester" to date some one nearly (if not quite literally) half my age.

    Nope, sorry.

As Sundevil mentions, many of the providers have children, and a little math shows that they were 13, 14, or 15 when the children were conceived.

There is a definite aspect of the culture in Mexico which pushes younger girls towards older boyfriends - mostly, I suspect because a man that is 23, 24 or even 35 is usually a much better "prospect" for a young woman than someone her age.

That doesn't mean there aren't 35 year old men that are losers, but what it means that a successful 35-year-old is a better "risk" than an 18-year-old boy with no career, no income, no property etc.

It appears (to me, in general terms) that while emotional happiness and physical attraction play roles here, there is also a significant thought put in to long-term happiness and financial stability.

That's just my "racist" opinion. I have plenty of observation to back it up, but I am an outsider in this country, and my observations are filtered through my own personal experience.

There will always be someone out there who thrives on picking flies out of cow shit. Ignore them and they will go away.

If these people actually READ the posts, they would have not mis-interpreted your posts.

    AD2,

Go to google and enter this in the search field:

    +"vacation rental" +ensenada

You'll get 2,200 sites returned. It'll take some time to filter through the duds but I've found several potentials.

    Artful Dodger,

I'm not an expert at all on TJ, but I can give you some general advice.

I would suggest picking up a local TJ newspaper and looking in the "apartments for rent" section. I live in Central Mexico and I know that all the large cities and tourist areas have deals where you can rent apartments for periods of time. The rates in Central Mexico are in the 500-3000 peso area weekly depending on the place and the part of the country.

Sorry I can't give you any specific advice and none of this will probably help you on this trip, but not too many people were responding to your requests.

    Have fun

I cannot believe that a simple observation I had in Mexico would spark such controversies. If you ever have the chance, go ask the providers you are with their age and the age of their eldest child. Do the math and you will see that the typical provider had their first child around 15 to 18 years old.

They either didn't use birth control because of the high cost of condoms for a young person or the fact that they didn't want to use it. There is still the stigma of using birth control in that country due to its Catholic traditions.

In addition, these women, after learning that I don't have children and have not ever been married, asked the reasons why, as if there is something wrong with me. I am only in my 20s and culturally, in their eyes, I should already be a family man with a bunch of kids. There is definitely a cultural difference between the US and Mexico in this regards. Having children is very important in the eyes of Mexicans.

This is a pre-report of my intended visit to TJ/Ensenada during the second week of February. The reason for the posting in this order is to get some pre-information!!

I would like some SPECIFIC info on one to two week rentals in the Tiajuana/Ensenada area. I have traveled into Mexico over 25 times and now feel I must have put over $2000 in hotel charges into the pot. Isn't there some way to rent a week or two in an apartment there at a lower cost?

I requested this herein about four months ago, but since my visit is approaching quickly, time is of the essence. Can someone PLEASE steer me toward a "cheaper" way to go than the hotels in Zona Norte?
