First to Questner, the guy seems to be more interested in hiking than backpacking. It is uncommon, but not necessarily dangerous. I feel like the tourism system is set up to discourage backpacking, especially since there is no network of "Hostels." There are individuals who still try to pull it off but it is not easy and you will have to do your research.

That said, there are several options for hiking. There are several national parks and places where you can go hiking. There is the Vinales area east of Havana, the Sierra Escambray just outside of Trinidad, the famous Sierra Maestra and the El Yunque area of Baracoa. Those are just the best known places, and I have done some hiking at some of these places myself. There are offices or individuals that will arrange transportation to and from the park from the nearest town. The good thing about hiking in Cuba is that the country is small enough for you to get a good hike followed by a shower and a clean bed at the end of the day.

This being Cuba, you cannot just show up and walk into the park to hike by yourself in these places. You may be required to pay for a park ranger to accompany you. Maybe some of the other smaller parks may allow you to go on your own, but I do no know of any. I recommend you get a guide book like Moon Books or do more research elsewhere online.

Yes, there are all sorts of women in Cuba, you will meet more than your share of black women if that is your thing. Black women are very under represented on this site, if you ask me. I'm planning to go to Cuba in September of this year.

The forums have been an excellent way of learning from members good and not so good experiences. I have looked through at least fifty pages of previous reviews and have learned a lot. I do have questions though. I would really like to hike and wander the country side and if things go in my favour meet some lovely women. Took the front seat in a smaller car, and there was a couple in the backseat who were going to Havana airport, so they paid 25each. We took off and zipped thru the auto pista, stopping once at the road side resting place. Cuba has become like fucking USA in these rest stops, nice shops, paid washroom, over priced food and a buch of Che caps. Looking at this rate, they might open a stock exchange in Havana in the future and name that capitalist pig of an institution as Che too.

I cache google maps in my Galaxy, so I could show it to the driver where to go exactly, and did that. This chica lives in Santa Fe. When you go from Havana south on Via Monumental, take the exit to Independencia which will take you to Guanabocoa, but take the road on the opp direction and it brings to Santa Fe, small neighborhood. I did not tell the chica that I am coming, so she was very surprised. She gives a big hug, and introduces me to her friend, ok looking mulatta. I ask him to drop me there so that I can check out. It is a fairly well built home, on the top floor they have a disco. There is a big Cuban and Swiss flags hanging outside. I ask the driver to come back after 2-3 hours. I get a drink and chill a bit, a black girl in her mid to late 20s with spring hair comes and introduces, and first I thought she is a jinetera, but she is the owner of the home. She lived in Europe and speaks many languages,

I will be traveling to Havana the beginning of June for 8 days, this will be my 3rd trip to the island. The first 2 times I have only stayed for 3 days then went onto another destination, this time I made Havana my sole destination. I have learned so much by reading this post that I now have a full understanding of how things work down there. The first 2 times that I went I did not get one single chica because I did not know where to meet them or how to seal the deal.
