There are a few places for rent across and south of Habana Libre. As mentioned, there are lots of cops monitoring that strip so you need to be very aware of what is going on. Cops often stand in the shadows on the corner across the street from those rentals. The downstairs bar right across the street from Habana Libre is a hustle joint, a place to avoid or be very aware of what prices are and what you have ordered / drank.

Cafeteria Sofia is another place that is heavily watched and has more than its share of hustlers and scammers. Walk by and you can be offered cocaine. I always assume it is a police trap as it will cost you over $10 k to get out. I did talk to a guy before who's travel companion / wing man paid that to get off of a pot charge.

As someone once said to me, who the hell can afford cocaine in Cuba? It is also hard to get in. That said, the safer assumption is that the coke is fake or it is a set up.

If it's the same one, you have to enter through the side door of the building (I can't find the address information now). The apt was very spacious. I got it through Airbnb (first time using it for Hav). Although a great spot, that area is too hot right now, which can make it difficult to bring guest. I checked out the massage place on a previous trip after someone on the street asked us to check it out and I left feeling the same way as you, LOL. I was going to recommend the little small restaurant next door just over the wall, but then realized you are leaving Hav. Again, good reporting and glad you had a good time.

Just to make clear for anyone not familiar with the area or considering a place / area to stay, we are talking about the Vedado area on Calle L next to Calle 23 (aka La Rampa), Habana Libre hotel was directly across the street from the apt. This street leads to the University. The corner over there is very active since there is a wifi hot spot on almost all for corners, the Copelia ice cream factory and the Yara theather. If you look hard enough you can definitely pick up some action around there. Easy 3 block walk down the hill to the main epicenter of La Rampa (Calle O), although on a hot day walking back up the ramp can be tough. Old Havana is about a 30-60 min walk if you can hack it, I do it all the time while checking out the action along the Malecon. The Miramar area clubs are in the opposite direction but would require a cab, never even considered walking in that direction, LOL.

The only problem as mentioned before is that the police are posted at that corner and have even spread out down the two blocks almost going towards the university. Otherwise, I would definitely recommend staying in that area.

The apartament I stayed was opossite havana libre hotel apartament number 410 they have massage salon at same building and you can see blue masaage sign on this building from the street.
