Just got back from boys trip to Cuba and I thought I'd mention that a great place to check out might be Don Cangrejo (located in Havana) which is an open air bar. When I went, there was a nice mix of professionals and regular folks. There is also a live music on both nights (with DJ music afterwards) I went, the bands were fantastic! Just something that happened to me not too long ago.

I was walking back from Floridita Hotel, it was around 2 am. Too early to call it a night so I was looking for an adventure. I noticed how female cops were so good looking and friendly. Simply amazing!

I explain in my broken Spanish I don't have anything and my passport is en casa particular. Etc. The Cuban guy and his friend act like they are scared. And they tell me the cop wants to take me to the station and charge with prostitution unless I give him 20 cuc! I was like what prostitution. Where? In the bar?

I didn't get laid that night so I was already pissed! I was a bit drunk and tired too so I just had enough of this shit and started yelling at the cop something like: let's go to your station and I tell your superiors how you extort money from foreigners! This is not fucking Mexico! Fuck Mexico. You not getting money from me. LOL.

Anyways, the cop lets go his two friends (I think) and still trying to talk to me in Spanish I just don't understand. He made me sit on the curb for 10 min pretending he is waiting for a police car and then let me go. The fucker realized I am not paying up shit!

Cuba was always safe for foreigners. That's part of the reason I came back to the Isla. If cops are getting corrupt, women are asking 80CUC for an hour. Forget about it!

First off good report Guy LaFleur, I won't repeat most of what you said but rather add a few of my own observations:

I stayed at the Tropicoco in January 2013, this was not my first nor will it be last at the hotel, it is a good functioning base of operations. Its Cuba, you will never find true 5 star service so don't look for it. There were no power or water issues in my room nor food issues (as always the breakfast omlette for me is the top of the mark). The only health in the issue this time was the drunk guy who defecated (yes you saw that correctly) in the elevator.

Girls plentiful on / near the beach during the day as well as the little restaurant mirazel which is on the roundabout leading down on to the beach road.

Girls also plentiful at Cabaret Guanamr, the main open air disco in Guanabo. This has become my favuorite place to find girls at night, noted that cover charge was much lower (only 3CUC each othe three nights I was there this time) than in the summer. Crowds in the club were higher comapred to last summer (100+ girls a night by midnight, perhaps a result of the lower cover charge that Cubanos could afford a little easier) and the place is really a meat market. The crowds outside Cabaret Guanamar were lower than in the summer, much lower, I'm thinking mainly due to it being "winter" in Cuba, while it was nice and warm for me coming from Canada in January to be outside at night in Guanabo must be "mucho frio" for the average Cubano. No issues bringing girls back to Hotel Tropicoco, and having security brining them up for the usual $20, I like them coming back and getting them out after a while makes it nice and neat for me (security always gave me more than ample time to have a great time with the girls) Taxi to Cabaret Guanamar to Hotel Tropicoco is 5CUC.

There were working girls STAYING within the Tropicoco as well. I realized this late in the game in the summer of 2012 but was much more aware of it this time. Usually 2 girls would take a room and try to make their money back by getting with guy (s) during the evenng and following day. Girls working this arrangement seemed to be around every day this time I was there. Do not worry if these girls seem to be with other mongers at the hotel, if you look at them you will know if they are in play or not. The advantage of going this route is that you do not have to pay security for these girls to come to your room, they already have the hotel band on their wrist and have run of the place, like any other guest. Note: These girls seemed to be a little older and not quite as hot as the girls you would find in the clubs but hey, a convienence factor of having them on property cannot be overstated.

Prices for girls in the hotel and at the club were consistant. Never paid less than 35CUC and more than 40CUC. For me this has been a consistant price for the last 3-4 trips to Cuba.

It might be worth noting that the exchange rate at Tropicoco fluctuated on a daily basis, not so much from the official rate changing as rather from each front desk employee coming up with their own rate. It was never more than $1 or $2 so I didn't mind (these people are not gettng rich working here in Cuba you know) but it was amusing in its own way. One should also be aware that the cambio on Ave Atlantica (the beach road) has also closed so now the nearest cambio for exchange (from credit cards etc) if not your hotel is now in Guanabo.

Spent a few days in Havana for the first time.

Stayed at the Tropicoco Hotel (Playas Del Este) in Dec 2013. This is a soviet era hotel built in the 1970's. I don't think its been renovated since. It's a solid 2* hotel and I paid $515 CDN all inclusive from Montreal. These are my impressions of my trip in bullet form:

- Playas Del Este is a beautiful beach that stretched for about 2 miles.

- Tropicoco hotel is run down hotel, ok mediocre food, pretty good nightly entertainment, and friendly staff and bar. OK if you don't pay too much money.

- They allow your "girlfriend" to stay there and share your room for an extra $40 night. You can only have one "girlfriend" per stay.

- You can pay the security $20 to allow your "girlfriend" to stay with you for an evening for a couple of hours. Kind of dodgy and annoying. Do not recommend this.

- The are three clubs within a $5 cab ride distance from this hotel. One to the east and two west in Guanabo. MANY MANY beautiful girls at these bars. The will run you $40 bucks. Once again, VERY Pretty Girls. I recommend getting a Casa Particular who doesn't give a shit if your bring girls home. Just ask them up front. Most of them won't mind and make sure the girls are over the age of 18.

- You can get to Havana from this hotel for to and fro for $15.

- Went to the bar Salon Rojo one night. Girls were asking 100 and I got one for 65. Great band and literally 50 BEAUTIFUL women in there with only 10 mongers. Remember guys: Supply and demand. Do not pay them too much money.
