And am now inclined to say that yes, now I think it may be a bit unsafe out there, esp when people drive around big ass trucks and other SUVs.

But what I am saying is that you kind of make it seem its like nuevo laredo or juarez or something and its just not that bad. I am pleased to report that as of Sunday August 8th, Acuna should be considered open for business!

Disclaimer: I am not a "regular" visitor of Acuna. I speak passable Spanish through my journies in Latin America (DomRep, Colombia, Panama, dare I say, Miami). The last time (before this past week) I was in Acuna was 2003 (visited maybe 5 times total between 2002-2003 only mongering once), so I remember "the good times" on the streets of the sleepy by day, party by night border town).

Having come to South Texas for business, I only had one thing in mind: which way to the border?! Having arrived on a Saturday, I took the short ride over to Del Rio and the border on Sunday. The first thing I noticed was the HUGE monstrosity that is now the border checkpoint. I remember being able to park like 50-100 yds from the border and walk right over. This time, I parked at Border Taxi, which with today's heat (110 degrees) and the push back of the parking would have meant a treacherous mile or so walk in the blazing sun. Wasn't interested. Took Border Taxi over for $20. Seemed a bit much, but, I am not familiar with the price index (I. E. I don't know what I don't know), so, I didn't try to negotiate. Seemed fair for parking and shuttle.

I first wanted to find this great restaurant I remembered that was on the main drag. Not Crosby's. It was a very nice, well lit, white tablecloth restaurant with an unassuming entrance and well-dressed wait staff. The food was out of this world. I later found out that it had closed down. What immediately surprised me was that the place was like a ghost town. Now part of this was likely due to the fact that it was Sunday (albeit 2pm), but, I still wondered if the decline of tourism due to the perceived threat from the cartels had anything to do with it.

Seeing absolutely nothing (no open businesses, no people) within eyeshot of Crosby's except for 3 cabbies, I approached one of the cabbies to ask the eternal question: "De donde las chicas? " Now, the cabbies I remember would have said something along the lines of "they'll be here shortly" or "I'll take you to the girls" or "I will go get one for you. " Today, the cabbie, Ramon, dipped his head sadly as he nodded side to side and said "the girls are no more here. " My response was, literally, "What the fuck? What do you mean? " He went on to explain that the only place to get girls was Boys Town (BT). Now, I've played this game with these fuckers before, knowing that they may get some kind of cut for bringing clients to BT. At least, that's how it works in Panama. And Colombia. He said that Jessie's, also on the strip may have girls, but it is illegal and I don't want trouble from the police-they make you give them money, its very bad (REF 1 to corrupt cops).

I further prodded Ramon about the cartel violence and the Zetas. I asked him if there was any violence with the Zetas or drugs in Acuna. He laughed and said No. He said, maybe, sometime at 3, 4 in the morning they come around to do something, but no big deal for you-only Mexican problems. I read this as: Not targeting Americans, but collateral threat of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

So, I had him take me to BT-he charged me $15. I felt that was too much, but, again, what am I going to do? We get there at about 3:30pm. No girls visible. Spoke to Juan, the bartender/waiter and asked about girls. He questioned be about what kind of body I like because he would have to wake up a girl for me. I was hesitant to have a girl woken up for me for risk of getting a bad attitude, but fuck it, I came here to smash b! Tches and chew gum and I'm all out of Bubblicious. So (and I don't think he woke them up), he came back with about 4 girls, two black-haired girls and two blondes. Ramon charged me another $15 to get from BT to downtown and then $10 to go across the border. Again I felt cheated. Oh well! My car was still there at Border Taxi, my nuts were drained and I was in the USA by 5pm, all in all, no complaints. Just needed to get something to eat!

I had decided I would return the following weekend for an overnight stay at BT (Hunter Ranch specifically). So, the following Saturday, August 7th, I returned. I arrived at about 3pm via the same method (Border Taxi) to the same spot (Crosby's) and saw pretty much the same thing (nothing but cabbies), although there was much more vehicle traffic, no businesses open and no one walking around. Now, one could either interpret this as a US soldier in Iraq might: that the absence of people signified an imminent threat to you or the persistent threat of violence, or as a level-headed thinker (by no means incinuating that our troops are not level-headed thinkers, just a different mentality in a combat zone) and understanding the affect that the loss of revenue due to the decline in tourism has had on the town.

I had a late lunch at Crosby's (garlic shrimp over rice with French fries and two Rum and Cokes) after a couple of drinks with Ramon at Corona Club (we were the only ones there); it was pretty good, but not as good as I remember the other place being. I asked one of the bartenders where the girls were and he offered to get some for me. After about 15 min he returned with an over the hill girl with too much makeup and excess padding around the middle. I declined, finished my meal and paid the tab. I had Ramon take me to BT when I was done and was ready for the night to begin! Ramon kept trying to sell me on this other hotel at the bottom of the hill (La Finca I think) for $30, but Juan told me they had rooms at BT/Hunter Ranch for $20. Didn't make much sense to get a room further away from the girls! So, that's what I did. I didn't check to see if it is removable or not. I took about an hour nap before I went out to the bar at about 8:30pm. As I exited the room, I was greeted by a guy who seemed to be a staple around the club. I won't put his name out, but, I'll call him Joe. Initial incidents of Zeta and cartel crime may have justified the exodus, but Acuna appears to be safe enough to at least begin to return to a normal life of mongering. Yes the cantina is open all hours, if you want chorizo at 3am or 8am or 4pm they will do it.

Vette I would not take my Harley Davidson Truck over to Acuna now. But some people seem to think what I am saying is BS but rest assured Acuna is not safe and has not been for a while. The one time I was about to pull the trigger they told me no rooms were available -- it was a weekend during deer hunting season though. Anyway, I think I'm going to follow in your footsteps. Did your room have good A/C? Was it otherwise OK?

Is the restaurant off to the side of Hunters and Rio still open from lunchtime onwards until late at night?

Were you there on a weekend or weekday?

But I will add just a few things to this. Oh yes, about the blood, I'm sure it was maybe a knife or someone just got the living shit beat out of them by a couple of dudes or a couple of beer bottles.

About the Zetas, this has been a rumor that they did cross and do what they did. It has almost already been disspelled, but still not 100% and I know some "top cops" that say it wasn; t true and etc etc. But then again, who really knows.

The murdered cop in acuna. Yes he was blown away with about 15 gunshots. He was supposedly protecting and in cahoots with either a Zeta who turned to the other cartel or the other way around.

Some of the bars do not close early. I think Crosby's has always closed like at 12 or 1, but corona club and all the others still stay open normal hours.

Acuna has not turned into a ghost town. The only times it has was when some shit did go down and several people were killed, but that is like everywhere else, but its normal as can be as of yesterday when I went. And there is no cerfew as you have said.

Best place for girls, for me is still downtown. I have this regular girl who used to work at Jessies Bar, her name is "Monsi" which is a nickname or shortened version of her name. When we got into Mex the first thing I saw was what alarmed me most. Across the street from the Corona Club on the sidewalk was a spot of blood on the sidewalk. It could not be covered by a paper plate, extending down hidalgo was a "fast" trail of blood with a drop or two every two or three inches. About every 10 or 15 feet there would be a spot about 5 inches in diameter. This extended down the block and into the street where the "victim" must have got in a vehicle. Our cab driver told us a local young man got in a drunken altercation with another young man outside a disco. I work in a hospital, there is NO way this was from a fistfight. So don't fight with the locals unless you want a life threating knife wound and automatic membership in the Ciudad Acuna gun and knife club.

At hunters I was greeted by the Owner and a good friend of his, a gringo who lives less than 2 hours from me and frequents Acuna monthly. I don't know if this is good or bad, but was told armed guards are now being employed at hunters (I did not see it). I was thanked over and over for my business there and was assured several times of my safety. I am sure they would have tried to meet any demand I might have had. There is now wifi and big screen TVs in some of the private rooms. They are gearing up for the FIFA cup, and the whole experience was the best I have ever had at Hunters. I was told to call ahead should I convince more of my old college buddies to head south. Was offered compd rooms and cheaper drinks should I do it.

I will return soon, but I will not attend bars on hidalgo after sunset, I will stay at hunters. I had two women while there. One was 37 and spoke 5 languages and was very intelligent and very experienced she woke up at 6 am to practice her tennis, her body definatly shows it she was every bit of a 9. The other was 22 and absolutely HISTERICAL, I could bring her here and take her on the road! I have not laughed that hard in a long long time. Cowboy, Ojinaga is comparable to Juarez or Chihuahua in terms of drug problems/killings. I know people with family there that won't visit right now. As far as the red light district goes, it's been years since I've been there, but at the time the action on top of the hill was bad. Not a bad place to drink a couple of beers and practice your Spanish, but the doable hookers were few and far between. The place to be was called Oasis, I think, and it was down a dirt road about 100 or 200 yards from the hill, going towards town. Action there was decent later in the evening. There were no 9's or 10's, but there were some attractive women.

I've been to the red light district in OJ several times during daytime and there was nothing going on. I'd advise you not to go during daytime, but I guess you already learned your lesson in Acuna.
